A human rights activist in Lusaka has condemned opposition United Party for National Development (UPND) president, Hakainde Hichilema for allegedly claiming that he has already won the January 20 presidential election.
Human rights campaigner and activist Samuel Kasankha said Mr. Hichilema’s statement is undemocratic and can threaten public order should he fail to win the election.
Mr. Kasankha said democracy requires that candidates enjoy supremely confidence of winning but not declaring themselves before the official results from the electoral body, the Electoral Commission of Zambia.
“Presidential candidates should only express their confidence rather than claim victory in the manner Mr. Hichilema is doing. The statement is undemocratic in the sense that it works on the psychology of gullible voters who might be coerced into not voting at all if Mr.
Hichilema is not their preferred candidate. This is disenfranchisement of gullible voters,” Mr. Kasankha said.
He said in a press statement released to ZANIS in Lusaka today that Mr. Hichilema’s claim that there was no way the ruling PF could win the election unless they steal was gross inflammatory as it has the potential to incite his supporters to violent acts by rejecting any other result even if such result be genuine.
He has since advised the opposition leader to be a true democrat and avoid underrating his other competitors in the presidential race.
Mr. Kasankha further advised Mr. Hichilema and other contenders, to continue campaigning and leave the final decision to the Zambian voters adding that any departure from this would infringe on the human rights enjoyed by the people of Zambia.
“For as long as people have not yet voted, there is no full-proof yardstick to measure the outcome,” Mr. Kasankha said.
UPND leader Mr. Hichilema, who featured on Hot FM Radio programme yesterday, declared himself a winner of the January 20 poll.
Ten males and one female candidate are vying the highest office in the land. The presidential election was created following the demise of late president Michael Sata in October last year.
Emmanuel Mwamba aka Kaminamisa Lungu’s propagandist also fired by Sata, recently said PF have also already won the election and can even stop campaigning. So why is HH statement any different. We did not hear you complain about it.

Premature declaration of having won the Presidential elections is a recipe for provoking confusion in the nation. This could prepare the masses to revolt violently in the event of having actually lost the election.
The system demands that it allows the process of voting, counting of votes to go along as per laid down laws of Zambia. Both HH and Lungu must learn to be calm and the await for the official declaration of the results by the Returning Officer

I have stated several time that this is not the time for Ing’ombe Ilede. He will be only leading the votes in three provinces namely; southern, western and north western. In Luapula he will be third though PF will have 92 percent 4 percent will go to FDD and 4 percent for others. EL don’t come to Luapula for campaigning since we want to teach the under 5 a lesson…

Northern and Luapula provinces in 2011 gave HH less than SIX THOUSAND (6 000) votes from a population of ONE MILLION registered voters.
