GENDER and Child Development Minister Inonge Wina has extolled her late husband Arthur Wina, describing him as a selfless man who was dedicated to duty.

Ms Wina described her late husband during the Arthur Wina Day at Arthur Wina Primary School in Lusaka yesterday as idealistic, principled, courageous, caring and honest.

“In our family, we have a family motto which is so that we may be of service and for Arthur Wina the call to serve was always stuck at his heart. He cared deeply for the people, especially the rural poor. He also understood their needs on firsthand experience in spite of his international exposure,” she said.

Ms Wina said in politics, Mr Wina was idealistic and a humble politician whose intellectual power and deep appreciation for the political well being of society was at times misunderstood.

“In politics, Arthur Wina hated the pursuit of selfish advantage. He tried to be above connivance and political scheming that is why as a leader of MMD, he lost the presidency at the primary election of February 1991. He strived to work and maintain principles for the general good,” she said.

Ms Wina also commended Arthur Wina Primary School’s first headteacher Roy Mwaba, who is also Zambia Congress of Trade Unions, general secretary, for being instrumental in coming up with the name of the school in honour of the late politician.

She also urged the pupils to take education seriously if they wanted to get to higher heights besides imploring the school management to ensure that the girl child was encouraged to go beyond Grade Nine.

Veteran politician and Freedom Fighter, Sikota Wina, who is the brother to the late Mr Wina, described his brother as an “extremely interesting man” who sacrificed a lot for the benefit of the country.

“It was the same man who when he went to California for his PHD he had only about two or three months more remaining before he wrote his Thesis to become Dr Arthur Wina when Kenneth Kaunda called him from there to say come and stand for elections if you are interested. And Arthur Wina said the call of my country is bigger than a PHD degree,” he said.

And Lusaka Deputy Mayor, Portipher Tembo, has paid tribute to the late Arthur Wina for the contribution he made towards Zambia’s attainment of independence.

Mr Tembo said the history of Zambia is incomplete without the mention of Mr Wina whom he said played a pivotal role in the liberation struggle.

Officiating at the Arthur Wina Day celebrations held at Arthur Wina Primary school in Lusaka today, Mr Tembo described the late freedom fighter as a gallant son of Africa.

He said he was greatly honoured to be associated with the memorable occasion, adding that Mr Wina was a symbol to the country which he said awakens memories of political emancipation.

Every year, Arthur Wina Primary School commemorates Arthur Wina Day in remembrance of the late freedom fighter whose name the school bears.

The event, which was characterised by traditional dances from teachers and pupils, was attended by, among other people, Kabwata Member of Parliament, Given Lubinda, area Councilor, Maggie Zulu, Zambia Congress of Trade Unions General Secretary, Roy Mwaaba and the Wina family.

Meanwhile, Gender and Child Development Minister, Inonge Wina, who was also attending the same event, bemoaned the increase of Gender Based Violence (GBV) cases in the country.

Ms Wina told ZANIS that not only is GBV a crime but also a sin and that there is need for perpetrators to be sentenced for life.

She said there is need to intensify sensitisation in the community regarding the rights of women and the dignity of humans.

And while donating various materials to Arthur Wina Primary School, Gender and Child Development Permanent Secretary, Daisy Ngambi, advised teachers to take time to impart knowledge of gender violence to the pupils in classes.

Mr Wina was born on July 21, 1929 and died on September 3, 1995.

    • KK recalling students @ school …very retrogressive .Imagine if I was recalled 3 months before my G12 exams..???

    • @Saulosi, how old where you when Arthur was in politics, or which book did you read?
What I only know is that is that Arthur was well married, both Arthur and Inonge made a perfect couple. Compared to for example:
Sata vs Kaseba. What will Kaseba write about her husband, honestly?

    • Nostradamus i was a young man. I also remember attending a MMD rally in 1991. Arthur Wina died when i was in grade 8(1995).

    • @Nostradumus
I attended my first campaign rally was when i was just a small boy in 1991. My neighbour took me.On that day the guy who took me ended up getting beaten by unip cadres because he was putting on a MMD t-shirt .And that kick started my interest in politics.

    • There’s no way you can write a Ph. D dissertation in three months ba Sikota unless it is a Master’s Thesis !

    • @Saulosi, kanshi uli mwaiche iwe. Yes he was powerful, sharp man, now memories are coming back. Ifwe we used to study for exams in civics for questions such as:
Q13. Who was first Finance Minister of Zambia
      a) Arthur Wina
      b) Luke Mwananshiku

But these days, you can’t even use any PF Minister in Exams, not even Civics or Social Studies classes.

    • @Nubian Princess, please reread Sikota’s statement. It says…”He only had two or three months more remaining before he wrote his thesis…..” This is far from what you are trying to imply. Go back to school girl . Take with you the two empty heads who think that your poor English comprehension makes sense.

    • @nubian princess or whatever, YES you can: I wrote mine in two months and I’ve had a student do theirs in three months. Anyhow that really wasn’t the point of the author!!!

  1. Arthur Wina goes down in Zambia’s history as a hero and giant among giants of liberation. It is gratifying his principles form a legacy as relived by Mrs Wina.

  2. The late Arthur Wina was a principled man who championed the cause of democracy. Why did this Adis Ababa-recruit turn against her own Lozi people by flirting with Sata and PF? What has been going on behind the curtain between Sata and Inonge?

  3. LT please, you repeatedly refer to my favourite Zambian auntie as Ms Wina, she is Mrs Wina. You should know there is a difference between Ms and Mrs.

  4. @Nubian Princess – read the paragraph again n I think u will understand. You also should not forget that Sikota didn’t write what we are reading. Ask LT for a recorded version if u still have a problem. 3 months before he wrote is different from what u r saying. Remember there’s what is said n what is implied

  5. @Nubian Princess – read the paragraph again n I think u will understand. You also should not forget that Sikota didn’t write what we are reading. Ask LT for a recorded version if u still have a problem. 3 months before he wrote is different from what u r saying. Remember there’s what is said n what is implied. The easiest way to interpret this is simply saying he QUIT his studies when he was almost done

  6. Good man but treated me badly. Didn’t like my guts and my sexual life. Kept and educated me in his house however, and I appreciate. Today I own the biggest newspaper company in Zambia. His Biggest weakness: INSATIABLE APPETITE FOR MONEY AND WHISKEY.

  7. He was a good man, good intellect, and nice political stature. Wife may know even home departments where he was great.

  8. #Patriotic conFusion, you don’t sit for a thesis like an examination on a particular day and time. You write your thesis over a period of time. Perhaps he meant before he went to present and defend his work before the faculty board, he was then asked to stand for elections back home in Zambia.

  9. @ Leo Phiri,
Actually you are very right, it is well known that the then Bemba speaking leaders of the MMD treacherously ganged up in dark corners against the late Arthur Wina to install one of their own, the crooked Chiluba.

  10. @the london eye and mwansa kabinga
y do you guys always think with yo tribe than with yo brain? come on guys quit those nonse,i think u ar too smart to engage yourself in those cheap talks.wats wrong with someone associating with his fellow ZAMBIANS? just bcoz they ar bembaz nowanda that kind of mentality cant bring development u will owaz remain backward and last.

    • @seniormostman,
Why are you jittery when a spade is called a spade. You have not even made an attempt to challenge the truthfulness of my statement and Mwansa Kabinga’s because they are facts. This is not about tribe but about the ‘coincidence’ that those who ousted the late Wina were from one tribal grouping.

    • The London Eye is right. I was there. In fact the one who spearheaded the fight for the reintroduction of multipartism is Zambia was Arthur Wina, not Chiluba as is generally believed. Chiluba became a beneficiary after the repeal of Article 4 of the Constitution. Chiluba was elected President of MMD in February 1991 after the transformation of MMD into a polical party. The constitution was amended in December 1990 to provide for the reintroduction of multipartism. Sikota Wina and the princess actually turned against Arthur Wina and supported Chiluba. Later they paid the price as the man they had supported turned against them.

  11. He was a good man, but there was a recent editorial in your nephew’s Paper which listed him as among rich men who was rejected by the electorate because …….

  12. We must learn from history – to abandon a PHD programme for a political position is like running out of the bathroom just before finishing to bath and get into mixing yourself with mud.

  13. The Winas sacrificed Bulozi for Zambia. They guided Kaunda’s tyranny against Bulozi and trashed the BA64 of which they were architects. It’s Sikota who is a more “interesting” man who up to this day has no house in his Namboma village. Inonge continues this Wina tradition of treachery by associating with Sata and his Pack of Fools (PF).

  14. He was a good man, despite umwangashi. He’s one of the reasons why KK threatened to resign in 1973, if you remember “the day without a president”. KK said he was stepping down because he can’t lead a nation of drunkards..nabo ba KK balemeka pantu balibatumpike ati wamuyayaya. ahe thought he was indispensable.

  15. ARTHUR WINA was a cabbage and sell out to the LOZI’s BRE, CHECK THE WIFE SHE WENT TO bed WITH PF and became part of the LIARS to restore BRE…Please don’t lie that WINA was recalled during his PhD studies, if he was remaining with FEW months why didn’t he write his Thesis even when in Zambia, PhD thesis is not like G12 WHEN EXAM DATE IS PASSED U ARE DONE. SO DON’T CHEAT PIPO HE COULDNT JUST MAKE IT TO THE SWEET PhD title
