LABOUR and Social Security Minister Fackson Shamenda has appealed to miners and Zambians not to panic over reports that Konkola Copper Mines(KCM) intends to lay off 2000 miners.

Mr Shamenda said the law was very clear on procedures to be followed before any company could lay off workers and these procedures had not been exhausted in the case of Konkola Copper Mines.
KCM had informed government about its intentions to retrench but the matter had not been concluded.

It was a requirement that employers first engage the unions on their intentions and thereafter engage the government. So far, all these processes had not been exhausted by KCM.
Mr Shamenda said to this end, no miner would be laid off at KCM.

Government had stepped in and was engaging KCM management and the unions to look at the reasons behind the proposal to retrench miners.

Mr Shamenda assured the miners and the nation that it would take care of their interests and no Zambian would unnecessarily lose employment.

He stressed that issuing statements on a matter, which had not been exhaustively concluded, would not serve anyone.

He has since banned issuance of any statements on the intention by KCM to lay off miners saying mining was a serious industry requiring only him and his deputy ministers to be informing the nation.

Labour matters, he said, were very delicate and Zambians needed to be careful in the manner in which they issued statements hinging on people’s livelihood

  1. Soveni bwangu ilyashi ili bane. But again if it has to take sacrising that number to save the majority then be it.Hope ayo ama channels mulefwaya ukuchita exhaust will bring positive results.Epashili pakuleka.

    • If 2000 were to be retrenched, it will basically bring the number of jobs PF claim to have created to zero.

if it turns out that this number of people will be retrenched, give them attractive packages that will help them engage in other productive ventures to sustain their lives.

so lets see how you resolve this one

    • THE MINERS BETTER PANIC! ITS DONT-KUBEBA TIME! TIME TO JOIN US THE JOBLESS. WELCOME TO THE CLUB. NO MONEY IN THE POCKET. YOU SHALL LEARN THE TRUE DEFINITION OF THE WORD BUFI

    • These areresults of inccreasing the factors of production, I.e minimum wage, price of fuel And THE like. Most employers are finding it challenging to employ more people .the only people employing are the deputy ministers employing maids and garden boys.

  2. Take them as deputy ministers.most of the deputy ministers you have can not even articulate them selves.

    • Ati take them in as deputy ministers…hahahahahaha… maybe its one way to address unemployment…hahahahah

    • @ndobo what do you do for a living young man ? You are always commenting.Where do you get all this time from ?

    • Am my own boss.,,an Independent head who minds his own bussines,,, not snoppying around.. about what the man next door does for a living like you.. my boy keep up with the pace!!.. you `ve got to be on real time sometimes in today`s world,, if you didnot know,,, besides in my world today its saturday, time to chill with a carlsberg while clueing in with news from home…

    • @ndobo Your own boss ? I doubt it unless that flag is lying. The few blackmen i know in that corner of Scandinavia can`t be in that category of my “own boss.” It is about time you got you sorry as.s to work don`t be too fond of that keypad, it is not good for your future. What happened to that baby sitting job of yours by the way ?

    • @sobelenge
typical of bitter zambians like you,… if you are having a hard time baby sitting, clearning toilets or working in old people`s home clearning those old people`s bums,,,its not my problem…and if you as a blackman are finding it hard to make a break through in europe not all black men are finding it as hard…
Just to make a fool like you happy,, i will tell you what i do,,,Am an Artist a product of florence academy of art.. i draw and paint from life,,, and i only go into my studio to do my work when am in the drawing mood,,, for now taking it easy waiting for payments to made to me for the potraits i did… minimum painted potrait by me is 20000kronor… pencil on paper minimum 5000kronor… and indeed am my own boss

    • Well said Ndobo. It beggars belief that sobelenge in the 21st century still has the mentality that a black man can’t be a selfmade success.I’m self made man myself and doing pretty well.I believe in myselfand i’m doing even better than some graduates and i can’t let someone like sobelooser shake me.Frankly its self destructive since what he/she believes is what they’ll become.

    • @ndobo i doubt it.I know most of the Zambians there.I have stayed with them.I doubt if you can even pull in 15,000 kroner per month.By the way i`m not bitter but dissapointed by most of you Zambians there all you do most of the time is drink and sleep with those desperate swedes without so much care in this world.I`m happy for you if you have managed that feat.I said this because you guys there are an embarrassment.

    • Yes he painted himself out of poverty which is good. These guys down there are a disappointment. Good to know that one of them is doing fine for a change and not just that issue ati ise tinkala ku Europe without anything to show for it.

    • Imwe baffikala lekeni ukutalikana, ama flag yonse aya yabufi bonse limbi nimwe ba neighbour kno ku chazanga

    • @sobelenge AKA Zebige
So imwe ba sobelenge, me i ve told you what am doing, am a simple artist educated at florence academy of art,,, i have a simple studio here sweden,, please note am not a degree holder of anything!
NB.. i have a piece of chiluba`s last supper,, in the painting there is ema mwamba, chiluba himself and some unidentified mary magdalene, some blue eucarist on the bed sheets and more….,, da vinci style! when you see that painting in future in zambia on the market,,, just know its me code name ndobo

so imwe ba sobelenge tell me about your PhDs and your good life and succes in europe.. because you sound like you are the only zambian in europe who is not dissapointment,,, i hope you are not one of those hand picked to come to europe because of political connections…

    • Come on.Don`t liken me to your fellow cadre Zebige.I rarely comment on this site but i observe you and that foolish Zebige of yours talk about things that don`t make sense here.I don`t have that phd myself but i`m a student doctor in the Uk.Don`t get emotional, i was just talking about things i saw while i was on attachment in your country. No pun intended.

    • @ndobo for the record i`m not Zebige.I`m a student doctor myself based in Uk.I said what i said because thats the lifestyle i saw when i was in Sweden for practice.Don`t take it hard bro it is only that i thought you are in that category of lazy Zedians pretending to be doing fine abroad.I wish i can see your art work.Have a blast.

    • ndobo! That is a refreshing perspective my man! I am basically tired of this stereotyping that is typical of Zambians when they try to project themselves and their experiences onto others. That is one of the reasons why hopeless religious practices are thriving in that part of the world – and that is why Zambians tend to exercise the “marketeer syndrome”; just look at how they pack a corner of the world when a few of them suddenly seem to be ‘comfortable’. My friend migrating to RSA has been told all sorts of sorry things that he has shrugged off because his station is completely different from what his ‘advisors’ went through! By the way, I would proudly buy one of your works as a pride of place! Cheers man!

    • @Sobelenge thats not cool.Leave the brother alone.Stereotyping is a serious disease@ndobo continue with that spirit man.I like how you have handled this provocation. The sky is surely the limit.Aluta continua !!!

    • Sobelenge don’t get infatuated with the sh#t from Ndobo. Most likely he smokes mbanje like most artists. You call him Young man? The man has been exposed to be 62 years old but blogs like a 13 year old. Check his grammar and spelling. And on every topic. He must be very lonely. Candidate for a shrink.

  3. Yaba 2000? A big number. How is this going to be done? I am assuming that nothing will change the minds of KCM. As for the government they cant do anything about it. KCM is a private company which is affected by the winds of change in the global economy. It is true that the price of Copper has been falling. This mainly due to lack of demand from China. In-fact some of us think China is a bubble that will explode at some point. Capitalism is a vehicle that brings wealth but they is an ugly side to it as well. The lose of jobs by honest working men. I fear that the only thing the government can do is delay the bleeding of the wound.

  4. Shameda mafi yobe, this is a foregone conclusion.weather you like it or not those jobs are gone and KCM as already made up its mind.so stop playing with the citizenry when you already know the outcome.senior managers were fired what did you do about it? What more chibombe bombe?shamenda uichindike twapapata

  5. Imwe shikulu ati bechita panic when so many might be retrenched. Whether this happens or not miners will still panic unless you assure them that their jobs are secure because the issue will be solved. It’s not easy. My heart goes out to those miners.

  6. Donot worry indeed the minister says…. you will loss you jobs now donot panic , then wait for 2016 vote PF and give president sata a second term… this time more and more jobs and money ,,, you wont need your pockets because they will be too small,, so start gathering sacks those are they ones you will use to carry your cash from PF government… thats according to the gospel of saint Sata

    • this posting is written in a language similar to english.
can someone interprete it for me.
      in english please…

  7. NOW THIS IS REALLY BUFI AND DONCHI KUBEBA!!!!!!

SATA LIED TO GET TO STATE HOUSE, THIS TIME THINGS HAVE CAUGHT UP WITH HIM. KCM IS A PRIVATE COMPANY WHAT CAN SATA DO IF THE OWNERS WANT TO RETRENCH????

2000 EMPLOY THEM AT MONGU WHITE ELEPHANT STADIUM THIS FREE LABOUR CAN COME IN HANDY.
THAT IS WHY I SAY SATA IS A FOOL. HE MOCKS AND INSULTED US IN THE DIASPORA MEANWHILE HE CANNOT CREATE JOBS FOR US AND THOSE AT HOME.

SATA CHIPUBA SANA…….. HIS PAST ADULTEROUS LIFE CATCHING UP WITH HIM AND HIS NUMEROUS LIES.

  8. This self destructive belief that you always have to work for somebody is really bad for zambia.Thats bcoz you never develop the self belief in yourself to start your own firm and make it a success. We can see this in the domination of commerce and running of big firms by foreigners allover zambia. All zambian run entities like zamtel & ZA folded bcoz we’re not a business savvy people and our work ethic sucks. Its time zambians start to believe in themselves and set up successful entities for employment and devt of zambia.

  9. Before KCM does anything stupid let first retrench all INDIANS. We have too many indians in Chingola doing nothing. Imwe ba shi mine make sure that all Indians leave Chingola before they prune you. KCM management is fake thats why they cant do anything to Chingola.
KCM should just go back to india and let ZCCM holdings take over. twanaka nabo ba mpilipili.

This also goes to Lumwana, they have to many Ausies who just drink coffee and the only qualification they have is attendance certificates, The Govt should also tell Lumwana management ( Londono) to retrench Australians before retrench any zambian, if this does not happen then will sort them out as PF

    • spot on.
do the “chambishi smelter” thing on them.( i mean the way the chinese were sorted out in chambishi).
now these indians. who do they think they are.
      this is not india. atase!

    • Make sure your eyes are not bigger than your hands. A lot of nations are making the interesting act of reversing their xenophobic-laced behaviors because no sooner do they localize their so-called ‘foreign occupied job’ than standards and productivity go down. Ask some of your neighboring countries that relied on foreign labor and then pretended they could do without them… they will tell you how quickly you learn that lesson if you care for excellence. Deal with labor matters and standards carefully.

  10. @ 10 We have too many Indians in Chingola?? That is just blatant racism on your part.Which is inexcusable. What is happening ku KCM is a negative result of capitalism and globalization these things will happen as sad as they may be. Elo also increasing the factors of production-Minimum wage in an economy were unemployment is in double figures was not a wise thing to do by the government.Such things make hiring very expensive for employers as labour costs skyrocket.

  11. You see Mr. Shamenda has cut from Indians in this issue and he is a very stupid and silly. The retrenchment was started before elections in 2011. The collective agreements both for general payroll and senior staff was very bad in 2012/13. This was for the purpose of frustrating employees to go. Mr. shamenda has not come to help the miners in these issues and he knows the complaints miners have given him. Let the govt get back the mines so that we do not have such problems. Indians do not know anything in terms work/mining. Mr. Shamenda should resign on moral grounds, he has made a lot of money from Indians in the mines who have come without proper papers.

  12. these politician they take people for granted or for a ride because we the voters we don,t have guns or means to sought them out one by one. but one one we will react its when you will stop fooling people the retrenchment or pruning of Zambians at the expense of foreigners you don,t even under. every day new Indian company is being created and replacing Zambian contractor and you politicians and you very aware of these happening because they have given you fat brown envelopes

  13. these politician they take people for granted or for a ride because we the voters we don,t have guns or means to sought them out one by one. but one day we will react its when you will stop fooling people the retrenchment or pruning of Zambians at the expense of foreigners you don,t even under. every day new Indian company is being created and replacing Zambian contractor and you politicians and you very aware of these happening because they have given you fat brown envelopes

  14. Bull !!!! Bufi +++ I do not believe what comes out a politicians mouth. Lets counter hear from Konkola Copper Mines.

  15. 2000 is just too much. That means 10000 people will be in dire straits because each zambnian worker supports a minimum of 5 dependants. Ba KCM can go to hell. We should look for another investor

  16. This man is becoming an enemy of PF and very soon Copperbelt and before he eats any more of our taxes, a Zambian People’s enemy! Surely Bwana trade unionist, is it you who can gag people not to speak against such an impending calamity? Our taxes yayamba ukukufulunganya mumatobo.

  17. By the way thats my new job title, since i sold my seat in exchange with blood money. The government Bufi is really having sleepless nights, watch this space…….

  18. Shamenda and your government , mukose! It seems you guys have been pressing all the wrong buttons since you came into power 🙁 . Do you guys even know what you are doing? Kaya mwandi……

  19. its sad,but when companies are privatly owned, they make such decisions. For my retrenchee friends get a life and start up something of your own with the little cash its the best.get advise from established institutions on entreprenurship. Govt cana only help so much the rest is yours.

  20. Can some one please check on the qualifications of those Indians who have turned the former Play park at Nchanga south hospital into a little Mumbai. They look more like charcoal burners from Kalilo than Professionals. Zambians,we should be serious and those of you who like Umuzungu wanga you will bring down the mining industry. Atase Menye, ati yes boss! OMG toilet cleaners! How many Indians are going?

  21. Mr. Musukwa could you tell the nation where KCM is going to find extra money to pay workers if the company is not to shed off some workers. It is time the minister faced the reality. KCM is not a charity company, but a company in business to make a profit. KCM can no longer keep all the workers just like the Zambian Government can no longer continue to subsidies fuel and maize. KCM is in no way to embarrass the PF Gov. but to make a profit. IF KCM surrenders the company the Gov. would not be able to run it as a result the all work force would be out of employment and the Gov. will not have any revenue from the company. The minister should look for ways to help the workers who will be laid off. The problem with the majority of us Zambians is failure to think critically, except to say I am…

  22. The problem with the majority of us Zambians is failure to think critically, except to say I am educated, I am a doctor, a degree holder etc. Who cares about your education if you can not put your qualifications to practical use. Boasting and bragging about qualifications which have never produced any result-the majority of Zambians are living in poverty, is useless to the nation. Pleasing of workers when we can not afford is dangerous to our economy and development.

    • @SEE! your postings re very positive than all these other bloggers who only insult, if we have had alot more of your type these zambian websites would have been interesting. Jonalists alike must learn to balance news not the way they re doing.

  23. It is inevitable. Did the CEO have a financial model on his laptop, with sensitivity drivers such as:
    1) Feed grade
    2) Metal price
    3) Electricity price
    4) Labour cost
    5) Reduced throughput
Built in. An astute CEO will have this and sound the alarm bells in good time.
I visited the San Christobal mine in Bolivia, and the CEO there does that every 2 days. He then puts up a display on the electronic display board by the mine’s gate.

Vedanta Resources Plc (VED)’s Zambian unit plans to cut 24 percent of its workforce after costs rose and the copper price dropped.

Konkola Copper Mines Plc will reduce the total number of employees at its operations in Africa’s biggest producer of the metal by 2,000 from 8,263, the Chingola, Zambia-based company said in an e-mailed statement.

Copper for three-month delivery has slumped 8.3 percent to $7,273 a metric ton over the past 12 months in London trading. KCM, as the company is known, said labor and electricity, its two key costs, have been “increasing constantly and substantially.”

“KCM needs to make business changes to remain economically viable,” it said. “Regrettably, this means reducing staff numbers as many…
