PF presidential hopeful Edgar Lungu has laughed off reports that he has a serious drinking problem and runs an unstable home.

Mr. Lungu said such reports are part of a smear campaign by his political enemies meant to dent his public image.

He said he has learnt over the years he has been in politics not to pay much attention to efforts by his political opponents to slander his name.

“This story started way back when I expressed interest to contest the Chawama seat, some of my opponents started running stories that i drink too much. I don’t have a drinking people. How can someone with a drinking problem manage to handle all these huge responsibilities? This is a work of my enemies,” Mr. Lungu said.

He continued, “Some of the people peddling these lies today were my client. I represented some newspaper which is today writing stories that I drink too much and it won a landmark case. Mr. Sata taught me to ignore some of these rumours as a holder of public office.”

And Mr. Lungu had declared that he is the right man to lead to succeed late President Michael Sata.

“I spent a lot of time with the man we have just buried and I believe I can carry on with his vision. You have seen the amount of support I’m receiving from the MPs and the party in general. This is testatement that people have seen what I can offer.”

He said he managed within two months of becoming Justice Minister to release the draft constitution which had stalled for many months.

Mr. Lungu said he identifies with the problems that Zambians are facing because he regularly interacts with the people of Chawama and other.

Mr. Lungu said he has managed to juggle all the positions he has because he believes in consultative leadership.

On the general conference, Mr. Lungu said the wishes of the collective wishes of the Central Committee and the party membership shall prevail.

“Let me take this opportunity to state that am not scared of going to the general conference. What I have said is that if the central committee feels there is no need to go for the general conference so be it. Our constitution gives powers to the central committee to make decisions in between the general conference.”
By press time, Mr. Lungu was in the process of submitting his nomination papers to PF Acting President Guy Scott at Cabinet Office.

He is expected to address his supporters at NASDEC grounds shortly after filling in his nomination papers.

      I’m not even remotely sure why people want to vote for him? I’m even more disgusted by my fellow UNZA graduates who can’t even articulate why they think he will make a good leader? Surely our years at university should have introduced us to some critical thinking.

    • 1. Edgar Lungu is the best choice PF has if it ever entertains any hopes of remaining in power. Edgar has a lot of support from many provinces and people, the picture above is just a tip of the iceberg of people supporting Lungu.

      2. Edgar Lungu is the ONLY PF candidate who can split the Eastern Province votes, given the recent events in MMD people in EP would rather vote for EL instead of RB or Mumba.

      3. GBM claims he has Kasama support, but the youths in Kasama want Miles. They both do not have support from entire Northern.

      4. Mulenga Sata should try 2016, it’s too early, he needs time to prepare.

      MPs supporting EL don’t give up, he’s your best bait. No one else in PF has such National support.

    • Edgar Lungu is a coward who even feared to go to his own convetion. It is good that he has finally bowed down to presure and let him now resign as PF Secretary General and Kabimba to take over. Watch the space, Edgar Lungu is loosing to GBM. GBM has about 5730 supporters from the General Comference while Edgar is just being supported by 70 Power Hungrey Hyners (MPs) and his concubine Cathrine Namugala the prostitute who is not even PF. Which supporters ? Those are just unemployed youths the General Comference will judge Edgar Lungu harshly.

    • With due respect EL is popular in Chawama, in Cabinet, in Lusaka, in Eastern Province, but I strongly believe he could be mince meat candidate to Opposition Parties, and might be hard to sell nationwide within two months. God is on our side for the first time to have given courage to a candidate still in tears who needs no campaigns other than mentioning her name. She is most neutral to win an election amongst all the other nine known aspiring candidates in PF. EL claims to had worked closely with the late President, but Dr. Kaseba 24/7 lived, advised, influenced, cared for and supported Mr. Sata each moment of their life together. The crowds surrounding EL are cheer-leaders, but in EL’s heart and with God in prayer it is clear and possible for EL to humbly conceed defeat.

    Everyone in the PF envies the kind of public support Edgar Lungu is getting from the general populace.
    If at all he is a drunk, I would say in the 3 years he has been in government, he has outperformed many sober minded individuals. In my opinion, the Post is scathing Edgar because they fear the kind of leader he can be, fearless. Facts are this “If you think Fred Mmembe criticises Edgar Lungu because he cares for you or our country, then you need to think again”.

      You wonder why Miles Sampa, Mulenga Sata And Bwalya, are putting their reputations on the line. They need to drop their campaigns and unite behind Lungu and PF. the General Convention cannot select any other leader than Lungu, because it would be preposterous to go against party members.

      The MPs and CCMs behind him are true political analysts. They have recognised the need for PF to pull itself out of the ‘Cartel’ politics for the survival of the party.

For a leader, stability in marriage should not be overlooked. If a man fails to run his own home, how can he run a nation?   38. Go Edgar, we are solidly behind you. Even in Southern Province, people want Edgar to stand. We all believe he can make a better president.
    1. The time he acted, there was more sanity than what we see under Scott.
    2. His approach to the constitution process was more mature than that of Kabimba.
    3. His support from Cabinet and PF MPs beats any other contestant
    4. Sata trusted him so much that he gave him four sensitive positions in the country, and he managed them very well. Only a mature and intelligent person can manage that. He was PF Secretary General, Acting Republican President, Minister of Justice and Minister of Defence at the same time. Do you think Scott, Sampa, Mulenga or GBM can manage that?

  40. Don’t worry the walking stick, that is possibly his chosen symbol just like KK has hi white hank. The fact remain he is a great leader with strong leadership qualities.
    If you doubt ask people in the Ministries he manages, his PSs do not have any problems working with him. Even defence chiefs have confidence in him.
    It is for this reason that the late president called him back to receive instruments of power even when more than 13 million others were within the country. He did not see them capable to carry this heavy mantle.

    Lungu has come with the wife and all Zambians know her now. But HH has not shown us his wife since he joined politics 2002. How can we vote for a person whom we don’t know if he has a wife or not? HH has not told us the truth about his wife….may be she is a woman friend. On this reason we cant vote for HH.

  48. My fears about the PF is that when Edgar loses at the congress he is going to break away from the PF. In a democracy when you enter a race you must be ready to Win or Lose. EL is self annoited because he is assumming by acting as President meant that Sata had blessed him to take over the leadership of the party, constitution of no constitution. Imagine if MCS had passed on (God forbid) when GBM or ABC or even Winter Kabimba was acting , is correct to imagine that the president had decided to had over the power to the acting President……NOOOOOOO….big No Mr. Lungu.   60. For whatever reason, Edgar Lungu is too desperate to become president. He has so far tried by hook or crook to hijack PF from everybody else. He is using back doors and dark corner meetings. Resisting an convention and trying to short-circuit things through the Central Committee instead. He has used his position as SG to his advantage. I would be weary of such a person. He is not straight. If anything, he is corrupt. On top of that, he is a confirmed drunkard. That is a red flag.

The most amazing thing I have noticed about some Zambians is that they are so gullible, Fred Membe could mark a bottle of water as cooking oil and some Zambians would buy it believing it was oil. That there are Zambians who still believe in the lies spread by the post will never cease to amaze me.

      My father was a drunkard and died from complications of the liver due to excessive drinking. I can tell when I meet a drunkard. Lungu looks like one through and through. Collaborative evidence is also piling-up from all directions. If Zambians want to vote for a drunkard, then Lungu is the man.

  62. Edgar Lungu is the chosen one. Just look at his aura and quite charisma! He presents well. He is tall, slender and his suits fit well, very dapper. This is a man we can be proud of representing us at UN and internationally. His wife is beautifully Zambian. Well rounded, and elegant in a Zambian cultural way. For those that not done art; her African print though not notable us very well colour combined. It uses the colour wheel very expertly. The dusky orange with Blues and tones of Brown meld well. Her hair is suited to her face. They look like a Presidential fit for State House.

    The problem Edgar has is from the self righteous Bemba Clique that has decided to miss-represent President Sata for their own gain

Ordinarily there is a societal, rule as Sata taught him correctly; ‘Never Complain, Never Explain.’ Well brought up people understand not to react to ill mannered people who hurl personal insults and malicious rumours at others. You must never satisfy wrongful people by giving them time. But in this case it is acceptable. His image must be fairly represented and his PR must show his winning side. They have cleverly turned the table on the negative campaigners. He is a man of the people.

      Comments by his enemies, are mostly churlish.

      This is a beautiful son of Zambia. Able to provide Leadership in a Consultative manner as shown by the caliber of his support. I am very proud of the PF members who have stood up for righteousness.

There is nothing good that can come out of RB. He had his three years in power and the Zambians rejected him. What new ideas will he bring except to plunder. His 2011 election was the most extravagant we have ever seen, even street lights were dressed in RB chitenge. He is the most wasteful president we have had. When going to Mfuwe, he would go with his children, their wives and grand children at government expense. Shame on him.

  82. There is no need for a PF convention. The grubby white man at the centre of our gov’t is just playing with our democracy by fostering the interests of parties external to and other than the people of Zambia.

    Guy Scott is not correct in his actions. If the calibre of opponents was heavier then it could have been the correct way foward. But a senior Party Member with multiple portfolios has been bullied and treated in a shameful way by Guy Scott in an effort to undermine him. Lungu now has to compete with junior ministers, with less portfolios and mediocre Sata family members, who should not be shaming him by failing to uphold the PF party unity. Maybe their conduct shows a flawed family trait.

Does he have a Police Permit for taking those MPs and PF cadres along to Cabinet Office? He is breaking the law and law shall visit him. Is he not the one who is in charge of ministry of justice?   90. I do not have a problem with EL being the next president but having had PF in power for the past 3 years makes me wonder what type of cabinet is he going to have. From what what i see now, I can safely say sata was a very strong man and leader who managed to steer the all nation by himself. He managed to keep his useless MPs in check. But EL has`nt got all this and if he becomes president it will be free for all, this guy is to small to control these useless MPs in check and govern at the same time.     • Good analysis. Besides, the other concern that has been raised is that Lungu is a drunkard. He disputes it. However, there is no smoke without fire. I don’t think we can afford to entrust the affairs of a country to a drunkard. Even if we were to give him the rare benefit of a doubt here and assume that he doesn’t drink, the stigma is still there. There are people who are not going to vote for Lungu purely on that basis and that basis alone. Can PF afford to risk losing this election just because Lungu is a sacred cow?

Zambian breweries must be very worried at all the seemingly silly comments about those who consume their products, despite the positive contribution beer drinkers make to the treasury and support in job creation efforts by buying beer from ZB. 20% of road accidents are caused by drunk drivers.   102. Once a thief always a thief. This is the man you want to give keys to the treasury through his minister of finance? I can bet you the next govt will arrest him for theft and will make Chiluba’s thieving seem like a joke. LAZ does not just discipline its members for nothing. They only do so when evidence has been provided to them but shame that they do not hand the culprits to law enforcement because they would have saved us this discussion a long time ago. Thieving is a habit just like drinking is. Zambians you have no standards to be considering someone whose practicing license was withdrawn for sometime. He is denying about being a drunkard how about stealing money for clients?
