OVER 69 school girls in Eastern Province have fallen pregnant this year alone.

Eastern Province Permanent Secretary Dr Chileshe Mulenga disclosed when he addressed hundreds of school pupils who carried a solidarity campaign towards ‘BRING BACK THE GIRLS’ for the over 200 girls who were abducted by Boko Haram in Nigeria in Chipata yesterday that the number of girls falling pregnant in the province was worrying.

Dr Mulenga said Government should not see such sad statistics where girls were falling pregnant in one term alone.

“I saw a very sad report which showed that more than 69 girls in the region fell pregnant this term alone. We don’t want to see those sad developments,” he said.

Dr Mulenga said the development of Zambia requires girls and boys to concentrate in education.

He said Government would like the children to concentrate on the education.

Dr Mulenga assured the people that the Zambian Government has joined the campaign to demand the release of the girls who were being held hostage by the Boko Haram group.

Speaking earlier, Young Women Christian Association (YWCA) regional coordinator Dorothy Ndhlovu appealed to the government of Nigeria to take necessary measures to ensure the immediate release and safe return of the girls to their families and communities.

“Ensure that all the girls and their families are provided with adequate psycho-social and support when rescued to help them cop with the trauma that they have suffered,”Ms Ndhlovu said.

She said what happened in Nigeria should be a wakeup call for Zambians and the Zambian Government to enhance the protection of the children.

“Cases of defilement and forced marriages continue to perpetuate against children. As we for brining back the abducted children in Nigeria. We also call for an end against child abuse in Zambia,”Ms Ndhlovu said.

    • Its their choice. Alot of women in Zambia have no ambition other than to become a wife and mother! These school girls are just following suit.

  1. it seems this problem is country wide, the ministry of education shud move in and find the root cause.

    • IS THIS A RESULT OF CONDOM PROMOTION IN SCHOOLS WHERE GIRLS FEEL THEY CAN USE THEM WITHOUT ANY PROBLEMS? WOMEN AND WOMEN GROUPS WHY ARE YOU NOT TALKING? DO WE HAVE SUFFICIENT DETERRENT MEASURES IN PLACE? DO WE FORESEE THE FOLLOWING SEQUENCE OF EVENTS HAPPENING? A POOR GIRL FROM A POOR FAMILY GETTING PREGNANT, GOES HOME AND TRIES TO ABORT OR TO THROW THE BABY AWAY OR DAMPS THE CHILD WITH POOR PARENTS WHO BARELY SURVIVE AND CANNOT AFFORD TO FEND FOR THIS BABY CHILD (AND SUPPORTED BY THE POLICY, I THINK, WHERE THE GIRL MOTHER GOES BACK TO SCHOOL AND LEAVES THE BABY WITH HER PARENTS)! THIS SCHOOL GIRL IS NOW A MOTHER AND HUMAN RIGHTS BODIES WOULD DEMAND THAT SHE PROVIDES FOR THE BASIC NEEDS OF HER BABY – TRUE? LET US PUT IN PLACE ENFORCEABLE DETERRENT MEASURES TO STOP THOSE RESPONSIBLE – SIC!

  2. Government make it a crime to have sex with young girls, These girls are young are immature, with so much aids why they keep risking themselves using no condom, that’s
The immaturity, I see why they give school girls contraceptives in the states

  3. Zambia no longer safe for young girls! We live with defilers, even some bloggers here. If I find you near my child I will personally pluck your balls before I blow your brains off with a gun. That’s a life iam willing to take. And I will not go to jail. What country pregnants a 10 year old girl?

  4. There is nothing to investigate here. The KCM chairman said it with his own mouth. ZRA should stop buying time ,otherwise your pay masters will be out of power by 2016.

  5. It makes sad reading. One wonders whether they are even above 16. If not the law is being used selectively on Kanene and others. I think the ministry of education have share of blame in this matter. I can’t imagine a grade three learning about reproduction and sex; what do u expect after two or three years – practicals.

  6. Put the Girl child down teach them the right thing the parent is not paying much attention to the Girl child these days that’s why this is happening revisit our culture and traditions western culture will never be good for Africa and Condom distribution in School what’s that
