President Michael Sata has said that he is deeply saddened at the tragic death of Zambia Air Force (ZAF) Deputy Commander Major. Gen. Muliokela Muliokela and Colonel Brian Mweene, who died in a plane crash in Lusaka West on Monday.

In his message of condolences to the Muliokela and Mweene families, President Sata expressed shock at the death of the two senior airforce officers.

“As Commander-in- Chief, it is with sadness that I have learnt of the death of Gen. Muliokela and Col. Mweene whose untimely demise is a great loss not only for our defence forces, but for the country as a whole,” President Sata stated.

“On behalf of the Government and people of the Republic of Zambia and indeed on my own behalf, I wish to express our deepest condolences to the bereaved families and the entire Zambia Air Force.”

The Head of State stated that the duo would be deeply missed by the people of Zambia.

“The late Gen. Muliokela and Col. Mweene were vibrant pilots who discharged their duties professionally and leave a legacy of great patriotism and passion for the country and its defence forces. Our brothers will be sorely missed by all who knew them for the ideals that they firmly stood for, having dedicated their lives to selfless service of the Zambian people up to the time of death,” the President stated.

“During the period of mourning, we commiserate with you and join you in spirit, prayerful reflection, and beseech the Almighty to grant the bereaved family and the entire air force his abundant mercy, solace and fortitude to bear the burden of this great loss. May the souls of our departed compatriots rest in eternal peace.”

  1. A very sad incidence. Those air force planes have now become death traps.I now wonder if it is a coincidence or they(air force) lack proper engineers with the right know how of how to service the planes. They are so many old planes out there flying without too many incidences of plane crashes.Mtsrip

    • @Saulosi, now you are blaming ZAF. The other day that young boy Eric Chimese was saying PF bought them “equipment”. I can imagine anybody selling anything to PF.
Its sad to families of the departed, and Zambia has no life-insurance system.

    • Of course PF bought the cheap useless stuff from China! Anything chinese made is pretty dangerous. I can never board a Chinese made jet or plane – that’s suicide!

    • @Nostradamus yes i blame ZAF.I don`t think they have the right ground maintenance crew.Almost half of the passenger and cargo planes flying around the globe are old ones(Some have been modified) but we rarely hear of them crashing.I believe it a problem with the maintenance crew of these aircrafts, the longest time ever not to have a crash in ZAF was seven years(1982-1989). From 1969 ZAF has lost about 29 aircrafts.Just read between the lines bro because these statistics are not encouraging.

    • Sounds childish condolence message from a president. There is nothing touchy or heartily in that Facebook message. I don’t why on earthy you should be allowing ka Chellah to be playing around on important funerals like of that of Gen. Muliokela.

    • Nostradamus, there is no such a thing as life insurance anywhere in the world. You can never insure life. What is out there is life assurance. Thanks

  2. This Facebook has taken our great leader away from us. I want to believe that even this “mourning” being reported is via Facebook. Mourning on Facebook…stop this nonsense!

    • I entirely agree with you…and it is the highest abuse and sign of disrepect by any respectable politician! It is unthinkable that Obama or Cameron (UK) would be sending condolences for dead soldiers via Face Book! It is the same as playing popular music at a funeral! We have seen Cameron and Obama on TV personally attending soldiers’ funerals – not mouring on Face Book for a Head of State ya pa Zambia
This is the problem of lack of Education – here it is both President and Chela who both are not educated enough to understand these things perspectively! In fact Chela, though young, is too illiterate and even immature for that job.
God help us although it was our fault to vote for illiterates!!

    • It’s becoming synonymous with ZAF planes crashing every 4 months. Could this be a coincidence?

Wake up before the entire ZAF is wiped out.

    • This face book nonsense from Sata has to stop. Can someone tell me how many people in Zambia have access to the internet? If am not mistaken only about 1% the Zambian population have access. Consequently when Chella continues posting important issues on “his” face book page (because lets face it Mr Sata has no idea how to log onto the internet) it reaches only a handful of people. Ubufontini bukali. And just so you know not every person who has internet access has a face book account.

  3. How could a deputy commander be involved in training other pilots,am sure zaf does not lack staffs in this field.anyway my Condolences to the families.

    • @Chikubabe…..where does this article mention of ‘training of pilots’…?…Do not read articles from other sites and respond on another site…..

Sad for the families and the nation at large….Requires forensic investigations to help minimise such hurtful accidents. In my opinion, I rule out bad weather or human error. I suspect mechanical failure. Maintenance of these planes must be a source of worry……

    • Please Oh pleeeaaaase,
What is the problem with a qualified commander flying a jet bomber? Did you ever here of General Peter Zuze of the song, Zuze Mtima Ubaba of the 1970s? Legend has it that he took one bomber and flew into the then Rhodesia and performed some acrobatics in the enemy airspace. It is only here in Zambia where such things seem out of the ordinary for you and me. At a university where I was in the US, the University President, called Vice Chancellor here was also a radio DJ and a consummate heart surgeon. In the evening on some days he could be heard churning out song after song with commentary, while on certain evenings he could be reported to be in a theater doing practical cardiology and saving lives.

    • WARLORD, YOU TRULY ARE MY LOVE! TELL THEM THAT LET MULTI-TALENTED PEOPLE ENJOY WHAT THEY ARE GOOD AT AND NOT TO BE ASHAMED OF DOING WHAT THEY ARE GOOD AT. I LIKE MUMBA KAPUMPA’S (APOLOGIES TO HIM) STYLE OF DOING THINGS – SIMPLE AND VERY PERSONAL.

  4. Saw this on Muvi TV. Very sad. I feel sometimes even if we are warned about the pics we are about to see, there’s just some stuff they should not show. I immediately thought of his family if they were watching.
Hey Sata! Kwacha is also dying. You gonna pass your condolences to it also or are you gonna get it Juice and bananas and wish it quick recovery?

  5. condolences to the nation and their families. I thought it was a presidential challenger jet at first! MYSRIP

  6. Rest in eternal peace General Muliokela and Colonel Mweene. Only The Almighty knows what transpired and why it had to be you and not any one else.

  7. Poor mantainance , poor management, poor everything. come on ZAF extend your mantinance record to ZAF 1.

  8. All these ZAF planes apart from the helicopters of march 2013 are one of the oldest planes still flying around in aviation history. Google their numbers and you’ll agree with me. The whole air force needs to be grounded until government buys new aircraft for our men in uniform. How can we even be thinking of flying an international flag courier when we fail to maintain these local simple aircraft ? IATA should come tough on Zambian aviation.

  9. With due respect to the departed, I fail to understand how small ZAF aircraft crashes always end in the death of the pilots. Don’t these ‘seasoned’ fighters never wear parachutes? Even in World War II fierce firefights, pilots almost always ejected from planes that were hit unless that hit left the pilot mortally wounded. And the weather yesterday was just perfect! And to imagine this involved the air force number 2 just boggles the mind!

    • It is so dumb to expect an ejector seat in such a plane. I would want to believe such seats are only in fighter jets/planes. Maybe a parachute makes some sense. This kind of shallowness in Zambia is nauseating.

  10. The real question is what is the state of those planes? How often are they maintained, by which company? What is the fleet replacement policy? Is it followed. What is the average age of the fleet? Has ZAF invested in training facilities, equipment and people? This is an appalling accident record by ZAF.

  11. Imwe ba fikala. Why do you keep demonisin my president over anything? If i were the president i would hunt u busterds down one by one.

  12. Ba IG shed weight. You’re many kilos heavier you’re struggling to breath properly. Eating properly, eh?
