Zambeef Products has made a landmark decision to deal exclusively in Zambian beef products, and will no longer sell any imported beef.

The move was reinforced today (July 24) when the company staged the symbolic disposal of imported beef products.

“After the events of the last one month the company has taken a clear and unequivocal decision to return to its roots and deal exclusively in Zambian beef products only,” said Zambeef Board Chairman, Dr Jacob Mwanza, addressing officials from the Ministry of Health, other government departments and local authorities, the Zambia National Farmers’ Union, media and members of Zambeef staff.

The decision aims to reassure Zambian consumers of the quality of Zambeef’s beef and demonstrates a clear commitment to local livestock farmers, for whom Zambeef provides an important market.

Zambeef was formed 19 years ago and as the name implies, it was built on processing Zambian beef. In recent years, Zambeef has supplemented its local beef supply with imported beef products.

“In line with the above, and in consultation with the Ministry of Health, the company has made the decision to dispose of all imported beef products to give the Zambian public our 100 percent commitment that since June 20, 2013, and from this day forward, only Zambian beef products will be on offer in our outlets,” added the Board Chairman, Dr Jacob Mwanza.

The company thanked the Ministry of Health for their guidance and advice on this matter and assured customers that only beef products of the highest quality and of Zambian origin will be offered in its outlets.

    • From Zambeef to Zambam and then back to Zambeef…. dump the aldehyde laced offals.

      Good idea

    • let Zambeef give me the infected products so that I sell them secrectly as tumichopos in the bars and taverns of matero where I stay

    • @Chiwanangala, sounds like a good idea. Those drunken folks have stomach lining made of steel, ama aldehyde kutuna!

    • This will now make HH and other Tongas richer as kolwestans are lazy bastards, they can’t even keep chickens. They are only good at hating. Like chi nubian princess. You will hate him and God will bless him more. God bless Tongas.

    • Good move but why import faeces in the first place? Nobody eats those things in Europe and perhaps that is why they embalm them, awaiting a chance to dispose of them. Poison our people on account of animal faeces?

    • no sir, we cant move on. First, this an admission zambeef embalmed our bodies, secondly how sure are we the local beef is safe when 80% of it is bought from hyena hyena ‘s farm who it is rumoured has a lab for producing aromatic aldehydes that he injects his cattle with. Mind you HH does not fear killing zambians,he killed thousands during privatisation when him and ftj pocketed the loot.
I challenge Dr joseph kasonde to send inspectors to HH’s farm to comfirm the existence of this lab. His cows are born at 06hrs by 15hrs they are grown and ready for the market.

    • George Bush, it is not scientically possible, 06:00 hrs to 15hrs, even 3-6months is not possible even where the best growth hormones are used. Why do you guys expose your ignorance without shame or any sense of logic.?

    • @Mwana Ka Kalunda, dont tense up so much. the guy is just trying to provoke the likes of you who have sensitive skins. Can’t you read the comical and humerous nature of the comment from george bush?

    • George Bush do you really have to bring in politics or your hatred for HH here. you do not even have proof of the allegations you are throwing around. you mean your brain is so small that you cant even reason. where have you seen a living animal grow at such a rate surely. keep quiet if you dont have anything positive to contribute so that your ignorance is not shown. you should be ashamed of yourself. grow up. you just envy HH for he has made it in life.

  1. This is the best thing to do. The humble and honest approach is what works instead of being defiant and arogant.

  2. But they still need to be punished for deliberately exposing us to meat standards that are harmful to the human body. There is no way that they should get away with the rubbish they have put us through. And to imagine that I love my Chimbombo and beans. The government needs to act in the interest of the people and set Zambeef as an example so that scrupulous dealers never ever put Zambian’s health at risk ever again

    • Even going to the extent of insulting the President, PF and Mmembe. For reference see the comments on the ZWD article relating to this Zambeef saga published on 7 July 2013

  3. A plus to HH.You will now hear the GOVT saying only beef from Nothern and Luapula will be allowed in all Zambeef outlets and not from Southern for fear of enriching HH.

    • Beef from Luapula and Northern Provinces? Will this be from the Cattle State farms that are been set up at a furious pace in these provinces!

  4. Truth be told, there are not enough cattle in ZAMBIA to meet the local demand for beef. Zambeef is playing to the galary, how are they going to maintain their huge workforce and demand for beef by going 100% local….are they going to cut their workforce.

    • We forgive you MAMBALA the horse meat you guys have been eating in great Britain is affecting your knowledge of The southern and western provinces beef capacity. Kuli Ngombe kuba Tonga na Kwahaye.

    • @ MKV and NZELU, guys I am a Zambian trained agriculturist, I have worked in Zambia in that capacity for almost 10 yrs. I am here in uk just for school. Believe me zambeef does not have capacity to feed the nation, even our Zambian cattle pool is too small. Total Zambian cattle population is just about 3-4 million and 60% is in the traditional sector. As you know traditional cattle is not a reliable source of protein for zambeef coz flow is not continuous, In this sector people offload animals when they are about to send children to school or about to start farming. Please I hope you re not bemba who think all the animals are umunani, these animals are what we call parent stock, they don’t need to be slaughtered unless they become old , and are replaced by heifers.

    • Iwe they already buy beef from Zambian cattle farmers. The only thing imported was offals. So Zambia has capacity. Why expose your dullness kanshi?

  5. Bravo Government!!! Bravo Zambeef!!! This will boost the entire meat industry in the country. When the situation gets back to normal, then it will possible to engage a new strategic plan for imports and exports. Never say never!

  6. gd drills Zambeef hope u still gonna be punished to pay for ur wrongs done , govt shld have come out strong for its people and give guidance i.e more on side effect the th chemicals, outlined measure with regard to zambeef en other companies dealing with beef product and then wait for the punishment on zambeef for negligence.

  7. THIS IS NOT THE SOLUTION. IMPORTING BEEF IS NOT BAD IN AND OF ITSELF. THERE ARE MANY QUESTIONS WHICH REMAIN UNANSWERED BY ZAMBEEF. FIRST OF ALL ZAMBEEF HAS NOT YET ADMITTED THAT FORMALDEHYDE WAS FOUND IN ITS BEEF. WE NEED TO KNOW IF ZAMBEEF HAS ACKNOWLEDGED THAT FACT. SECONDLY WE NEED TO KNOW AT WHAT POINT THIS FORMALDEHYDE WAS ADDED TO THE BEEF. WHO ADDED THIS FORMALDEHYDE TO THE BEEF? WAS IT ADDED FROM SOURCE OR IT WAS ADDED BY ZAMBEEF HERE IN ZAMNBIA. AND IF IT WAS ADDED HERE IN ZAMBIA WONT IT BE THE SAME WITH THE LOCAL BEEF. WONT YOU ADD THE FORMALDEHYDE TO THE LOCAL BEEF? WHAT MEASURES IS ZAMBEEF TAKING TO ENSURE THAT NO FORMALDEHYDE WILL BE ADDED TO THE LOCAL BEEF? LASTLY WHAT LEGAL ACTION IS ZAMBEEF TAKING AGAINST THE FOREIGN COMPANY THAT SOLD THEM CONTAMINATED BEEF?

    • There was no contaminated meat it was all Politics, why are Zambians so docile, you mean you believe everything you read. It would have cost the government a lot because this is an international case and Great Britain would have been involved. Fools are congratulating the govt for what, their scheme has failed period.

  8. Zambians don’t want to tarnish the image of a privately owned business enterprise because a few people will lose jobs but they will happily tarnish the image of the country for political gain.

    • Kolwe, you just don’t have cattle! Cattle owners in Zambia are excited because they will have the market to themselves! Ngati kwanu kulibe ng’ombe ni zanu izo!

  9. What is the Guarantee that they will not add those chemicals to preserve meat due to poor sales. I wish we could all boycott their meat. Most likely the chemicals
were added locally and the trend might continue. You eat their meat products at your own risk. Stay away from their meat because you can not be sure of the safety. I for one i am not at risk because i do not eat meat products.

  10. It was hard to believe that some of the people I considered to be intelligent commentators on LT were too vulgar on this issue and they demonized our minister of health on this issue! It shouldn’t take a degree holder to reason that beef from Ireland cannot be cheaper than beef from Kalomo, unless there is something wrong with Ireland beef. How much do you think farm workers get in Ireland? What do you think is the cost of land in Ireland? add all the costs the Ireland farmer has to incur then compare that to his Zambian counterpart, and tell me if Ireland beef is actually cheaper for Zambeef to import than for them to buy from Chisamba! Total madness. Something was wrong with that beef.

    • You foolish man most citizens of these countries including Ethiopia do not eat offals this is why they are cheap or given away for free.

  11. I hope the gov’t through Ministry of Agriculture would also compliment this decision by committing to eradicating diseases in our local cattle herds that make it impossible (on health grounds) for us to consume offals as its the local farmer who is the winner her.
This is corporate poker at its best by Zambeef they know that there is a high demand for those pre-packed by products like offals, kidney etc on the local market but only a very small percentage of our local herd is healthy enough to meet this huge demand – its only a matter of time before they will announce another sourcing import partner from either Argentina or New Zealand.
In the meantime Zambeef should not use this as concession or “a get out of jail card” and should face the full force of the law.

  12. That is not the solution to the all issue. The issue is that you add Formaldehyde to your beef whether imported or local. Are you assuring us that you Zambeef has stopped adding this cancerous chemical to your beef products? Heey, GRZ, punish Zambeef so that others may learn from them. The Zambeef guys were so arrogant and insulted the government whilst knowing that their beef products had this killing chemical. Now they want to fool us after the truth is out…huh, these guys are evil. It will take a long time for people to come back to Zambeef….its a lesson that arrogance does not pay.

Peace and Prosperity to Mother Zambia.

    • Iwe shut! The so called tainted meat was identified as imported offals. kamba chabe ati kwanu kulibe ng’ombe. You people are just out to destroy the beef industry in two specific provinces that is why you want all beef trade to be tainted.

  13. You can bet the price of a live animal will now go up,and by the way how long does it take for calf to reach that size when it can be sold for the pot.?

  14. @George Bush. You are delusional and hallucinatory. You choke with incredible anger that’s beyond human standards against HH.

Your bitterness against the man is almost extraterrestrial, its not from ordinary flesh and blood. Meet the man head on, (face to face) take him right on, than find comfort in the shadows of technology which makes you a coward.

  15. There should be a court case by the ZAMBIAN PEOPLE VS ZAMBEEF to be initiated by Attoney General with Dr Katema as the witness on behalf of the many Zambian consumers who innocently bought these meats from Zambeef outlets as well as Shoprite which stocks these products countrywide as well. .Evidence is there from local Labs and Abroad of the cancerous chemical which these company had us injest in our bodies.

    • The problem here like most issues in Zambia is that the gov’t turned this saga into a political circus yet there are people’s health at risk…we need to empower and create quasi government institutions in this sector (like ZEMA) to be handling such issues independently. Our Ghanaian colleagues have The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) to handle such issues and have the consumers interests at heart.

  16. What landmark decision? If we never new about embalmed meat, Zambeef would have continued selling us contaminated meat. They are just desperately trying to save face and the company.

  17. This is good for new farmers like us, I will be supplying them pigs and cows. As long as they dont give bad prices

  18. Good. Save the company AND prosecute. How I wish we were also told about alternative preservatives. I say so bcoz even local meet has to travel long distances to markets and, being perishable, still requires preservation. I thought the meat in question was offals and not all beef? Let us think big. The hate 4 our brother and fellow Zambian HH is just too much and contrary to christianity. The more u hate the young man the more his cattle will multiply. How I wish govt could fund political parties so that he does not have to use personal money for campaigns.

    • Well said well said. if only people would think like this, this country would be a better country. and we call Zambia a christian nation, all is see and hear is hatred for one another insults that never end. lets pray for our nation so that we can have a better nation.

  19. Zambeef has to really work hard on damage control, they should be ready to spend quite a lot in order to win back the customers. the problem is they have to work on peoples subconcious minds in which this bad issue is embedded

  20. you can burn al your meat….bt we are not going to be silenced just like that…..only after you set up a testing facility and a cancer hospital with state of the art machinery

  21. Zambia needs to recognize the importance of standards. We need to form Zambia Meat standard. It not just eating something that looks like meat. Meat is meat when undergone maturation and accessed for other parameters.
Those sick animals i saw in Namwala Zambeef abattoir.

  22. It was annoying to see the Zambeef managing director eating T-bone on TV to blackmail Zambians. He is not remorsefull, he is deceiving. I want to see him eat the imported offals.

  23. All said and done.
When BP Spilled oil off the coast of the gulf of mexico the were punished. They were made to compasete pipo that were affected.
So in this case zambeef should b made to pay without fail.
