The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) says the 17,000 rejected ballot papers in the just-ended presidential election were beyond the commission’s control.

ECZ Public Relation Manager, Cris Akufuna, said the commission did everything possible in educating the voters during the 30 days voter education exercise conducted in all the 1422 wards.

Mr Akufuna told ZANIS in an interview that the commission also engaged Nkhwazi Theatre group to educate voters through drama play and described the exercise as effective.

He was responding to a statement by the Foundation for Democratic Process (FODEP) that the voter education exercise was not effective because of the 17,000 rejected ballot papers.
And Mr Akufuna has called on political parties and civil society organisations to ensure that they actively participate in the voter education exercise.

  1. ECZ should also put the heads of competitors holizontally so that HH has upper hand in the next election. the way it is even any one who did not campain can get a lot of votes because his head is first.

  2. ECZ should also put the heads of competitors horizontally so that HH has upper hand in the next election. the way it is even any one who did not campain can get a lot of votes because his head is first.

  3. Oh golly why can’t Afrikans just accept the result of an election. Matter of fact there is now voter fatigue in the country because of the incessant bye-elections from even silly reasons for defection. We need to make it accountable for defectors by doing away with defections and allowing only one general election at a time. This and enfranchising every Zambian wherever they are are what will level the field. Then after that we can begin to debate coherently.

  4. ECZ are incompetent. Instead of voter education, they spend all effort on rigging. They don’t accept responsibility for anything. Even rigging, they want to share the blame with monitors.

  5. some people were lack to have the ability to spoil the votes. Ask the police officers who were sent to various parts of the country for duty in poling stations. They were denied chance to cast A VOTE. reason! maybe they could have voted otherwise.

  6. I have an excellent idea on how to conduct FREE and FAIR elections in africa. Voters should make a queue behind a photograph of the preferred candidate and ECZ makes a head count or they can make use a cattle dipping pen with voters going in one direction only, while ECZ officials make a head count! No spoilt votes! No ghost voters, no stuffed ballots, no printing of ballot papers. Even Edgar Lungu was voted by show of hands. HH can provide the cattle dipping pens!

    • This is not even humorous ….what I know is that all government ministries and agencies are corrupt in Zambia. So I get surprised when people say ECZ is unblemished…the only one! Does not make sense.

  7. Put clear pictures of candidates. Hhs head was the biggest n colors on party symbols were not clear except for red and yellow for hh
