ZAWA told not to place more value on animals than humans

Share

The District Administration and the Traditional leadership in Luangwa District have cautioned the Zambia Wildlife Authority (ZAWA) Officers in the area not to value animals than human beings.

Luangwa District Commissioner, Eunie Mumba and Chief Mphuka of the Chikunda people warned ZAWA officers not to value animals than human life but to be seen protecting people from animals.

Mr. Mumba said they have observed with concern at the attitude of ZAWA officers who do not want to protect human life from animals.

He said a lot of human life has been lost through animals especially elephants and ZAWA officers seem not to take any action to protect people from these animals.

ZANIS reports that the District Commissioner said this during a meeting held in the District Administration conference room, yesterday.

He said a month rarely passes without his office receiving reports of elephants killing someone or destroying people’s fields.

The District Commissioner said the PF Government was a government of the people and it will not allow a situation where people are killed by wild animals.

He said ZAWA officers should find a way of protecting the people from these animals especially elephants which have increased in number in the area.

And Chief Mphuka said it was sad that ZAWA offices only act quickly when they hear that a person has killed an animal but when an animal kills a person they take time to act.

He said that it was sad that animals were more valued than human beings and called on them to change their work culture as this will bring them problems with the people.

Chief Mphuka said there was a lot of human/animal conflict in his chiefdom and ZAWA officers seem not to care about human life but only quick to arrest someone who has killed a wild animal.

The ZAWA officers said they were doing everything to control the animals but inadequate staff and ammunition was there biggest problem.

  1. if a hippo attacks you in the river, who is provoking who here?
or betterstill if an elephant attacks you in the park, who is provoking who here?
just crop those animals that stray in villages and cause havoc otherwise humans have their own territories as well as animals.
lets respect territories here then we will have dealt with the problem.

    • By definition, ZAWA stands for Wildlife! Why should it promote interests of humans? Humans are too selfish! Let animals live and have space to play soccer and tourism amongst themselves.

  2. Read ” Elephants have increased in number.” Started clapping with joy, Nzovu Za Bwelanso. Also KALAMPA!!!!!!!!! protect the people by educating them on the dangers of these gigantic mammals that know their strength.

    • I was equally delighted to read that and said to myself: “Now I know where to take my kids to see Elephants in their natural habitat once I’m in Zed.”
I stopped taking them to zoos years ago when I realised that caging up animals is one of the most cruel, barbaric and hypocritical human act left on this planet.

    • Greetings Nine Chale. Great News back home, seems the President is righting the ship of unequal sails called government. May Jesus Bless Zambia.

    • Greetings bro. and spot on. It’s not an easy task to sort out the dire straits but I’m confident he will eventually get it done. Something tells me that it is only when he leaves that Zambians will see what he had achieved.
Remember Mwanawasa(MHSRIP)? First they said “cabbage” and then suddenly there was a legacy when he was gone…

  3. Well said but it should be remembered that clear lines have got to be there between human and animal habitats. This is because any incroachement into the other’s territory is usually seriously taken by the other. Human life is above animal life but animals need to be protected by humans and not relegated to extinction because of man’s ignorance and foolishness otherwise we should go back to our caves. We are cutting more and more trees pushing deeper and deeper into their territories and when they try to repel us we assume we are more untitled to this planet than them. Wake people, soon we shall have no animals to cherish and all our natural and beautiful veg will be gone. Dertification is just on the door steps!!

  4. Nine Chale you do that my friend. Only place on the planet Africa were Animals are relaxed in their own habitat. Take your children so as they appreciate the wonders of Zambia’s wild life. Make those Euros work to their value of exchange as a currency :).

    • No:3 from your post & inspite of being in the USA, I presume, YOU REALLY FULFILL THE PROPHECY, THAT ONE CAN REALLY TAKE A CAVE-MAN OUT OF A CAVE, but CANNOT REMOVE THE CAVE-MAN OUT OF HIM!!!!!

  5. Animal life is more important than human life, while, atleast that’s is what my religion Buddhism teaches me.Who cares about humans anyway, they have messed up this world..global warning

  6. There’s a conflict of encroaching here; Human to animal conflict. Humans destroy trees for charcoal and cultivation. Animals require their natural habitat for food, shed and shelter. Humans hunt animals for food, trophy and sport. Animals kill humans for their own defense. And what is a poor game Ranger supposed to do in this complex equation? He will lean more on the defense of animals than humans that have 5 senses and are supposed to know physical boundaries. “Animals have a right of way!”

  7. Its the Police and the Army who look after us. The Zawa rangers look after animals’ welfare. Therefore, they are more likely to respect animals than humans because thats where their bread is buttered!

  8. Running out of ammunition? Why can’t you order enough using our copper?
I cannot believe such a lame excuse. Animals are going into the villages
to kill people and you keep on saying you have no ammunition. Why do you carry guns then?
    For scaring fellow human beings?

  9. The problem at hand is the lack of education. We need to teach the locals about conservation and how they can live with animals without conflict. The real issue is the Asian’s in Africa and the slaughtering of rhino’s, lions and elephants for the fake medicine that they believe cures cancer. Sylvia Masebo needs to look into this as this poses a huge threat to our endangered species. The black market is on the rise.

  10. ZAWA needs to look into these so called Walking with Lions Conservation safari’s. Most of them are a scam and sell lions to Canned Hunting companies. Basically they are a breeding machine to keep Trophy Hunting companies alive by supply animals. They claim to introduce these lions back in the wild but how successful have they been and how many have been released? They snatch a cub from it’s mother at just 3 weeks and start hand raising it. When the mother loses it’s cub it goes back into heat and produces another litter. They then get volunteers abroad to pay up to $3,000 to come and help take care of these cubs. Now the people involved in these Trophy Hunting safari’s have realized lion bone is worth thousand on the Asian market. So they are also now making money off of this. Wake…
