UNITED Party for National Development (UPND) president Hakainde Hichilema says it is the responsibility of the government in power to provide for the vulnerable in society.
Mr Hichilema said when he featured on a QFM special radio programme yesterday that if elected into office, he will provide for citizens who cannot afford education and access to healthcare.
Mr Hichilema also promised to develop the agriculture sector if elected into office in the January 20 presidential election.
“The people who cannot afford the basic needs in society are the responsibility of Government and this is what the UPND will do,” Mr Hichilema said.
He said the UPND has the right vision to revamp agriculture through investment in the sector and to ensure that farmers are paid on time for maize sold to the Food Reserve Agency.
He said agriculture is a key sector in any economy because it helps to reduce food prices.
Mr Hichilema said high food prices, especially mealie-meal is worrisome.
He said food is a necessity that should be affordable for citizens, especially the vulnerable.
Mr Hichilema also said UPND will endeavour to improve the education sector by providing free education for those who cannot afford it.
He said economic development is guaranteed if citizens are educated.
Mr Hichilema said UPND will enhance service delivery in the health sector and ensure medicines are available in health centres.
Asked on how he will run the country when he does not have enough members of Parliament (MPs), Mr Hichilema said he has MPs from MMD and Patriotic Front at his disposal if he wins the presidential election.

Free education exists here in the UK my friend. When we say free education we mean its free at the point of delivery but paid for through taxation of the income people earn and spend.
Income tax and VAT money should pay for education for all not only for the children and families of the top government officials as is the right now.
