Kalusha-No local coach for Zambia

Football Association of Zambia president Kalusha Bwalya says there is no local coach who currently meets their yardstick to coach Zambia.

Kalusha said on ZNBC TV that it will be some years before there is an ingenious coach who has the qualities to take zambia very far.

Zambia has had three foreign coaches since Patrick Phiri was fired in 2008.

“I don’t think that, it is too simplistic for me to say that, this national team we give it to a Zambian,” Kalusha said.

“So it is a big ask for a Zambian and I do not know why we would want a Zambian to be coach because most of the other countries there are all foreigners. 90 per cent of 53 African countries have foreign coaches with the exception of Keshi and Kwesi Appiah the Ghanaian coach.

“A coach we can find, I think, there are a lot of coaches in Zambia but what is their philosophy? What can they do? What have they done? What have they won at national team level? Can we bring them at national team level?”

    • or in another words, only employ whites for the white collar jobs and the blue colour jobs like manual work for blacks

I agree whites are superior than blacks by his analogy

Can kalusha confirm if he sees coloured people more genetically superior as well than blacks?

I think I know the answer, (it is not ‘NO’)
      Thanks

    • Kalu is frank speaker… but I see Zeddy coming up quickly, he just need his own to prove that Nkana won league because Saileti.
Tana is too quiet at Nchanga, need to find himself in newspapers.

    • I have been asking the same questions, if anyone disagrees, which coach in Zambia is competing at the CAF club level?? I thought actions speak louder than words? We want results . Take our clubs to international level , then we can start these considerations .

    • The barking of this Galu is shocking for someone in position of FAZ president. If he really wanted to upgrade local football standards he would have started with the club that gave him exposure to the outside world, Mighty Mufulira Wanderers. With his influence, he could have assisted the club in many ways, not with his personal cash but simply by highlighting the importance of Mufulira Wanderers in our football history to capture interest of sponsors within and outside Zambia to maintain the club.He could also have come up with short courses/ programs to expose upcoming local coaches to European Leagues. But that won’t happen on his clock given deals he cuts with overpaid foreign coaches. The fact that he failed miserably as coach and FAZ CEO doesn’t mean there Is lack of local talent.

    • @Wu – Spot on…its rich of him to make such utterances when he cannot encourage local coaches to attain the same standards as UEFA coaches, he can easily partner with other associations, trust me English FA or any European FA would happily collaborate to work with FAZ it looks good on their books.
If he had the heart for grassroots he would used a potion of the $1million winnings from AFCON2012 to upgrade standards of coaching instead their hefty allowances and salaries he wouldn’t making silly noise…why do we tolerate such incompetency?

    • ati what is their philosophy? ma rubbish yeka yeaka chabe aya. uyu muntu nabasungu bakwe ni problem. i expected a much better answer than this from this man you call Kalu. is that the reason why he is running FAZ from south africa? because his white wife is too good for zambia? ma rubbish yeka yeka. shenzi kabisa!!!!

    • I totally disgree with Kalu.He was groomed by the same local coaches why should he now say they have no capacity.Usesless chap

    • iwe PF member i think you are shallow minded human being. Thats a genuine speaking by Kalu. Kalusha was never groomed he was talented just like any other higher rated player. Zambia needs talented player. Its a talented which only picks up in the field. The truth is Zambia doesn’t have any highly rated couches. Support your comment based on calling Kalu a useless chap?

  1. SOME ONE TELL me who the current coach is…what has he done and achieved as a coach? what credentials has beumulle has apart from being a physical trainer? patrick phiri has more credentials than this boy they are calling a coach now. instead of insulting our local coach we need to bring these coaches to acceptable international standards. by the way the team herv ranard had in 2012 any local coach would have achieved what we achieved as a nation.

    • If the choice is between Patrick and the current coach I would go for Patrick but to say the truth both are useless. By winning the nations cup Zambia set the bar very high so they need a coach who would take them to gREATER HEIGHTS not ama also ran. We dont want to be one of the teams at the nations cup finals. We want to be the winners. No local coach at present can deliver that kind of cup. Let them prove themselves at club level

  2. swallow minded fool! how can there meet the qualities if you have never given them a chance to try? if you can give a chance to physical trainer to coach why not trying them to? if so then kalu should resign too so we look for a muzungu to take over his place because he has failed too, lets learn impower our own citizens not depending on white folks to do it for us

    • How could you say something constructive when you cant even write correct english?you so pathetic.yes am black but white think super fantastic than you.truth be told.

    • @cardiologist doctor – you are a perfect example of what brainwashing is. you want to judge the capabilities of people by their proficiency in the english language. a language which is not even your own. you shun your own language sure? are you thining straight. olo ti pwanye chizungu its a ok, kaili its not my mother tongue.we are evn better that we can say a few words in this their wretched language. how many white people speak nyanja or bemba, lozi, tonga. have pride in yourself. And for the record, whites dont think better than blacks.you have to look at this whole thing again.in which language do you do your exams in school/university and in which language do you think?i know you probably have not thought of this, just contemplate and let me know.i need to free your mind brother

  3. This is a new year’s insult to the local coaches. Kalusha failed to coach the national team because he did not have the capacity. That does not mean that every other coach is as a failure as he is. I personally feel the combination of Fightone Simukonda, Peter Kaumba and Goerge Lwandamina can make the cut.

  4. This is foolishnes of the worst kind. How can you talk about what they have done when you know what they are doing. (Producing players for the so called national team) give them a chance you greed hipocryt or just resign to pave way for other soccer administrators to do the job. Fool!

    • That’s what happens when you treat people like demigods they look down on your like peasants yet you are the ones sacrificing taxpayer’s funds meant for basic schools and medicines. ..he had more respect for coaches of RSA than yourselves.

  5. he should have given reference to himself since he failed as a coach.futhermore he should outline the plans they have in place to train our coaches.its high time we started filling up all positions with our people.we can do it we have the capability and will

  6. ….this guy does not appreciate Zambians in any way at all….be it our women. To some extent , may be even our territory.
That coming out from our football chief as blunt as that…its an embarrassing statement not only to the indigenous Zambian coaches but also to an ordinary Zambia

  7. I support Kalu for this we don’t want unprofessional people lead our national team. Also someone to be choosing people from his tribe whether they are not good at play or not.

  8. He does not appreciate anything or anyone black. That is what he is – a coconut! Black outside but white in side. His current coach is luck because he has no colour. That is the only qualification

  9. Its true no Zambia coach can coach our national team.Ifwe nga twasapota ati muli bena mufulila.Zambia coaches are worth to be in match organising committees.GREAT KALU OYE LONG LIVE

  10. SHAME on Kalu and his FAZ. I did not know he and his FAZ are dull. Of the five African countries going to the World Cup, how many are coached by foreigners? Ghana and Nigeria, Africa’s greatest hopes are coached by locals. where is Kalu’s logic when they are two perfect examples of what local coaches can do. Unless the chap is now saying it was a grave mistake to make him national coach.

    • Believe me you this Kalu is not the sharpest tool in the kitchen cardboard, its only in Zambia where someone as dense as him can head an FA…anywhere else this suit would have been exposed on day one.

    • LOL… TELL the dozy chap, trying to cheat us of OPPORTUNITY ONCE AGAIN, THESE JOBS CAN GO TO SOME OF OUR UNCLES OUT THERE, RATHER THAN HAVE THEM DRINKING CHIBUKU FROM 8AM…THE AFRICAN CHAMPIONS WERE HEADED BY A LOCAL, ETHIOPIA THE UP AND COMING ARE HEADED BY A LOCAL.. TELL THIS CHAP SOMEONE

  11. I disagree with Kalu. Just because he failed as a local coach doesn’t mean we can’t ‘ve one. Is Bauleni bet2 than Chicken George, Damiano Mutale, PPhiri, and many more. Teams are doing are with a local coach. Yo Herve R was bitten in both world cup race and Chan by local coaches. if don’t believe in a local, you pack and go. You are not the author and finisher of Zambian football. Go out Kalu Go. It’s un Zambian to say that and apologise. Coaching is not complicated. You are bringing people who are learning to coach on Zambia. If you are hiring a foreign coach, bring who will add to Zambia and not somebody who Zambia will add to.

    • Coaching is very complicated. Since Mbafuchile passed away coaching standards dropped. He was the last of the great ones: i.e. Samuel Zoom Ndhlovu, Godfrey Chitalu, and the arymy general Banda fimofimo

  12. I disagree with Kalu. Just because he failed as a local coach doesn’t mean we can’t ‘ve one. Is Bauleni better than Chicken George, Damiano Mutale, PPhiri, and many more. Teams coached by locals are doing are with a local coach. Yo Herve R was bitten in both world cup race and Chan by local coaches. if u don’t believe in a local, you pack and go. You are not the author and finisher of Zambian football. Go out Kalu Go. It’s un Zambian to say that and apologise. Coaching Zambia is not complicated. You are bringing people who are learning to coach on Zambia. If you are hiring a foreign coach, bring who will add to Zambia and not somebody who Zambia will add to.

    • You know what if FAZ was paying these average foreign coaches like HR from its own coffers It wouldn’t have been a big issue but the fact this empty suit is bankrolled by the taxpayer who happen to be Zambian coaches as well he has the auducity to make such remarks makes it a big issue.Just imagine how the local coaches feel by such silly remains by this empty tin given that they pay some sort of subscription to Football House.

    • We don’t need this kind of self-disrespecting man in our country any more, its this very self-hating kind that have us on the path we are following. Just look we have a Rhodesian at the helm too, Iv always wondered why, do we not have enough competent Zambian men and women… sorry to digress, but I believe unconsciously as a society we need to heal from the over a century rule domination by Europeans..subtly it still affects some of us, hence hindering confidence and progress. If we going to bring a state or conditions of success and victory all across Zambian society, it ll be much preferable if it were Zambians initiating it, its more sustainable in the long run… that i believe is what Independence is all about, DOING FOR SELF!

  13. Ba Kalu eprogram ye Coaches you have heard your selves from the FAZ president, Now defend your selves.

    • The first local coach to respond to this utter rubbish will be discliplined by an invincible committee and banned from his club for 5 months…you honestly think this empty suit Kalu can take constructive criticism.
      Wake up!!

  14. When we tell you that FAZ is headed by visionless brainless empty suits like the Great King here we recieve a barrage of insults from the gullible “kalu” fans. I’m not surprised by his comments given that the man resides RSA and is a president of a Football Association …this is only possible in Zambia.
He talks of philosophy as if he himself has one, the man has been in charge of FAZ now for how long? We all know that he will never appoint a Zambian coach because an honest coach wouldn’t put up with the corruption at Football House and would spill the beans.

    • But you are gambling on average foreign coaches with your own tax payers money how ironic is that….wake up from your folly and sit down and think things through before you press that “post comment” button. What was in HR’s curriculum vitae before he came to Zambia? Nothing
      Wake up!!

  15. So, what are you doing about the lack of proper qualified local coaches KALU?
they wont just drop from somewhere! EMPOWER THE ZAMBIAN COACHES! TRAIN THEM FOOL!

    • Now it makes alot of sense the lack of self-worth exhibited by this man is very shocking, this is what happens when you spend too much time with white people and ignorantly assume you are one of them.
Like I always say we will NEVER go anywhere with these empty tins like Kalu!!

  16. As Zambians we all don’t believe in ourselves. Kalu is right because he doesn’t believe in himself and everyone who calls himself a Zambian. HR managed to win us 2012 AFCON because he had 100% of players in the team playing in foreign countries and their mind set was 98% Zambian until ba pakama and gained 100%. In short, Zambian coaches work against each other and putting a Zambian as coach, everyone will be looking forward for him to fail and not to succeed. We tend to critise because Patrick Phiri, Chicken George, Bruce Mwape and so many coaches never played at our favourite local teams. Lets think ladies and gents. I praise Kalu because he built 95% of the team which won the 2012 AFCON time he coached our boys.

  17. I don’t think Kalu is saying locals can’t coach but rather they have not approved themselves especially at international level. This is true when you see Zambia’s performances at inter-club level like TP Mazemba. It will be a shock to see Nkana reach the finals? As of Keshi and kwesi, these are individual who have been exposed to soccer at he highest levels. At a time Keshhad to be replaced by a foreign coach after qualifying Senegal, but he still never gave up ut went on to prove that he had the same exposure as foreign coaches. How many local coaches are currently in demand by other national teams? Kesha’s CV is there for all to see before he even coached Nigeria many countries wanted him.

  18. Brains like jay, jay’s are sick. The id i ot has not followed kalus line of thought.Let the local coaches go to international levels There are standards faz has set.Shut up!

  19. This guy so called King fimofimo is a failure, just because he failed and thinks no one can perform since he failed and more qualified, man its not about the papers only but also how u employ what u studied, chalie ku is quite becoz of u,go and give chance to more intelligent ones.

  20. That’s his personaI opinnion and there’s no need to crucify him for it. He may be right when he says the job is all about achievements but at the same time, he forgets to mention that football has a lot to do with money, opportunity, promotion and management.
Against this background, I feel our local coaches are in a disadvantaged class as compared to the foreign ones that have had all the facilities to make them excel faster in their careers at national level.

    • @ Jay Jay brother this is an interesting phrase that you appear to be using quite regularly of late. “selfsame” hmmm interesting phrase I don’t think I knew of it until you started using it. Interesting..

    • @Nine Chale which is why we need to begin the process of grooming our local coaches alongside the National team or national football. When must institutionalize our football, so that we develop ZAMBIAN COACHES ALONGSIDE ZAMBIAN FOOTBALL. FAZ and its President Bwalya-who i believe is wrong here- must bear the responsibility of using their revenue in setting up coach training schools. Its well and good lauding out how useless local coaches are and how they lack this and that, but as a leader in football I expect Bwalya to be putting forth solutions for promoting local, he can use his organisation to send local coaches abroad to learn the trade, while we build a training institute. Having local coaches in the long run will culminate in saving money spent on expatriate wages for a foreigner.

  21. I just cant believe what Kalu is saying.Even the people supporting him here are offside. No wonder he cant marry a Zambian. They are not good in bed.No wonder he doesnt live in Zambia. Its not good enough a place.Where did Renard coach and what did he win? What did Kalu win as a coach when he coached Zambia? This is just rubbish from him.He has a problem with Zambian coaches.Do you remember how he opposed Zoom on tactics at the 1988 olympics?Do you remember how he differed with Mwila on lineups and tactics after the Gabon crash? The fact of the matter is that any former Zambian international can coach Zambia. He is being untruthful in his view. How many former internationals do we have? You cant use the Uefa A licence as a yardstick as not all coaches with that qualification are good.Kalu should…

    • yEP Kalu is clearly suffering from self hatred, he has no confidence in self and hence his people. He goes on to say most local coaches have no experience at national level to show, but how can they show it when the highest authority in Zambian football has clearly demonstrated that the job of Zambian Manager or coach is out of bounds to Zambian candidates.. This from Kalusha Bwalya is an absurdity and utter folly of the highest order. I can further say this is a barometre of a broad social ill, we do not have confidence in ourselves and suffer from self-hatred…

  22. Kalu should just appoint a coach than insult us.There are so many former Zambian internationals who can coach Zambia. He is simply not being supportive to his colleagues. He is selling out his ex-Zambian internationals. He just cant work with them.GOD BLESS ZAMBIA.

  23. Following ‘Kalus’ thinking, FAZ too needs a foreign president. Mr. Kalusha, ask yourself the same questions and let us know what you achieved as from being a player (apart from your 1988 player of the year) to FAZ president! FAZ is stuck in the mad,no progressive ideas because of you. You have turned OUR association to a business entity…!my fellow lovers of the sport,we cant let it continue this way!

  24. Kalu and all u people supporting him are myopic and narrow minded. you are all bourgeoisie compradors with minds of coakroaches. It is abundantly clear that Kalu suffers from some inferiority complex. what is the idea of attaching zambian coaches to understudy foreign coaches if u believe they can’t coach the national team – is it PR gimmick?
according the gospel according to Kalu only a white muzungu coach make Zambia win medals? what a shame!

  25. ..what does Kalu think about FAZ itself..?…does he also think its high time we ushered in a ‘white president’…?
..at one time, somewhere in west Africa, a so called ‘expatriate’ was paid thousands of dollars everyMoth but only a third of that amount entered his account, the other two thirds……..disappeared in ‘thin air’…….

  26. National team coaching does not need trial and error coaches, or job on training coaches! We need someone already prepared for the job, if local coaches can’t upgrade themselves and lead a teach local teams for continental competitions then they should forget it. It’s not a question of supporting the local coaches for the sake supporting but support with results!!!

  27. Kalusha might be right, but the approach has always been backwards. if you keep hiring Zambian assistants to these “elite” coaches eventually you will have enough coaches through knowledge transfer with the same qualities.

  28. I do not think Godfrey Chitalu and Alex Chola had obtained any coaching accreditations and yet they proved to be best coaches duo for the KK eleven. Ladies and gentlemen what matters is availability of talent and that is what these two coaches were able to harness. They had an eye to select good players. Right now the talent pool is pretty much depleted in Zambia. That is my two cents.

  29. Local coaches too much corruption. You have to bribe them to be selected. It is a big no no in any kind of sport. Nibachakolwa futi.

    • How about your Great King is he squeaky clean? He promised us transparency and accountability in Faz but only the opposite has happened. He is lucky that minister for Sport is a clueless buffoon.

  30. …I think people are missing the point. First of all Kalu has not said FAZ wants a white coach. He said “there is no local coach who currently meets our yardstick to coach Zambia.” So the coach can be black and from elsewhere as they have so far looked at the Zambians locally but do not meet the yardstick to coach Zambia therefore, they have not found anyone fit for the positions in Wambia. People this is the same for any job where you have a shortage and you hire an expatriate and this happens world over. Possibly what people should ask is is there a Zambian coach outside Zambia who meets their yardstick. If not then look for the suitable foreigner..The argument he gives of because other countries have foreign coaches is a weak one, its like following blindly, what others are doing…

    • Please do put words in his mouth Kalu isn’t as intelligent as he looks… what yardstick is that? Patrice has never managed a club, he has always been HR’s assistant….what criteria did they use to pick him?

    • …I’m with you Jay Jay, the only criteria I see is because he is not Zambian but foreigner and probably ‘white’……

  31. Kalusha is right.

We have tried local coaches in SA. But we failed.

Kalusha has ably alluded to the fact that both Keshi and Kwesi have played and won national and international levels either as individuals or with their national teams. They have had that exposure.

Has our current team trainer been a national player in his own country?

    • You look at the African teams that qualified to the World Cup…how many are managed by local managers? Please don’t be misled by this uttterly uninformed daft man you call FAZ president.

  32. @jayjay
There you come with your english premire league brain washed mentality. How many english coaches are coaching in this amateurish league you so glorify day and night. Why should zambia learn from a nation that has duped everybody it has the best league in the world yet cannot win major trophies easily. If zambia has to advance in football it should never learn anything from epl with its football played for commencial reasons and not footballing reasons.
Jayjay, your useless EPL… 90% of players are foreigners, 80% of clubs are owned by foreigners, 95% of coaches are foreigners. Top scorers are always foreigners. The english national team is full of bench warmers at club level. Jayjay lecture us on another league.

    • If you like your ignorant Kalu know anything about football business administration you will be surprised to hear that that league you so despise is one of the most richest independent leagues in world. Every one uses it as a template for success. ..look at our local clubs some dont have permanent staff and no physical address. .they lack professionalism.

  33. Hahahahaha… Ba Kolwe, basekana ifipato!

All international coaches started from somewhere. You do not need an international coach to win, all you need is one who knows how to pick out skill and manage it to its full potential. However, the most important thing is having players who are skilled, disciplined, and motivated.

I do not understand why on earth someone would think your skin colour changes how you think. Has anyone asked why would Kalu want a coach from overseas? What does he gain if he finds one who is internationally known? Does he have ties with the agency sourcing the coach? Wake up people, stop being supportive of things you do not know or understand.

It is expensive not to know!

  34. So 90% of African teams have foreign coaches, except for two? But you deliberately avoided saying that both Keshi and Appiah are world cup bound, which is 100% of the black coaches available. And it could easily have been more than 100% (if your poor math can be employed) had Ethiopia and Cape Verde not tumbled at the eleventh hour. Re-shape your thesis to accommodate the percentage success of the continental coaches headed to Brazil.

    • Spot on…people are starstruck when when they meet this man as a result don’t relies he is talking utter rubbish….doesn’t he know that there are local coaches who hold UEFA coaching licences.
Kalu is so ignorant that its scary remember what he said last year about taking notice of the FIFA ranking table and how playing friendlies was not that important. ..everyone remembers whay happened in the end at AFCON 2013 in RSA as result of not practicing.

  35. to be frank , kalu is right. bloggers, u cant compare zambias standard of footbaling with nigeria or ghana for now. look at the consistency and the cups they have won. the impact they have made, we are not there yet, but there is hope. ba phiri will need a proper contender at the moment, lets out source

  36. someone help me here.Is this not the same Kalusha who failed lamentably as Zambia National Team………….. now he is using his a failure as a yard stick in Zambia. Was he groomed my a white coach to be what he is today? We won the cup not because of “white” coaching bench……….. it was just our time. Then with the same favoured white man at the top tell me what happened at the last cup final……….. be real. What you need is to give these guys space to perform.

    • There is nothing like it was just our time. If life was that deterministic what would be the use of living and working for success?

  37. kalu is being stupit if he can think like that.by the way patrice being a foreigner he is not a coach and he does not qualify. no one can cheat as at this time, we are able to watch football with different coaches across the continent .useless kalu with yo embacile coach(patrice)

  38. Try and Google the current coach’s name and Google a name of a local prominent coach and see who has more entries. The current coach is a phony man. Kalu is not be open with this matter.

  39. @jayjay
This is where we differ, my argument is not about epl riches but its football is what i despise so much. There is no good football in the epl only the likes of manu, arsenal, manc play what looks like football. Referees are so pathetic they wouldnt referee any game in zambia.

  40. I think Kalu and the whole lot of us are missing the bigger picture, in my view the crux of the matter lies in improving the soccer structures right from the lower ranks (e.g. primary schools upwards), aspiring footballers should be competitive at an early stage in life and this should be built in them, with the current standards of soccer in Zambia not even bringing Arsene Wenger, Ferguson, Anceloti, Guardiola can win the world cup for Zambia. It starts with the quality on the plate, if this is not there forget it, a coach for Barcelona does not need suffer much because there is a rich pool of players at his disposal. Local or Expatriate coach does not matter much if we have a rich pool of players who are highly competitive and psychologically ready for the top challenges period.
