The opposition MMD has with immediate effect expelled 18 members of its National Executive Committee (NEC) for gross misconduct.
Amongst these senior party leaders include Members of Parliament such as Kabinga Pande who is also party national chairperson, Situmbeko Musokotwane, Felix Mutati, Kenneth Chipungu, Kapembwa Simbao and Faustina Sinyangwe.

Other notable ones are Muhabi Lungu and Cheembe Nyangu who previously respectively held the positions of MMD National Secretary and Deputy National Secretary before their suspension.

Speaking this evening at a media briefing held in Lusaka party National Secretary Mwansa Mbulakulima disclosed that the decision to expel the 18 party members has been arrived at after a debate in a NEC meeting that was attended by more forty members on Saturday morning.

Mr. Mbulakulima has told journalist that the NEC was chaired by party President Nevers Mumba and that the gross miss conduct that has led to the said expulsion of the 18 party members relates their working against the party during the January 20th presidential election.

He says the same NEC meeting has also voted to ratify and elect him as the substantive MMD National Secretary to be deputized by Winnie Zaloumis.

Mr. Mbulakulima has further disclosed that the NEC meeting has also ratified the appointment of Elizabeth Chitika as the new party National Treasurer with Raphael Nakachinda becoming the new party spokesperson.

He says others who have been elected and whose election has been ratified are Bowman Lusambo who is now the new National Youth Secretary, while Christy Ntalasha is the new Chairperson for Art and Culture with Lengwe Bwalya being given the position of National Youth Treasurer.

The MMD national Secretary adds that the same NEC has also resolved to constitute a Disciplinary Committee to deal with specific cases of MMD leaders at various levels who were working against the party during the January 20th presidential election.

He notes that Disciplinary Committee which is to be chaired by NEC member Dr. Peter Machunga has members that include Emmanuel Chihili, Georgina Mutale, Lengwe Bwalya, Lisa Passi and Joyce Maliti.

And Mr. Mbulakulima has expressed his party’s readiness to participate in Parliamentary by-elections owing to the expulsion of some of its Members of Parliament that have been expelled on account of gross misconduct of working against their party in the just ended presidential election.

He has however explained that it is not the wish of his party’s leadership to subject the country to another costly venture of holding by-election following the said expulsion of some of its members of Parliament but that it was necessary for the party to expel the 18 party members.

Mr. Mbulakulima has also warned that the MMD might take drastic action against former President Rupiah Banda if he continues working against his own party in the manner he did during the presidential election which saw ruling PF emerging victorious.

    • imwe i have always wanted to ask , who is that coloured/ mixed race woman who is ever at Mumba ‘s side?
Its like HH and Maureen ,phone na simcard.

Every opposition leader has aside plate.

The end of MMD is now.

    • There we go. Now we should be having by-elections with just over a year to General elections and not even 2 week after presidential elections. This is nonsense

    • Why Ruphia Banda and his son not fired?
And that Ruphia Banda need sued for using MMD and its symbol during PF’s campaigns and inauguration.

    • Fake! They should have expelled Rupiah Banda first if they were serious and not just politicking. He is the one who brought the whole confusion. The Mutatis and others just went ahead with Nevers’ plan to support UPND. Nevers initially was going to back HH for the presidency.

    • Sad isn’t it? To think that MMD was the party that was voted out in 2011. Their numbers have dwindled due to poor leadership and personal agendas rather that whole party agendas. MMD is finished and Nevers Mumba should just pack his bags and go back to preaching. He is no leader and has also to a small extend contributed to the demise of this party. Expelling the MPs sadly will just bury the party. Has he tried reconciliation?

    • Sad that we are witnessing the end of MMD. Nevers, you are in deep end of the poor and chances of coming out are truly slim.

    • MMD is finished. It will strengthen PF. Come 2016, depending upon, how much funding Rainbow gets from traditional financiers of elections and the coverage Post Newspaper gives to it, 2016 might be a battle between PF and Rainbow Party.

    • FEEL SORRY FOR THIS MMD ,PLEASE BA NEVESRS EVEN A DOG CAN SEE THAT THIS PARTY NO MATTER WHAT ITS DEAD ,DEAD WITH MAGGOTS ABOUT TO START.
MOVE ON NEVERS MUMBA .NO ONE WILL EVER EVER VOTE FOR MMD JUST THE WAY PF WILL BE A DEFUNCT PARTY AFTER 2016 WHEN WYNTER OR HH TAKES OVER AND THERES A MIGHTY PARTY FOR MILES COMING SOONER THAN LATER.

    • Death of MMD is a well planned strategy of the Cartel. Rainbow party will benefit from the demise of MMD and strengthening of tribal tag of UPND. 2016 will be a battle between PF and RBP.

  1. Allow dialogue Dr. Mumba firing is not always the solution. I know every need loyalty members but its earned not forced.

    • I wanted to say everyone need royal members. You may have the constitutional powers, use them to build the party and not to tear it down.

    • This is the problem with Dr Mumba. He thinks by firing the MPs he has resolved the problems in MMD. He hasn’t. In fact the problem becomes more complex. His power base is weak and he is unpopular. Has RB been fired too! Stop flogging a dead horse. Why can’t NEC agree to remove Mumba?

    • When common sense ceases to be common.

What good will come from these expulsions other than ensure the demise of the MMD and a huge cost to the nation.

    • #Moyes ,I have noted with dismay that all your comments are anti UPND even when the discussion at hand does not involve the Party.
Without a shadow of doubt you are a Northerner.
UPND at the moment is the most organized and stable party with a clear policy on how to empower Zambians economically and take the country out of the doldrums.
One day UPND will rule Zambia. No kingdom lasts forever and so PF will not rule forever.

  2. This is a hard stance ba Mumba and team. But judging by the performance of the party in the by-election, I think it is a positive one, you have nothing to lose. Let them prove you wrong where necessary.

Some MMD MP’s de-campaigned their own party, how do you come back from that? Leaders have to make tough decisions, this one is def a hard line, but I think our leaders need discipline. Too much political prostitution. We need leaders that can make tough and principled decisions. We are to soft with diabolical characters, that’s why the slip through the cracks and we end up with surprise presidents.

  3. ….we have heard of such situations before…..tomorrow it will be injunction after injunction…until 2016……..they should have just said…..the 18 are suspended including RB till further notice and then do not just adopt them in 2016 period……

    • @ 7 Sucritinizerer for sure thts how it will be there is no way we can ve other By-Elections again. MMD is dead.

  4. Thanks you Dr. Mumba. Now onus is on HH and Lungu, please eject the muselela kwakaba’s, violent, opportunists. and give us credible people to pick from. The quality of leadership is questionable, Munk ombre has fired himself already. Abena Zambia let’s pick our leaders wisely.

  5. And they knelt down to put the death knell into the coffin. Why into the coffin that which carries the dead? Those standing by asked. We want to make sure the dead are killed and do not return as ghosts in 2016 or 2021 the leader of the suicide gang replied. “Ha ha ha ha! ” laughed Major Ka ching we “I told you you would nt survive without me” To be continued. ..

  6. That’s the only option available.Thank you Dr Mumba for the quick move. MMD needs renewal, it’s a great party yet it’s been consumed internally by own MPs and leaders the last 3yrs.
Going forward, the party must demand discipline and commitment and I’m so glad Dr Muchungwa takes care of that. Let’s have newMPs to reenergise the the party. Will bounce back.

  7. My biggest surprise of the decade is seeing this Kabinga Panda demanding to be considered a member of NEC which he qualifies as NEC before the presidential by-election. How dull can you be hig man. MMD was raped, ransacked, defiled and beaten by its own MPs and former president. That is you. The skeleton that went through the polls & came out humiliated on the other side know who their real friends are. It is NOT the 18. So Mr Panda et al, leave Nevers’ team to rebrand without you the party mecenaries!

  8. The end of MMD! It was nice while you ruled, but you will lose 18 MPs and become the smallest party in Parliament. Mumba did worse than Chanda of 4R in some constituencies last week. Mumba dues not inspire confidence in his leadership. MMD will join UNIP in the rubbish heap of history.

  9. The end of MMD, it was better to suspend them than causing another by elections in the country which are expensive. Why wa nevers doing that its not good.

  10. I am surprised that RB and Dora are not affected by the (re)action of the MMD NEC. It is on record that these two heavily campaigned for Lungu, and used the MMD symbol. MMD NEC be fair.

  11. fire the entire membership of mmd. the mmd structures in all provinces of zambia have drifted to upnd. dissolve all party organs from branch to pec and we shall commend you nevers as the greatest leader mmd has ever churned out! dont be a coward pastor nevers, just do it! and now.. i am right to say nevers has “never” added any value to mmd, just like rupiah banda and his cronies. both cherish to see mmd nailed in the coffin..abash!

  12. Funny thing is that none of these people ie Mumba, Kabinga etc are MMD members- They abandoned their parties such as Unip to come and edstroy MMD

  13. MMD has served it’s purpose and Mumba should be ashamed of clinging on to a party that gave his political career a second chance. He should look himself in the mirror and ask why the Zambian people can not relate with him. I would urge the expelled members to rebrand themselves and come up with a party that will stand the test of time. Mumba is a stubborn and dishonest man. It’s not the NEC members who relegated you to fourth position but the people of this great nation Zambia.

  14. Can the church please move in reconcile these people? We wish the remaining one and half years to be devoid of by – elections so that we concentrate on new constitution then after that parties can reconfigure themselves for the 2016 Presidential and General elections under a new constitution!

    • Judiciary should not grant any by-elections even those useless Councillors who relinquished their positions in northern province should wait until 2016 tr-apatite elections.

We do not have time and resources to waste on fake by-elections born out of lack of wisdom.

  15. Doctor Mumba is delusional. That was the last decision he was suppose to have made.He has now killed representation in parliament.Man of God without wisdom.

Does he even know the adverse effects of his decision, guess he needs deliverance how could it be that anything he associates with crumbles.

  16. Why have you not expelled RB as well since all the other members who supported other candidates have been expelled. what reasons did RB give which other members didn’t give for them to be expelled

  17. The all of the secretariat staff not even the office orderly voted for ba Nevers Mumba .ba Nevers you are just destroying MMD.please leave Mmd alone and just go back to victory ministry let someone take over and reconcile the membership

  18. Mumba doesn’t seem to understand the implications of this decision! First, it means bye elections and second, it buries his own party and third, in any case, by the time the court process concludes, its time for 2016 elections

  19. Too bad the likes of Muhabi Lungu risk going into political extinction while the likes of Chipungu,Situmbeko,Pande etc they can return their seats with easy in the UPND ticket in case of bye-elections

  20. This is a classic example of lack of foresight.

You know your Party’s core vision is now in the past, hence you are no longer a strong contender by a mile. You know your predecessor RB has caused irreversible damage to your Party by his ill-conceived failed comeback. You know the only hope you have to go forward is to be proactive and team up with other Parties or face extinction.

Now, in spite of that knowledge, you still go ahead a shoot yourself in the foot by expelling your key members who are pro-active?

    Absolutely unbelievable! …….R.I.P MMD.

  21. in such circumstances a serious decision has to be taken. do you think these mps will find it easy to decampaign the parties they endorsed on 20th, how possible will that be? thumbs up to nevers mumba. an old stock can still be rebranded and look new, some applies to mmd. as for rupiah something has to be done to discipline him
