4 people have died in a road accident involving a Livingstone Mazhandu bound bus yesterday after it careered off along the great north road in Kayuni in Monze district.

The accident happened around 22:30 hours and it is believed that it was caused due to over speeding.

Southern Province Police Commissioner Charity Katanga said the bus was being driven by Joseph Kayombo 48.

She said that the bus careered off the road and overturned due to excessive speed at Mudada farms area in Kayuni.

Ms Katanga said 40 people were injured in the accident, adding the driver sustained a suspected fractured leg while 8 females and 9 males are admitted in Monze hospital.

“A motor vehicle involved is a higer Mazhandu bus registration number ALP 5118 and it has been extensively damaged,” said Katanga.

Ms Katanga noted that one male and three females died on the spot and were trapped from the time when the accident occurred up to 06:00hrs today after a crane from Zambia Sugar was sent to assist retrieve the bodies.

Ms Katanga said the bodies of the deceased are in Monze Hospital Mortuary.

    • The reporter is right. great north road is the official name. its from Livingstone up to Nakonde. It was meant to be a link from Cape town to Cairo.

  4. I have worked for a transport company before. The truth of the matter is that most of these PSV drivers on our roads are illiterates with no formal training whatsoever. They start as call boys in bus stations before graduating to min bus/taxi drivers them to PSV drivers. The government must do something about this. Secondly why does RTSA allow buses to move at night? We are not serious in this country.

  8. But also ba Mazhandu their buses nayapwa bushe are there no government inspectors to inspect public transport? Awe batata ba Sata we need inspectors to inspect ama buses before they leave on a very long trip.

  9. bros & sis in zambia..am not surprised with such reckless drivers of those buses..i once travelled with those buses and was appalled by the recklessness of those drivers..the *****s have the audacity of driving parallel to each other at an extrmely high speed! from that trip i vowed to never ever take a trip with those mazhandu buses, never!!
