Opposition People’s Democratic Party President, George Mpombo has commended the Electoral Commission of Zambia for not succumbing to legal manoeuvres by the Patriotic Front to halt the holding of the Zambezi West by-election on 11th September in an attempt to block UPND’s Charles Kakoma from re-contesting the seat.

PF’s Zambezi West losing candidate Christabel Ngimbu has asked the Supreme Court to stay the by-election until determination of an appeal against the High Court judgment which cleared to Mr.Kakoma re-contest the Parliamentary seat his lost through nullification.

In a telephone in interview with Qfm news, Dr. Mpombo says the decision by the ECZ is also a victory for Democracy and boosts the confidence of the Zambian people in the country’s electoral body.

Dr. Mpombo has however advised the ruling PF to instead deploy itself on the ground and campaign vigorously in areas where it is weak so that it can compete on an even ground with other participating political parties as opposed to frustrating the electoral process.

He says further delaying the by-elections in constituencies where the polls have been pending for a long time will only disadvantage people from having representation in Parliament.

Dr Mpombo says the ruling party should thus keep it in mind that its continued maneuvers to halt by-elections has already affected the flow of development in areas which do have representation in Parliament.

  1. Busy advising the PF to “campaign campaign vigorously in areas where it is weak so that it can compete on an even ground with other participating political parties”……What about your party ewe George? You waste a lot of our time with your inbriglio!

  2. Really, how can a ruling party behave that way? It’s them who petitioned and now why should they start applying delaying tactics?God has a way of fixing crooked people. This is exactly what is happening to PF.

  3. Ha Ha ! so we have many people going to belong to the new organization called Electoral Corruption of Zambia.Who will head it ? Who are the potential members ? we shall know them by their fruits.

  4. Mr Mpombo we invite u to come to Zambezi and assess for yourself if at all there is any development done by the candidate you are supporting who thrives on corruption for the 15 years he has been around.Out of the 5 candidates, its most likely he will get the least number of votes.I don’t like people who worship and glorify wrong things.

  5. African Countries will continue to lag behind due to corrupt practices which have destroyed the moral fabric of these primitive societies.Corrupt people are held in high esteem and while those who frown upon it it like this girl Christabel has done are hated.I thank God i am not a native of this dark continent. Time will come when there will be no donor funds and you will perish like rats…we shall be there to watch.

  6. Dr Mpombo ? Since when did he earn a phd ? Or is it one of those honorary things ? If it is a honorary doctorate , as I suspect, it is highly irregular for Mpombo to be addressed as or call himself as Dr. Zambians have this uncivilsed habit of calling themselves or being addressed as Dr when all they have are honorary doctorates. Our media personnel are also to blame for perpertuating this komboni behaviour for not being aware that such people are not supposed to be called Dr. Can someone train our media people properly.
Maureen Mwanawasa, Kenneth Kaunda, late Fredrick Chiluba, Nevers Mumba, are some of the Zambians who have been wrongly called Dr. None of these people studied for an earned a phd. They were merely conferred with Honorary doctorates which do not entitle them to use Dr…

  7. @ Rotten teeth. An honorary degree is given in recognition of an honoured persons excellent contribution. If Sata for example wanted to take a PhD in say for arguments sake, Running A Country, would it not be a waste of time, since he already has run a country? The educational system is set up to be accessible to all people. That is why, previous experience count towards your study units, allowing you to get credits for what you already have learned AND experienced. There is a snobbery which is being used to assess President Sata. Unfortunately, this snobbery is now applied to ordinary citizens. It is a persons integrity and experience that matters, even educated people follow wrong policies, I.e. Margaret Thatcher and many western politicians bring their country to recession.

  8. Just a bit more…a Was it not educated Bankers that gave us subprime mortgages, unsecured loans to poor people? In the UK church leaders gave condemned these educated leaders of the time who used their education to bring the world to it’s
Knees; Gordon Brown all with excellent education allowed economies to crash even though, their educated minds came up with policies that lead to the worst recession ever. We have to be careful whom we vote for. It cannot be just an educated person, but one that also demonstrates honesty, AND is not violent. Elitism will lead us nowhere. Remember the French Revolution? The poor rose to rid of Marie Antoinette and Louis XVI using the motto, Liberty Equality, and Fraternity. Should we not try that?
