THE Ministry of Health has recruited 305 registered nurses following the dismissal of a total of 594 nurses, early this month.

Ministry of Health spokesperson, Reuben Mbewe, said an additional 249 registered nurses were in the process of being recruited to cushion the impact on health provision after the dismissals.

The 594 dismissed nurses were from 11 health institutions in five provinces, namely, Eastern, Southern, Northern, Lusaka and the Copperbelt.

The nurses participated in a 10 days illegal strike to press the Government to increase their salaries.

Dr Mbewe said in a statement in Lusaka yesterday that the Ministry of Health, the Public Service Management Division, the Public Service Commission and the Ministry of Community Development, Mother and Child Health, had partnered to handle the recruitment exercise.

“305 registered nurses have been recruited and letters have since been distributed and they have started reporting. We are in the process of recruiting a further 249 registered nurses. The letters of appointment will be ready by Tuesday and should be collected from the Ministry of Health, 50 certified midwives have been recruited and posted,” Dr Mbewe said.

He appealed to those that had been appointed to report to their respective posts immediately adding that theatre nurses, who had graduated, were as well requested to report to their various stations immediately.

“With these recruitment’s all the institutions that were affected have been taken care of.

We also want to inform the nation that the recruitment of nurses and other medical staff will continue,” he said.

He said about 300 nurses had appealed to have their dismissal cases heard as such the Public Service Commission would be considering the appeals this week and feedback would be communicated by Friday this week.

“Once again we would like to make an earnest appeal to those nurses who have been recently appointed to report to their stations immediately,” he said.

The University Teaching Hospital (UTH) in Lusaka where the majority of the nurses were dismissed recently appealed to the government to employee more nurses following the dismissal of over 200 nurses.

    • I dont see much sense in this matter. all these nurses will be paid settling in allowances plus other allowances. No more strikes in Zambia or else you get fired.
Where is the sleepy ZCTU? Is because they do not have sound education and they for the unknown

    • NO. 1.1 IN WHICH GRADE DID YOU END? IN BETWEEN GRADE 5 AND GRADE 7- I AM PRETTY SURE THERE IS SOMEWHERE WHERE THEY TEACH WHAT AN ILLEGAL STRIKE IS. THE NURSES HAD GONE ON AN ILLEGAL STRIKE BECAUSE AMONGST MANY OTHER FACTS THERE WAS NO DISPUTE DECLARED BETWEEN THE EMPLOYEES AND THE EMPLOYER. MAYBE ALL THESE ARE JUST TOO COMPLICATED FOR YOU.

  1. I did not know that in zambia when you cry for your rights then it becomes a dismissible offense. Nurses wanted more money in their pockets but were fired. I know they will not forget the sculls which has been left by this pf. 2016 will come when they will be looking at those sculls and they will vote wisely.

    • so iwe all you think about is money in your pocket and not the very many people who died in hospitals because of this illegal strike. Mulekwatako amano.

    • it is sad, the only mistake you pipo made was to call other God made Human Dogs, can you work with dogs, can they clean your toilets etc. give respect to others and you will be blessed, that is a curse ask for forgiveness from God Almighty and also your strike was not legal you know the process of striking. sorry

  2. Stop yapping demons .Even if it does not make sense to u. Who says with demons wat human being do will make sense ? Bravo govt! Good lesson 2 all. Go on illegal strikes,u will b shown the way.Govt can u remove de unions fro dese ensential workers !

  3. I for one didn’t think these nurses , could obey to be fired by those leaders they despised and insulted , what has come out for them is really great shame . that is why there is a saying; that pride goes before a fall; just how humiliating this could be.

  4. Although this might be painful to the nurses who where fired, they got what they deserved! what they did was a careless disregard for human life! they even defiled there own oath of Hippocrates, this shows the state of mind of many nurses out there. that is why there busy shouting at patients instead of comforting them. its a shame really, why go into a field as heavy as this when you have no affections and a heart for people? if i where on the appeals committee, i cant consider any of these hypocrite’s fake remorse!

  5. Hi, I do think this is an excellent web site. I stumbledupon it 😉 I am going to come back yet again since i have book-marked it. Money and freedom is the best way to change, may you be rich and continue to help others.
