Press statement for immediate release

PRESIDENT SATA SHOULD BE THE LAST OLD PRESIDENT FOR ZAMBIA

As MMD youths, we wish to reiterate our earlier call for young Zambians to position themselves for leadership of this great nation.

History shows that young people in Zambia have sacrificed tremendously for the development of Zambia. In 1964, youths marched the Cha Cha Cha way and freed the country from colonial rule. In 1991, youths rallied and ushered in a muti-party democratic dispensation and the same youths defended constitutional order during the third term debate and recent history also shows that young Zambians brought about the 2011 revolution.

With such historical benefits, it goes without saying that 2016 provides the best opportunity for young Zambians to effectively participate in governance of this great nation.

With all the valuable lessons learnt since 1964, Zambians youths are now more than ready to get the mantle from old politicians. We believe that the Zambia we now have today would have been far much better if space was created for effective youth participation.

Zambian youth is astute, knowledgeable, assertive and ready to govern. Space in the governance system should be created for the youths to participate.

As long as political leadership remains a preserve of the old politicians, economic empowerment of the young people will remain a dream. The level of economic deprivation among the youths of Zambia today is a crisis.

Majority youths are languishing in high levels of poverty. A simple analysis shows that very few youths below 35 own any serious property in any part of Zambia.

In Kabulonga suburb for instance, all the key properties in that area are owned by old people. As long as young people do not have access to leadership positions, we might as well forget about having a wealthy nation.

All the government contracts are awarded to companies and organisations owned by old people. The young people do not have access to any form of economic support to sustain their livelihoods.

The future of Zambia is in the youth. We therefore condemn attempts by some old politicians to wish to cling on to power. Miscalculated attempts by some old politicians to bar and discourage young politicians from ascending to key leadership roles should be condemned by all well-meaning Zambians.

We should stand together and denounce the habit by old politician to trample on the rights and opportunities of young people and ensure that political space is created for their meaningful contribution.

This call for young leadership in politics is across party lines and should therefore be embraced by the political structure of this great nation.

  1. The way ZW reports, you may think Sata is not going to live for another 2 days. I have come to conclude that only fools believe everything ZW writes.

    • You won’t see Sata alive again. It is over. You should have read Fred Mmembe’s editorial yesterday. In fact you should read it if you haven’t read it. It talks about preparing for a funeral.

    • Imwe ba Wimu …Leave the ZWD alone and please just read your Post – King Fred has predicted that Sata will soon die and is preparing pfools for the Kobras funeral…Kaseba will soon join Maureen and Vera!

    • @wimu, its hard to swallow. believe me you, from the little analysis of events of the past 4 weeks, the chances that sata is alive are less than 1%. i.e. non arrival of a purported challenger jet, non presentation of birthday cake to the presido, no trace or photo of the presido since his return, gathering of his children, silence of his press aid chello, non activity of his face book page since june 6th etc etc. so just start adjusting my dear

    • THAT’S WHY I STOPPED READING ZWD AND TUMFWEKO, THOUGH TUMFWEKO IS A MILDER. IT’S ALL ABOUT HATING SATA FOR HAVING WON THE 2011 ELECTIONS AND H LOSING THE ELECTION EVEN THOUGH THERE WAS AND STILL THERE’S NOTHING SUGGESTING THAT HH IS ANYWHERE NEAR PLOT 1. THERE ARE A LOT OF DEVELOPMENTAL PROJECTS GOING ON ALL OVER ZAMBIA WHICH PAPERS CAN BE REPORTING ON INCLUDING INVESTIGATIVE REPORTING RATHER THAN PERSONALITY ISSUES.

    • Sata is brain dead. His mouth and his brain do not co-ordinate any more just like he made fun of the best president Zambia ever had. Ati aleluka noku polomya sana. Teti akwanishe okulanda noku iminina eka . Nikatwishi, only counting days.

Another plausible theory has emerged that he landed in Zambia via one of the Airforce bases and then transferred to Nkwazi house in a chopper. Another source is saying he is due to be taken to South Africa for a last attempt to redeem him from the clutches of death.

Kabimba in the mean time has been side lined in favour of Lungu to act as president until the convention to select a new PF leader or until Sata is certified dead.

  2. Old presidents have archaic thinking and stale old ideas.Younger presidents like Obama,Uhuru,Kagame and Cameron are dynamic and open minded unlike Sata.

  3. The Zambian voting psyche is fundamentalist. We prey on history and refuse to look forward. We believe that the names that shook the waves are the preserve of power and prosperity. It is not about so-called old people; it is about disentangling ourselves from the thinking that wisdom lies in rhetoric. Let us widen our spectrum, relax our minds and usher in new names. That is the only way forward.

  4. yes you are right even Kaunda was a youth when he became a president but ended up ruling for 27 years. he resigned as an old man.

  5. Obama is an utter failure. He has messed up American health, defence, economic and social system. HH is young but he has been very greedy and selfish. He was part of the Cartel comprising of a few lawyers and accountants who helped Chiluba to steal and in the process they all enriched themselves by privatising parastatals, sitting on committees, liquidating companies, getting kickbacks and favours from foreign investors and selling parastatals for a song. Only choice left is Father Bwalya.

    • Nkonshya…

Stop lying and misleading Zambians. Do you think Mwanawasa could have spared HH had he done or participated in plunder? Remember that the late President went all out to investigate and prosecute (not persecute) all those wanting. HH is a very good person and compares very favourably with Hon. Munkombwe when it comes to kindness and generosity.

False accusers are as disgusting as homos/lesbians, thieves, money launderers, corrupt public servants, murderers etc.

Bring out the facts. You, as a citizen can actually sue HH if you have the evidence. I personally would love to see HH prosecuted if he really did those things.

    • Am not sure if u live in USA,before Obama we were closing companies rapidly, unwarranted wars, greedy healthcare system especially on pre existing conditions, currently the healthcare insurance are consumer oriented, withdraw of troops from Iraq, economy recovery at average of 150000 jobs per month.why are Republicans quite on attacking Obama on economy nowadays?

    • Bufi ubu. Which money did HH steal? Why has nobody including your ever vengeful PF never taken him to court over the same? HH is one of the most generous people in this country. People on wheelchairs know him very well. He has just refused to carry cameras wherever he has gone to donate because he does not want cheap publicity. Be fair to people and remove prejudices whenever you are judging them. All what Obama has done is end senseless wars and improve on the health care for the poor. This to some of you is failure because you have been indoctrinated by lies from PF.

  6. Lusambo is a hired gun. Somebody in MMD is feeling uneasy and knows that he might not be adopted for presidency. Has Lusambo and his paymaster ever heard of Reverse Psychology?

  7. It’s really not about the age that matters, it’s having the best interest of the nation at that leader’s old or young heart. Both KK and Kafupi were youthful when they assumed power, but all they achieved was drive Zambia into a deep economic hole out of which the PF govt is hopelessly out of depth to cope with. Deng Xiaoping of China was very old when he took over from Mao Tsetung, and immediately commenced economic and social reforms that has now trnasformed and catapulted China into the ranks of the super rich nations. In contrast most Zambian politicians, both young and old, don’t care a rat’s ass about the country but themselves. This is the problem, compounded by a lack of a proper constitution and strong institutions.

  8. What Zambia needs is strategic/visionary leadership with integrity to manage the natural endowment for the common good. Value addition/industrialisation, technological transfer and stop exporting raw materials but finished products to net in more and equitable distribution of wealth. Youth comprise majority of voters therefore the youth are to blame for voting in geriatric leadership.

  9. My son looks at Lusambo as a very old man not fit for presidency. Age is relative. Learn to qualify your words. In a sense anyone is that lives is old.

  10. We all know that he has had this dementia since he assumed office making all his tribalistic appointments null and void. As soon as the new president comes into office, all Sata’s stinking tribal appointments must be reversed forthwith.

  11. Who says entering politics makes one rich? The youth should first put education first not drinking with little monies they have and womanising . Youths should event some things in the field of engineering. Lets all not look to politics to get rich. Lets do other development ideas . Given Lubinda would suit for a while. Youths let us not be vuvuzelas , lets add value to our country. Kabvuluvulu

  12. Reading yesterday’s Post Comment, it looks like M’Membe is now telling his friend Sata and his family to accept and prepare for death with dignity and now “ukuwayawaya no kula pita pita mumbali”. We do not want what happened to Meles Zenawi in Ethiopia and Bingu Mutharika in Malawi to repeat itself here, now. If one has to pack, as we all will one day, and made rendezvous with our creator, it’s shameful to start hiding, ducking and diving because no such antics can curve one an extension to the lease of life when the contract has expired. Not even the most powerful sangoma from kwaNabwalya can save Abena Ukwa Charlie Kays.

  13. Is this Lusambo’s intellectual level? The few mistakes seem deliberately induced to give a resemblance of Lusambo’s vocabulary. If the real writer has conviction in this opinion why not come out in the open? The MMD is clear about candidature. The fact that one is the President of the party does not automatically qualify one to be the presidential candidate. NEC has to vote! Is this the fear for an RB come back? Which old man is sending jitters? What if we say, we need a unifier, a father figure to concentrate on rebuilding, and uniting the nation rather than worrying about re-election in 2016? What if we say those that are aspiring must work in an RB government to see how they can run a ministry before aspiring to run the country? What if we say, it’s too close for another experiment?…

  14. The first teen president was Chiluba. He was a man of a mess. The first old president from MMD was equally a mess.

This madala is proving his worth!

  15. MWAICE LUSAMBO, WHICH CONSTITUTION DID YOU READ WHICH BARS CERTAIN AGE GROUPS OF PEOPLE IN ZAMBIA FROM STANDING FOR ELECTIONS ESPECIALLY THE ONE YOU HAVE MENTIONED. MWAICE KASAMBILILE NGA TAWAYA KU SUKULU TO PROPERLY EMPOWER YOURSELF. NOT EVEN US CAN BAR PEOPLE ELDERLY PEOPLE FROM BEING CANDIDATES OF PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS. THERE ARE ARE OF COURSE OTHERS ISSUES THAT CAN DO THAT.

  16. Dont beat about the bush LUSAMBO is hired by NEVERS MUMBA through his Private Secretary RAPHAEL NAKACHINDA who hates RB with passion. This guy Nakachinda talks very bad of RB every time, but he pretends when he goes to court and meet RB. RB is the only another hope for MMD, this soo called new hope of NEVERS MUMBA can never work because it has failed to make the PARTY attractive since this man was put as a President, so u cant risk going to Presidential election with such a candidate.

  17. Don’t talk about age ,talk about is if you can deliver not just talking most of the so called youths have been implicated in corruption eg HH who has at his age stolen from poor zambians what can you expect from him , how ever what matters is how you can perfom people know whom to vote for history tells the story not age,

  18. I appreciate the analysis and intellectually engaging comments on this post. Its from such insights that we need to ground our thinking and approaches to solve our crisis in Zambia. Most of you colleagues posting great views are in the diaspora, I think that it is difficult to solve such problems if you are shooting from afar.

  19. FTJ was also relatively young when he entered state house. The results are there to show for themselves: Designer clothes, girlfriends, divorcing of wives, off-shore accounts, childish hollow speeches, cosmetic economic policies, ETC.

Let presidential candidates be gauged on their policies, character, manners, vision, strength, principles, fear of God etc.

  20. By saying that “As long as young people do not have access to leadership positions, we might as well forget about having a wealthy nation” you sound like youths would like to have the oppportunity to “create” wealth for themselves by abusing leadrship postions! You remind me of FTJ when he said that “fumenipo naifwe tulilepo!”

  21. ..interesting topic indeed. First let us define the ‘OLD’..what do we mean by that..??..a 50 yr old man was considered to be ‘very old’ in the sixties. These days they are considered as ‘young men’. Look at the likes of Kofi Anan, our very own General Miyanda, Proffesor Mwanalushi to mention but a few, wouldn’t they deserve to be voted into the highest office..??
The problem is not the ‘old men’, its the pattern, mode and characteristic of the voting system. How would I have convinced my 68 yr old uncle in Mongu , Kasama to vote otherwise in 2011 after being told what he wanted to hear.??…that young man after buying him a packet of shakers just before elections and a promising a crate of the same after winning…the young man in neighbourhood excited with mob influence…??

  22. Do I have to be a rocket scientist to see that this is about Mulenga Sata! How long will MMD tolerate this guy. He is a young Daniel Munkombwe in their midist. Work up MMD don’t say you were never warned. Isn’t this the guy Mulenga Sata used to dupe MMD councilors in Solwezi?

  23. What is the definition of youth? Fifteen to twenty four years old. How old is Lusambo? Oh, I forgot that ni ba yufi, NOT ba youth?
