The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) says it has continued to score a number of successes in the fight against corruption.

ACC Public Relations Manager Timothy Moono says the ACC made a number of arrests and secured a number of convictions in 2014.

Mr. Moono says this was possible through the implementation of the national anti-corruption policy and the integrity committee programme which have continued to progress steadily.

He disclosed in a press statement released to ZANIS in Lusaka today saying this was due to the confidence in its work from members of the public.

Mr. Moono said some highlights of high profile arrests, ongoing matters and convictions which occurred during the year under review included, the arrest of former Copperbelt Police Commissioner Mary Tembo, former Zambia Railways Limited Chief Executive Officer Clive Chirwa and other.

He added that other high profile cases involved the conviction of former ZAF Commander, Andrew Sakala, the arrest of Livingstone Town Clerk Vivien Chikoti and former Director of Engineering at Kabwe Municipal Council and, Cosmas Mpundu among others.

And Mr. Moono has revealed that last year, the ACC received a total of 2,245 reports of suspected corruption compared to 1,987 reports received in 2013 translating an increase of 258 reports.

He said by the close of the year, there were a total of 1, 316 cases under investigations.

He said the ACC recorded 35 arrests countrywide while 64 prosecution cases were before the courts of law.

The ACC secured 10 convictions and recorded five acquittals, 12 cases were pending judgment, and four cases were appealed against.

He said in 2014, the ACC begun its operational expansion exercise with the aim of creating presence at district level with Chirundu office opened.

“The Commission is pleased with the support it continues to receive from the general public as well as from key stakeholders. I would like to thank the government, corporating partners, other law enforcement agencies, civil society organizations and the media for their confidence placed on the Commission for their continued support in the fight against graft. This is a major ingredient in making headway in the fight against corruption,” Mr. Moono said.

Mr. Moono added that in discharging its mandate, the ACC would in 2015 devise and implement new strategies and initiatives towards tackling the corruption scourge.

He disclosed that the ACC would procure an electronic case management system in order to enhance the management of investigations and prosecution cases which currently is manually handled.

He said the ACC would build capacity on its staff, strengthen engagement of citizens, civil society organizations and traditional leaders in anti-corruption initiatives.

Mr. Moono further said ACC would secure appropriate office accommodation in provinces in a bid to curb corruption and making Zambia a better place to live in and conduct business.

He stated that the Commission would not relent in its efforts to rid Zambia of corruption and pledged that 2015 will be a year of stronger partnerships, continued resolve and intensified efforts in combating corruption.

  1. Only you can control your success and happiness. Work hard and be a good person for its own value, not from fear of an imaginary god or belief in useless annointing/magic oils and con-men “prophets”

  2. ACC, you received instructions not to investigate Nkabimba over alleged Trafigura oil deals and other high profile cases. But you prosecuted the hapless and the helpless. That negates all your so called “achievements”.

Try again this year, Mr Moono, we may just listen to you.
