Continuity in Mediocrity: The Dangers of Visionless Leadership

Share

Hjoe Moono

When a society is constantly faced with mediocre leadership, sadly, mediocrity becomes the standard, the norm, and anything better is impossible; anything better is abnormal, and those that dare to aim beyond mediocre become enemies of the ‘status-quo’.

Today I listen and read with sadness some politicians saying: “I wish to continue our founding father’s vision.”

What vision? Your founding father’s vision is the reason for the crisis we face on both the political and economic fronts, the mediocre aims and governance style are now your yardstick? Could it be that Zambians do not crave for better that these politicians can, without shame, share no vision, but rather offer continuity of mediocrity?

The problems that Zambia faces today; Economic, Governance or otherwise were not thrust upon us by a cruel act of God or a random assignment of poor leaders imposed on us, no, they are as a result of the poor leadership choices we have made over the years. Choices which even when clearly wrong, we have refused to reform and make new ones, but accepted to be governed by the mediocre type of leadership that now even basks in the glory of ‘continuity in mediocrity’. We have accepted the status quo as the norm. Mediocre has become the norm. This need not continue. We can put a stop to the rot.

For a while now, we have seen the so called ‘vision’ which some politicians wish to carry on; Tribalism, regionalism, nepotism, family forests, corruption, abuse of authority, poor economic governance and crude violation of peoples’ freedoms. And yet, someone is proud of such and wishes to carry on. Colleagues, do we deserve such?

Is this the future and continuity that we wish for our nation? I am not sure about you, dear reader, but my answer is no! I do not wish no mediocre. Under the current and recent leadership, what we celebrated to be liberation has been reduced to an ugly sight of tribalism, racism and never ending dirty power struggles. And this is the leadership that wishes to continue as is, to continue with the mediocre legacy of old? No!

Let us face it, colleagues, the real crisis that is facing Zambia is that the so called power holders are nothing but opportunists that have disguised their personal intentions as national interests. Isn’t the present bickering and never ending court battles within the current government a reflection of a lack of concern and regard for national Zambian interests? How can we expect such a calibre of leadership to lead a modern but diverse nation? We cannot, and we shouldn’t.

The cost of a mediocre leadership, a leadership that piggy backs on past failed glory is a huge cost to Zambia. Lack of clear succession rules in our governing party is a clear case of leadership failure, yet we even entertain and pledge allegiance to failure, to mediocre? No! A leadership that emerges from such is not expected to be strong, no, it will be feeble, weak, and lack legitimacy, and that is where the danger lies.

Such a leadership would live in perpetual fear and anxiety about sustenance beyond 2016, and alas, they become predators that are a danger to a sober and sane life. But then, if we continue on this path of settling for the status quo, for weak leaders who have no plans for the country, mediocre leaders, then clearly this reflects our society. Because mediocre leadership reflects the mediocrity of the society it emerges from.

Dancing and singing for a clueless and mediocre leadership is a clear form of national suicide. Succumbing to the divisive ploys of a directionless leadership means disaster for Zambia. We have seen such divisive ploys in the last weeks. We have seen and heard how some of these leaders have no plans of their own. Our modern Zambian society should not have space for such mediocre species of politicians.

However, I cannot blame strongly the leadership that came to us on the basis of a deceitful song, no, that would be giving them too much credit. I blame ourselves, the citizenry for allowing such to govern us. I do not believe that we a society built on deceit to be governed through deceit by deceitful leaders. I do not believe that we are a society of tribalists and regionalists to be governed by those that mask their tribalism as nationalism. I further blame ourselves for electing leaders lacking national vision.

Finally, let us realise that a mediocre and weak government will be unable to undertake economic policy reforms that are so dearly needed. We have heard already that they do not wish to change anything. The price for the mediocre, arrogance and egocentric political leaders will be paid by the poor in our society. We cannot allow such to continue. Nelson Mandela once said:

“It always seems impossible until it is done”.

Assuredly I say unto you, we can take mediocre governance out of daily lives.

Vote wisely on January 20th 2015.

Say No to Mediocre Leadership!

  1. Obama said: “Yes We Can”… and I am saying “Yes We Can”.

The problem lies with the cadres who are just used and dumped by our selfish politicians. Cadres who are just bought chibuku and a few Hungarian sausages and “vwala”, there goes the vote. The problem lies with us Zambians not wanting to take over the leadership of our country but leave it to those who”will give us jobs and business contracts”. Did anyone EVER think the likes of GBM, Willie Nsanda, would EVER get to the power corridors of this country? Just how and why did we ever vote the PF into power? How?????? Sanity is the only salvation needed now for mother Zambia. Employment levels are so high and it is the unemployed that politicians are exploiting, to give them nothing in return…but they convice them vote for…

    • Keep it up! These are the articles worth publishing in your publications ba LT.

What the author is saying is absolutely true. Zambians should for once learn to stand up against mediocre leadership from recycled politicians who belong to failed past regimes.

PF and Lungu have no shame to hinge their campaigns on shambolic policies and governance promoted by Sata- a violent , corrupt, tribalist and most divisive character Zambia has ever had.

Zambians I believe are peaceful but not stupid to allow this madness in PF to preside over their national affairs again.

The biggest problem Zambians have with regard to politics is this “HOUSE NIGGER” ( muzungu anikonde) attitude which impairs their judgement .

I believe Zambia has great potential if people stop being “HOUSE…

    • Never blame others for what you not able to do. If you can’t beat them, join them hoes the saying. Chaku baba. Lungu is next President. Amen.

    • Ba sir ba Moono we are voting for Lungu and not your tribe’s man. If you have a problem with that its your problem dont make it mine and my family.

    • Good article! One thing is that Zambia has no ability to elect a sensible person as President. HH is too good for Zambia. The average IQ of most Zambians can only go for people like Willie Nsanda, Nkandu Luo, Jean Kapata, Frank Bwalya, Edgar Lungu— who can earn a living outside politics.

Just look at Lungu, apart from embezzling his client`s money, the guy is literally telling Zambians that, he has no vision, and also that he does not know what a vision is, and yet many Zambians support him.

    • BIG L ULICHIKOPO you are decampaining Edgar.Dont talk about tribe in modern Zambia were we have inter marriages . What is tribe to us. Remember Hilary Clinton was front runner the moment he talked of race referring to Obama, and Obama never answered back but continued debating about the Economy ,Obama won the race.HH is anointed he will win the tribal talk is out dated Boss. This 2014.

  2. Unfortunately these chaps called politicians come cheat us and we vote for them. The strategy must be to remove governments every so often so that they learn that we need seriousness, we removed MMD, we should now remove PF, till it sinks in politicians that we need seriousness. We should put new guys, they play around we also remove them

    • Clementina

      Such is life..

Politics is the same all over the world. ..even in the big economies. ..just the playing field is a bit different

And as humans. .we expect too much and we are never satisfied. …

My only advice to you as a dear friend is that you give PF ( Edgar ) a chance to rule Zambia.

      2015 vote PF ( Edgar )

      I thank you

    • And if you keep removing and replacing with people who always have to have a fresh start and before they settle in and finish some of their programs you put in another one and so on and son on, then what will you accomplish? there’s a good reason why all the world stood for a 5 year term of office and then you can plan to put in a new one if you so like. therefore 5 year term is not over yet.

  3. I have discovered that Edgar is more truthful than HH in promises.I would rather vote for some1 who is not promising mountains.

    • Out of curiosity – what promises were made by Edgar’s party – as those are now credited to him under the name of continuity – which is his current position. That adjusts the promises balance sheet – not so?

In effect he is promising to keep the promises of the one who made promises before him and simply not adding to them – which is smart considering those promises are factually too numerous to mention in one sitting and most were broken within 90 days. Chuckle.

I wouldn’t base my vote on any politician’s promises. The world over those are broken once in power. Politicians lie. All of them. Tis the nature of the game. I would look at other areas for an answer…

    • @chambala
This is the mediocrity we are talking g about. How can you possibly vote for a visionless leader? Or am I wasting my time for a hopeless fellow like you?

  4. We removed MMD from power so that our livelyhood could improve. PF came on the scene and our economic conditions have worsened, and the question is why do some people still consider PF a factor. I fail to understand this.

    • And you think putting in HH will improve “Your” livelihood? The secret is to work hard not waiting for politicians to come and improve your livelihood, you are just an individual among 14 million zambians. Work hard, be self-reliant, and then your livelihood will improve. not politicians to do that for u.

    • Politicians will not make your livelihood better, but they provide the environment of peace, stability and equity in which individuals and firms can work hard and realise and increase their wealth. Without peace your handwork will amount to nothing. How can you progress when your sweat is eroded by depreciation; when you are fired from the job that is your only source of income. Thus we need politicians to make an enabling environment in which we can work hard and prosper.

    • Ben if the prices of commodities and other inputs keep rising everyday that chokes the economy so that even if you work hard you will only earn enough for hand to mouth. Like it or not government policy has a huge impact on smes and the current policies do not help smes which invalidates your extremely simplistic reasoning.

    • Ok gents. Put in whoever you like and lets see whether your livelihood will improve unless he is your relative. Otherwise it will always be same old complaints till kingdom come. For now keep on putting in and putting out and be ready to ever complain. Truth is no man will ever satisfy every Zambian desire like it or not.

  5. So this tonga man is telling us to vote for his tribe man indirectly but he forgets that his relative ascended to the upnd summit thru a slogan that only tongas cud lead the part and worse he is promising same things that the cobra promised but failed to implement.

    • Boring tonga story again. Be objective. Anyway we are resolved as Zambians even if you bring in the tonga dimension.

    • @Mkunda @Nathan Shumba.

Typical of PF dunderheads. When exposed and told the truth they scream tribalism.

Big minds in UPND discuss ideas while f00ls in PF scream tribalism. What a shame!

Are these the kind of leaders Zambia needs? Really?

      I do not think so.

Most PF supporters are “HOUSE NIGGER”

  6. When looking for leadership it is important to look at records, we need to verify if indeed Edgar Lungu’ s law practicing certificate was truly suspended by LAZ for theft. I don’t hate the man, but if it’s true we need to consider that. In America for example, if you have such a record you can’t even attempt at leadership, you will be filtered out. Even just drunken driving will make you fail to aspire for leadership, that is how serious they want truthfulness in leadership.

  7. well balanced article. Suffice it to say that its not practical to continue or carry another persons vision when that vision is blared and the critical features of that vision are just but folklore. To put up such a slogan is testimony that one has nothing to offer; probably dreaming of state funded health care abroad and glamorous funeral and burial at embassy park. God forbid.

  8. Mr Sata with his PF party came to power by promises of lies governed the nation by deceit and attempted to develop the country through deception. His strategy was tribalism and regionalism masquerading as patriotic while hiding his core tribal belief. Confirmation is who holds positions PF government. This should NEVER EVER allowed by politicians to hoodwink innocent minds of Zambians. We need to change today as we go to vote and vote out PF cadres who have told lies times without number.

  9. The internet if full of smart people. …special analysts. .advisers…lawyers. .doctors…
All just commenting and complaining behind their keyboards. ..but where are all these guys in real life.. please come help us ….i see so many big brainers online but I rarely see them in real life…
    * just wondering*

    Anyway

    • Dude! I thought you were in Kitwe! Shouldn’t you be busy mobilising the masses and stuff?

Without your help they might run in to spots of trouble – like motorists refusing to give way because it’s Saturday, or weddings unable to use that Parklands roundabout for their pictures coz brides don’t exactly want machetes in their background shots of their big day!

KB, I am actually disappointed. You mean you’re not there???

    • Can’t wait Dude! So buildings in Kitwe are on fire after the Minister of Defence stormed the city? Oh dear. It’s a faulty Zamtel connection… what did you say again?

Good luck today. I look forward to seeing the panoramic images! I am guessing they will be going for size of crowd versus content. Chuckle.

  10. Hh has never been elected in any worthwhile elections, thats why if we were to further copy from the American constitution things like running mate we should also bring in clauses like everyone should be a senetor meaning one must have been an MP before to show their worthyness, that they have been elected before. Apart from KK and FTJ who was never an MP for obvoius reasons the rest were once elected MP for some contituencies in Zambia. Now this Sunny Chintombwa has never been an MP, or otherwise to a very responsible position in government for him to tell us that his leadership style is good. What can he show us to that effect the privatisation was a scam which made him very rich. Come on Zambians these leaders parading themselves in darkness before chiefs are also not trustworthy.
    It…

      Just spread this message

      2015 vote PF ( Edgar )

      I thank you

      ps: Kitwe is on fire

    • @mwine mushi. Most likely you have misunderstood Hjoe Moono. I expected you to say “BRAVO! HJoe”. This is so because he has brought out the real issues in our current leadership. Anyway thanx for noting that our best leaders so far KK & FTJ, who brought us out of pain, were never MPs before, so this point qualifies Mr HH for Candidacy.

@katondo boys, they say “politics is a dirty game”, this is so because dirty people have infiltrated politics with their pangas and insults. So most *brainers* are unconfortable with this level of immaturity. Example: Look at what is left of our Prof. Chirwa!

@MKunda, If a Bemba Supports Miles or Sata it is Objective. When a Tonga supports HH, Mamamamamama! “Tribalist!”. Who then is tribalist? I think you are out of time… & my G7 son…

    • @Mwine Mushi

Think before you comment please. What you suggested is utter rubbish.

Its this kind of thinking that perpetuates mediocrity in leadership because the so called politicians who have been in office before are the very failures who have failed to deliver on their electoral pledges and messed up the system to enrich themselves.

Whats the point of promoting a long serving employee in spite of his/her incompetence.?

      Fact:

PF is full of incompetent leaders.

    • @Mwine Mushi

Stop lying to your fellow PF minions please. You are confusing them.

Why are you PF dunderheads lying to each other about the American constitution?

In America any one can stand as an independent presidential candidate without having been in an elected office before. All this lies being spewed by one Mwine Mushi is just utter village mentality stemming out of desperation because he has run out of ideas on which to drum up support for PF and Lungu.

By the way in America, Miles Sampa can be allowed to stand for presidency as an independent candidate.

PF minions keep dreaming while FLIGHT HH2015 landed in Kabwe yesterday and will be addressing another mammoth rally today.

Aleisa Aleisa give way PF please.

  11. Am at loss with this article. Does the author anderstand the purpose of an election? If u fail to sell your product, it simply means that it is of lower value and can not compete. The author is frustrated because HH has been rejected by Zambians three times. He is heading for another loss even if he is promising heaven on earth.

    • Wanzelu its these names you call all people with different views I despise. You are always calling people morons,minions.dunderheads.fools. So according to you smart people are only found in UPND.? Has HH ever won an election be it at party level.? You say Lungu stole from a client, is HH perfect when we know he stole from poor zambians.

    • I fail to understand how some bloggers deliberately forget that Sata stood and was rejected 4 times before he won on 5th time. So what is different with HH trying his luck? Miyanda and Nawakwi have also been rejected 4 times already and all you do is pick on HH. Let Zambians decide for themselves and not resort to your blind following. All candidates have equal rights to put their vision forward and if your leader is visionless then he does not deserve to lead the country. Mr Katondo Boys I wonder how much you have been paid to campaign HH. It looks like even unrelated articles to you must always be attached to HH. I do not see anywhere in the article where the writer has named a party or even candidate.

  12. One does not need to be an MP before to be a leader. Leadership is having capacity to deliver. We just recently had a leader who was a branch, ward and constituency chairman and MP and just look at the state of our country. The economy is in shambles. I conquer with the other writer, we must continue substituting governments until politicians understand we have the power. Let’s stop mediocrity. PF should go and the sooner this us done the better. People are going without food and some of you are blogging for jokes

  13. So to Moono, HH is the only candidate with a vision? So you think Sata had no vision? What about the 650 health posts he started, 8000link, L400, Pave2000, revamping of UTH, high perks for civil servants, Construction of Univetsities, Construction of airports, Chingola-Kitwe dual carriage way, bumper harvest, massive construction everywhere you go, building of bridges, investor confidence, infrustructure in new districts, upgrading of gravel roads to bituminous standards, rule of law, etc. look for instance in compounds how roads are being tarred eg the roads in Ndola. Ring roads. NCZ is running, etc. That is why the Chinese laugh at us to say Zambians have full of theories, while them (Chinese) are busy constructing. So HH won’t do all these? They are not part of the vision

    • BBC

      I thank you

    • Even with all these examples ; achieved a less than 3 yrs, they claim Sata had no vision ????
In truth it is ONLY Sata: out of ALL Zambias’ past presidents who seemed to have planned what he wanted to do in that office. Bambi ni sangwapo fye , as Meembe would say. Batasha icho wamona

  14. The article should be looked at seriously by all Zambians with a view to change the way we vote. We should start looking at contestants for the top job more critically by putting them under the microscope. What is their credibility, integrity and what have they achieved in life? If Zambia was your company, which one of them can you trust to run it successfully, profitably? When you have subjected them to these tests, only then can you be able to know whether a particular candidate is suitable for the job and can therefore fulfill the various promises made. Failure to do this means cadres, crooks will continue calling the shots in our lives. Do we deserve this life sentence? NO!!

  15. Don’t mistake projects started by MMD to be Sata’s projects. You must measure success through economic indicators and not the non existing 650 health posts. The price of the staple food alone should be able to tell you if your so called ring roads are adding value to the quality of life.

  16. If u say that HH want the zambian constitution to be liked to American constitution then he should not stand at all because he is failed on three occasions. Let him leave it for someone else to lead.

    • Punish Man

Have you watched the movie ‘ the punisher’

  17. People will decide who to vote for or not, leave the American constitution out. But we still can’t have drunkards with criminal records being elected. We need to start being serious, the nation will only develop if we all start being serious with the leadership we put in place. This country is too rich to be poor

  18. All we need is ONE leader who will deliver even ONE BASIC promise that uplifts a mass of people and not necessarily those on a bus traveling on a good road. We need our citizenry to be able to arrive home and still be as comfortable as they were on your nicely tarred road. Therein lies the secret.

  19. The problem Zambian critics have is that they criticize because they have the time. Moono is basically giving us an opinion of how he views our condition as Zambian voters and I think he believes there is little rationality in electing leadership and he did not lamp this on Edgar, or Miles or HH. He further complained about a leader who goes to Radio and speaks to the nation that “I have no plan”.
Moono is wondering what would make an objective Zambian choose such a leader for those that are giving us a road map. No offence but when a leader gives you a plan, it’s not your place to say it can’t work, but I believe that it’s in your right to ask “how can this be done?” And I think this is an objective question, rather than just arguing without options or preferences. Thank you for…

  20. I REALLY HAVE NO PLAN. BA PF, STOP ARGUING… YOU ARE MAKING THIS HH MORE POPULAR & PEOPLE ARE ASKING ME TOO MANY QUESTIONS BECAUSE OF THESE UNNECESARY COMMENTS YOU ARE MAKING.

HOW EVER, LET US CONCENTRATE ON OUR FOREFATHER’S PLAN OF CONFUSING THE VOTER. THIS IS THE “DONT KUBEBA” PLAN. “PAMAKA!”

  21. Very nice article warning us against voting for a mediocre Politician who is HH. HH is very mediocre as he is clueless in all national issues. HH has no experience not even at ward level. HH is full of mediocrity and that’s why Zambians will not vote for him. The only person who shows wisdom and intelligence is Edigar Lungu. Zambians are voting Edigar Lungu come January 20, 2014.

  30. Edgar Lungu might win the presidency but will be a complete failure. This guy is highly corrupt, I am an insider giving Zambians free information. No wonder you saw in Chipata and Mongu him offloading hard cash as bribes. Even most comments you see on this blog is coming from unprincipled souls who are heavily bribed be EL, that’s his modus operandi. Highly corrupt to the core. If you want to know how the crocodiles lives ask the hippo, I know him too too well. He might be a bigger failure than his late boss

  31. We have tried Edgar Lungu and PF before, it’s all failures written all over the show, ask us here in Chawama if we are any better, the reality is a big NO. Infact us in Chawama which is Edgar Lungu’ s constituency have settled for HH. Edgar betrayed our trust for non performance

  32. Am reliably informed that the euphoria that used to characterize Sata rallies in Kitwe is not the same today. Wina azalila riding on SATA s popularity.

  33. Good article! One thing is that Zambia has no ability to elect a sensible.

  35. It’s a kaponya economy. Ethics, quality substituted for substandard choices. Either Chibamba Kanyama or Martin Kalungu Banda once said ‘Poor people have the propensity to make poor decisions’. This is what we are seeing AGAIN.

  36. This article is absolutely spot on…old man’s Sata’s vision was to get into State House…he was a useless, visionless leader anybody who shares that shambolic, myopic vision is equally as useless as he was. The likes of Edgar Lungu, Sampa etc are all selfish in for one and to preserve the status quo of corruption and deceit as they were part of the selfsame corrupt system…cadres wake up!!

  37. Sadly, this mediocrity will continue even under UPND, why? Because Hakainde Hichilema is not 13 million Zambians. More than that, he leads a party that has not held a public convention for 10 years. He leads a party that is not rooted in the grassroots but a few intelligentsia at the top who keep sharing portfolios. Michael Sata was the leader who would have changed Zambia but sickness robbed him of that opportunity. For 2 years the man could not travel around the country to stop people sh itti ng in the bush. Only Sata could say it and people would listen. Sata could have with just one word cleared the streets of all vendors, but at the same time he had feelings. I see no other politician who can combine firmness with fairness, dictatorship with benevolence, complexity with clarity.
