MMD president Nevers Mumba yesterday said that Zambia has been shunned by foreign Heads of State since President Michael Sata took over due to the fast deteriorating international image.

Featuring on Radio Phoenix’s Let The People Talk Dr Mumba said that since President Sata assumed office there had been no visit by any Head of State despite the PF leader regularly visiting other countries.

He said for the first in the country’s history the annual Zambia International Trade Fair had been shunned by the international leaders leaving a minister to officiate.

“Zambia’s international image has suffered since the PF took over government. No foreign Head of State has ever visited Zambia since President Sata took over government 20 months ago. We are being shunned,” he said.

“Despite President Sata having been to every continent and many countries none of all the Head of States he has visited have reciprocated. He has been to Japan, India, Korea, United Kingdom among other countries but none of those countries have reciprocated.”

He said the deteriorating human rights situation in the country has put off the international community.

“Because no foreign Head of State wants to take that risk of being ridiculed by our unpredictable Head of State they have shunned the Trade Fair in the end we have only ended up with a minister openning the ceremony which has never happened in the history of this country,” he said.

Mumba said President Sata’s foul language at diplomatic events was embarrassing to the Zambia people.

“Honestly he goes to Angola to sing ZANU-PF slogans, he goes to Botswana and mocks them that they are like a little village and those are the things that are hurting the country’s international image,” he said.

“Right now Zambia’s international image is at its lowest. Even his press officer every statement that comes from George Chella is insulting opposition leaders, belittling them, mudslinging that is not governance.”

  4. Expecting Tanzania, Botswana, Namibia, Angola, Uganda, Kenya, Mozambique or any of the functional constitutional states sending their heads of states to visit a sociopath is wishful thinking. We need to realize that as a country, we have a serious problem and that problem deserves a surgical operation now when many friends of Zambia are ready to help us. All things aside we ought to redeem ourselves.

    The visits we are receiving for now are from former Heads of State like Mbeki and Bush. Even these are carefully choreographed to avoid disaster.

On the other hand Zambians are living in fear and indecision again. High poverty levels and corruption and tribalism eminating from state house. Why blame the head of state. besides, Trade fair this year was headed by Mr Hemmanuel Hachipuka (HH) who is tonga with no clue on how to run ZITF. When Musonda was there, it was always a success. You know now who is a better leader.

  24. I side with the pastor on this issue because none of the leaders that the president visited has reciprocated the visits. You can tell how bad things are when even Mugabe starts distancing himself from his protege i.e. MCS. The only time our beloved leader visits his subjects is when there is an election or he is commissioning some costly project. Intelligence organs have already done a profile of MCS and I bet my last dollar that their recommendation is that their leaders should stay away from him.

  35. Foreign presidents need to speak for themselves. They are also free to communicate using their government officials. I am not aware of any such complaints. This country will continue to be oasis of peace and tranquility in a troubled world.

    • So in your opinion, foreign leaders should just one day stand up and issue a statement in the lines of ‘I cannot visit Zambia coz the president there is, how do i put this mildly, dull.’ In my humble opinion, that is not the kind of sentiment a head of state is supposed to express. Sata has also declined invitations e.g. refused to grace ZANU PF conference after Mugabe travelled to Livingstone. Sata was the only African leader to be invited to the BOAO Forum for Asia Annual Conference (6th to 8th April) which was held under the theme, Asia Seeking Development for All: Restructuring, Responsibility and Cooperation, President Sata made a presentation/key note speech on a sub session of the conference on Africa under the theme, Rise of An Continent. In June 213 Sata was invited to the 5th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD V).

Don’t these high profile invitations speak volumes about Zambia’s standing. Opposition politics is much harder than the perceived international image of Sata. Only RB would prioritise such! For Nevers (& HH), they should find relevance in the many matters that affect general voting public & not entertaining keyboard critics/bloggers most of whom don’t even vote!
