FDD President Edith Nawakwi addresses a rally in Monze

Opposition FDD President Edith Nawakwi says Southern Province will not run the country as a province if their leaders continue issuing tribal
statements whenever they go to campaign in the province.Ms. Nawakwi has also challenged candidates that are looking down on her that she cannot run the country on account of her gender to produce their Curriculum Vitae (CVs) for people to judge.

On Tribal lines

Speaking when she addressed a mammoth rally in Monze on Wednesday the opposition leader said there is no one province that can win and
govern the country without the help of other provinces. She said Southern Province will remain in opposition in for decades if their leaders continued to preach tribalism whenever they address them.

The FDD Leader observed that the province has for the last 15 years voted for UPND but the party continues to be in opposition an
indication that it needs support from other provinces to govern.

“I hear one of the leaders told people in this province that it is your duty to vote for him because he is your brother, please reject
such statements because you can’t just vote for someone because of tribe. When your leaders come telling you that chase them. Tell them to go back to Lusaka and continue drinking coffee because now there is only
one tribe called Zambia she said.

On Edgar Lungu’s remarks about her gender

And Ms. Nawakwi has challenged candidates telling people not to vote for her because is a woman to produce their CVs and compare with hers
for people to judge who is the most qualified to take up the nation’s top job.

[pullquote]let me tell him that he has just acted as president for 11 days and that does not make him qualified to be President of this country[/pullquote]

She said she has served as Minister for ten years and as MP for two different constituencies for 15years something no candidate among the
eleven candidates can boast of.

“Edgar Lungu went to tell people in Isoka that don’t vote for Nawakwi because she is a woman but let me tell him that he has just acted as
president for 11 days and that does not make him qualified to be President of this country.

No one among the rest 10 knows how to negotiate for the country more than I do. I was Minister in four different Ministries for 10 years
and MP for fifteen years in two different constituencies show me anyone who has this CV among the rest, none!.

Besides a woman is in charge of the strongest in economy in the world so what is Edgar talking about. And this same man is still clinging on
to the name of late President Michael Sata. Does it mean he can’t sell himself without using the late president’s name and image?” she
questioned.

On Jean Kapata tearing FDD posters

And the Opposition FDD President has threatened to report Tourism Minister and Mandevu MP Jean Kapata to the police and the Electoral
Commission of Zambia if she continues tearing down her campaign posters.

The opposition leader says Ms. Kapata should not take the confusion in her party to the FDD as the party does not engage in uncivilized
politics which was an order of the day in the ruling PF.Ms. Nawakwi said her party has carried out issued based campaigns and would not allow uncivilized elements from other political parties to tarnish the good name and reputation the party has so far earned.

“Ms. Kapata is on rampage organizing and supervising youths to tear down our posters in Mandevu Constituency after realizing that our
party is spreading like bush fire in the area. She knows that she has lost her popularity in her constituency and now she is venting her
anger at my posters.” Ms. Nawakwi said.

Ms. Kapata has been accused of personally supervising the tearing down posters of FDD president Edith Nawakwi in Roma her residential area
and other areas in Mandevu constituency and threatening to beat up taxi drivers who have been helping the FDD leader to put up posters in
the area.

  1. Edith Nawakwi, I heard from reliable sources that you are an issue based politician and faired very well during a recent radio discussion. I am proud that you have managed to pull a decent crowd in Monze, it speaks to your character. Even though I now that this election will be difficult for you to win, I am really proud of how you have represented our gender. Congratulations Madam and hope that 2016 will get you more MPs in parley. All the best.

    • I like the way Nawakwi has conducted herself in this election. Her Party can do well in next year`s general elections if she works hard on establishing FDD structures countrywide. Very smart woman too. On the list of Presidential aspirants on HH and Sondashi , the rest cant match her brains.

    • And please, Madam Nawakwi, next time don’t jump into that canoe without a life-jacket, you are a huge asset to our country.

    • Agreed. She has run a decent campaign… even if her Fun Detection Delegation are out measuring excitement levels. I liked her decentralization talk and she does not mince her words either. Hope she has a good day next week.

    • i know remember my friend @Nostradamus suggested to PF to `rent in` or borrow Nawakwi as leader after Sata died,,, men! PF dumheads insulted him…. you see now,, Nawakwi is pulling huge masses,,,, it wont be easier for PF, If you steal this one, you will have more headach come next year 2016

    • I am getting impressed by Nawakwi’s conduct and issue based campaign. The attendance of people at her public meetings are improving too.

She may not win the election next week but surely she is now a respected opposition leader.

This is how you win the hearts and minds of the people

I hope the Unreasonable People Never Deliver (upnd) have learnt something from this lady instead of thinking like they are entitled to the presidency

      keep it up Edith

    • Sorry to say i never heard any issues from the above story apart from attacking her rivals. Plis i stand to be corrected

    • I’ve always respected madam Nawakwi though she must first of all admit she made a lot of mistakes in MMD, if she comes clean and admits she erred in all those positions she was in then for sure she is a leader worth her weight in salt!! If she doesn’t and instead continues to brag at how great she was as a minister in a govt that ruined Zambia then she is no better than the man who sent poor miners to an early grave in the form of one HH!!!

****VIVA EDGAR LUNGU 2015 AND 2016****

    • Glad to see that Nawakwi has been received in Western, Noryhwestern & southern province. We all kow hat these provinces have voted for leaders wh are not from there but if it was a lozi, Tonga or Kaonde candidate in Northern or Muchinga the situation would have been different. Talk of tribalism will end the day the vote for a candidate who is from a different region. Don’t mention EL because he is being carried by a bemba dominated party that was formed to protect & promote bemba interest.

      #Before u say anything, I AM NOT A UPND MEMBER#

  2. mayo nashala neka party so try in 2026 after HH has done his presidency. UPND has distanced itself from Munkombwe’s remark so what are you yapping about. work on your ever dwindling support. FDD at one time had a lot of MPs alas today you have failed to propel the party. by the way we have not forgotten about th Carlington YELLOW maize saga when you were finance minister.

    • Yes its one zambia one nation, why being tribalism, exercises love BECAUSE GOD IS LOVE,BE LIKE,a country that speak only one language that’s why we zambians,if you want to know a zambian meet him in usa,Russia,uk etc you will regret meeting he or she

  3. Iwe Chi Munkombwe,If you want a Tonga President, why did UPND decide to compose their campaign song (Moses wanomba) in Bemba.
They shud have sang it in Tonga.Malabishi
We’ll withdraw the song so that you can compose your own in Tonga.
    Kikikiki

  4. I like the way Nawakwi has conducted herself in this election. Her Party do well in next year`s general elections if she works hard on establishing structures countrywide. Very smart woman too. On the list of Presidential aspirants on HH and Sondashi , the rest cant match her brains.

  5. “he has just acted as president for 11 days and that does not make him qualified to be President of this country…”

Oh my. She sure can throw a decent punch!

So Scott has acted longer than ED ever has… hmm. I wonder what Scott versus Lungu would have looked like… swirling dream effect… voting with pangas in the air…oh that’s how we got here…

    Silly me.

  6. There’s a presidential debate this evening on Hot FM 87.7. And for those in the diaspora you can tune in through google – Zambia online radio free -. Our president HH will be amongst the candidates debating today. Heard that EL won’t be participating as he is campaigning.

  7. Can Edith swim?
That is the height of bravery. I have operated a dugout canoe before, it’s quite a treat, but you better know how to float. And there she is without a floating vest. wow!

  8. Ms Nawakwi,I never heard you condemn your tribal sister Jean Kapata when she uttered those tribal remarks later accused UPND of having sponsored a musical group to compose the non exitent ‘song mu bemba ngu satani”.WHY?

UPND dissociated itself from the tribal sentiments made by Daniel Munkombwe just as they did when Mr.Madyenkuku made the unfortunate statements that only a Tonga for UPND presidency. Why are you raising the issue?

By the way people remember how you back stabbed HH during the UDC failed project.

  9. 1. speaker Dr. Mumba – MMD, 2. speaker Peter Sinkamba – Green Party, 3. speaker Ms. Edith Nawakwi, 4. speaker President Hakainde Hichilema 5. speaker Elias Chipimo Jr.

Just done their introductory speeches – brief profile of themselves. Our President HH spoke in less than 2 minutes.

    • I am seriously missing out on this. Tried to access but there appears to be aproblem with the connection.

    • Pretty keep the commentary coming – can’t listen at the moment but will keep an eye here – and twitter of course

  10. Nawakwi is an issue based politician in the pack, some even peddling ubufi like free education to tertiary level. Mukafumya kwisa indalama imwe namachushi twakwata munochalo? Bushe muli bena America mwa, uko twaumfwa ati indalama shabafye mu muti, their only problem is for the Republicans and Democrats to agree how to spend the money…….kikikiki

    • Has anyone discussed FREE education so far?

Thought it was job creation – Nawakwi talked about changing current academic syllabuses to job related syllabuses.

  11. Atase ka Edith kanshi wali tumpa?

I thought you were pretty middle-of-the-road. Why make reference to Southen Province and by implication Mr. Hichilema as being tribalistic?
I had entertained the idea of your taking up some key office for UPND when they ascend to power. But now, no. And what’s that sh!te about coffee and Lusaka?
I’ll tell you this, and I’ll tell it to you for free:

You are in a vulnerable position already as a woman contesting a male-dominated arena (in a culturally chauvinistic environment for that matter). You will never win a mud-slinging contest as it’s so easy to reduce a woman to the lowest common denominator simply by sticking a label on her. Therefore you should have stayed clean, fought the battle long and hard without inviting our ire – Sha!

    • Speaker, please keep the commentary coming. I am unable to stream the station from my computer. Quite frustrating.

  12. Tell these tongas to stop tribal politics bcoz they’re very few in zambia.whether they like it or not, bemba speakers are the majority then easterners,so this route of tribalism which UPND has taken will never take their leader to state house!!!THINGS ARE GETTING BETTER AND BETTER FOR EDGAR LUNGU BCOZ HE IS BEING BACKED BY MAJORITY ZAMBIANS!!!

  13. She also appeared on ZNBC on tuesday evening and so far shes the best intelligent speaker.I wish women would support her am sure shes experienced and intelligent to be the president.I wish there could be adebate easpecially for EL,HH EN and am sure she will excell above the 2.EL is the waste speaker as if hes not a lawyer or he went for adult education. He not fluent.

  14. debated job creation – HH talked about real job, reduction of retirement age to 55 to allow the younger generation get jobs and grow their careers. high cost of living the last three years

Green party as usual fussing over the marijuana issues. Focus on the greens and not the mines.

Nawakwi talks about changing syllabus so that children can think informal job – running businesses

    • Thanks Miss Pretty, I will not even bother to comment on Green Party. Miss Nawakwi has made a very valid point, the idea of educating our youth to expand their options either as employees or employers is where we should be heading and obviously creating the right environment in which to allow this to happen. HH’s remark about retirement is also welcome, however the follow through is a little flawed. Retirement age is only applicable to the public sector and not every youth will get a job in government, what about jobs in the private sector?, how do we create that kind of an environment?.

  15. For those experiencing connection problems, you have to keep trying. Had similar probs 15 mins before the debate and had to repeatedly try to connect before the debate. Still experiencing a few interruptions altho negligible.

    • Freaky and strange mysterious problems with connection. Has been identified now as a power outage at Mulungushi. Hahahaha… the Dark Knight cometh… see what happens when you don’t show up? Everyone else sounds like they are having fun and you wind up sitting at home with ZESCO on speed dial yelling, “Kill the light!” Hahahaha. Just show up ED and say you’re on Zed time. I’m missing you. We could have balanced out things as everyone else appears to have a vision of their own.

      Chuckle.

    • Hr did it! It’s Edgar, I swear I saw him do it!

      @LT

What’s wrong with sharing my favourite tweets? You’ve now stopped me.

Come on….it ain’t hurting no one. And you should have had a seperate thread for the debate anyway. We now have to use Nawaki’s thread for the debate – not professional uh uh.

    • I agree with you Jessie 100%, LT should have had a separate thread for the presidential debates so that we could all contribute, tweets and all.

  16. You are good lady madam. You are highly qualified with good plan.Dont lower your self to the levels of Dora Siliya and Sylvia Masebo. Ignore tribal talk which is food for lesser minds. You are above such talks madam. You are truelly a Presidential material.

  17. power outage during presidential debate??!!! But you were also asked to come out and play Edgar! Stop it at once!

  18. go ahead edith, you can make a good head of state. It is just that our level of political maturity and gender biases have not yet reached a point where we can have a female president. Nontheless dont give up, continue pressing forward.

  19. Agriculture policy – late payments

MMD- policies are clear. agric and food security is important
agric implements – customs excise duty to be lifted for two years
Green party – abolish FRA to revert to cooperatives unions
agriculture dev bank to give loans to farmers (marijuana sales)
FDD – tragic story of providing cash transfer. FRA has failed – meant to be a reserve

UPND – agric is fundamental. Farmer himself and wants to make agric viable. Farmers growing at a profit. Low cost of production. Lower fertiliser. Fuel. At his insistance the PF govt have lowered fuel. Next elec. Increase production by lowing cost of production
NAREP – Zambia shud be able to provide agric products for the whole continent. Good soils.Namibia imports from Argentine…

    • Miss Pretty, I am just reacting based on what you are writing as I am unable to stream the program.

MMD and UPND have shown policy direction here and have touched on fundamental issues. Nawakwi has shown much on this point because Agriculture is bigger than just focusing on Maize, you also have to look at livestock, fisheries and other crops. NAREP’s statement is general and lacks specifics, how do we produce for the whole continent, what are the steps to be taken?

  20. So Edgar, you’re watching this and you ain’t even ashamed? Even Nawakwi a girl had the balls to step up there.

    Shame Mr. Lungu.

They say Ninety percent of success is just showing up. Learn that and learn it well

    • EL couldn’t have managed to debate. I think that is now obvious to PF cadres and supporters. They FORCED the wrong guy to be president. Strange tho’ that as a lawyer he can’t debate issues.

  21. ‘Value addition ….. Agriculture.
Green party – create credit unions. Citizens empowerment fund (US$1Bn from marijuana funds). Funds to use to empower youths
FDD – Farming is more than agric. Root cause of our problems is the CONSTITUTION. (got a bit lost in her long debate)
UPND – VA is important and supported for job creation in UPND. Why sell raw nuts to SA and import finish products. Right marketing is correct and storage is correct…believe in efficiency. efficiency is the mark of the UPND which we want to bring into leadership.
NAREP – 80% fish consumed in Zambia comes from abroad. No fish farming in LP. Our ancestors were cleverer than our current leaders. talked about farming and fishing along the Zambezi riverin the older days in WP. Concludes we are missing quality leader

    • HH was on to something here, but it has not come out clearly unfortunately. Marketing and storage are not the only things here, how do you create value addition in agric? improving the quality of the product, investing in better methods of managing post harvest losses, improving linkages of various players in the value chain system.. etc.. Hey, even Green Party had a point about access to afforable finance (credit union), the rest have not said anything tangible.

    • May have missed out on some points but all in all, it’s about the right marketing of the agric produce and proper storage. Factories to create end products i.e. roasted nuts – create jobs.

  22. POST HARVEST LOSSES
UPND – familiar with agric. Post harvest losses doesn’t arise from bad produce from small scale farmer. Small Scale farmer is vulnerable to marketing
NAREP – Post harvest loses. FRA to be restructed.
FDD – Leakage of money in the various govt dept. Thefts Solution. we have made pipo believe the storage belongs to the govt. FRA shud not handle any stocks. FRA shud get commision for mktg maize in the region.
Green Party – think outside the box. Just cultivate for food for our country. Small scale farmers to be engaged in the “green” —– marijuana. The small scale farmers will benefit from the billion US$

    • Post Harvest Losses
UPND – Fair point about no linkage with bad produce. Small farmers are not only vulnerable to marketing their produce, they are vulnerable to low quality inputs, equipments and lack of access to finance. These need to be addressed. Also investments in agricultural technologies to improve post harvest production, improving functioning of organizations such as Zambia Agricultural Research Institute and NRDC to develop high yielding varieties of seeds for quality and quantity enhancement.

NAREP – Clearly do not have policy direction on Agr.

FDD – Post Harvest Loss is not equivalent to grain storage, argument is weak

Green Party – Appear to be high on their own supply

  23. Am worried for HH now. Its confirmed now that he is losing this election. To be endorsed by Munkombwe its a curse. History has it that who ever Munkombwe endorses loses, he endorsed Kaunda, kaunda lost, he endosed Rb, we all know what happened to Rb, he endorsed miles sampa its not a secrete we all know what happened. That’s why most govts only accept his endorsement after winning an election. But b4 election accept his endorsement at your own peril, he has bad mashamo !

  24. Health and education – critical issues

FDD – intertwined – child born in rural and urban shud have similar opportunites. Child born to poor parents have less chance of survival. Invest in education – enterprenuerships etc.
NAREP- health important. Mum died in a road accident and dad survived. Leadership is poor. Education is key in addressing a lot of issues. Health centre and schools are very far for children in rural areas. Curriculum is wrong. Children to have access to computers.
Green Party – we need to increase substantially money from marijuana. so, so, money will go to health. each district will have central hospitals. (dream on)
UPND – edu best investment, equalizer. Am best example. evry child in zambia shud access edu. edu breeds skills to run the country. upnd to support

    • Health and Education – Critical Issues

FDD – Its the most valid point but poorly delivered. The two are very much inter-linked. One can provide quality education but if people to be educated are not well enough to attend classes or even when they do attend, are not focused on what is being taught, then the system fails. Education is critical to fully exploiting potentials and creates opportunities for overall economic growth, whatever sector selected. Highly educated country is a highly informed one and would contribute to raising the standards of goverance and accountability in our social and political systems.

NAREP – Very disjointed argument although points raised are critical.

      Green Party – Still high

To be continued as I have run out of space

  25. Health and education

upnd to support the poor child. functional health systems. Doctor and nurses. Thats why we said we wud reinstated nurses.
MMD – edu is life equalizer. Am committed that MMD is going to provide mandatory edu from grade 1 – 12. Respect education. Even in SA it took a person who had studied law to liberate the blacks

    • Health and Education – Critical Issues

UPND – Made more of a political argument than a policy argument. Provide clear examples of how to address these issues, not done.

MMD – another political argument and little on how it will implement mandatory education from 1-12. How can it be enforced and what will it take?

Again, my feedback is only based on what is being written here, if more has been said well then… we will put it in another posting.

  26. Pretty thumbs up for keeping us updated.

I am glad this debate took place even without EL. Some voters have been enlightened and will be voting wisely.

More debates for 2016 Tripartite Elections.

Keep it up Zambia, this was dyonko!

  27. Please but Edith why did your wonderful success as a woman in politics – when you were very high up in Government – fail to fix any of Zambia’s problems? And what happened with the sometimes mentioned US $52 million via Zamtrop?
