The opposition Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) has called on the civil society in the country to be consistent in the way they offer advise to political parties in the country.

Commenting on calls by FODEP for the former ruling party to rescind its decision to expel its Members of Parliament who supported PF and UPND in the just ended Presidential elections MMD communication director and special assistant to party president Raphael Nakacinda said the civil society is not only their to offer checks and balances to the party in government but should also check on the conduct of those in opposition as well.

Mr. Nakacinda noted that FODEP should have advised the MPs on how to conduct themselves instead of offering their advise after the party has taken action on the MPs.

He further explained that the party does not wish to create unnecessary by- elections but the actions was necessary so as to restore order in the former ruling party.

“It has never been the wish of the MMD to create unnecessary by-elections but FODEP was quite when these members were crossing the flow. They seemed to be enjoying the drummer without even providing some kind of guidance on how MPs belonging to political parties should conduct themselves.

“I think that civil societies are also expected to be consistent in what they comment on, they are not only there to provide checks and balance on the party in government but even the behavior and conduct of politicians in the opposition.

When a politician does something immoral, continued, Mr. Nakacinda, it is expected that the civil society also condemns such actions.”

And on the calls by the expelled members for Dr. Mumba to call for a NEC meeting to discuss their expulsion Mr. Nakacinda said the party and the president will only entertain members whose intentions are honorable and not those with ill intentions of taking the party’s name in to disrupt.

  1. NAKACHINDA IS VERY CORRECT. WHEN THE MMD MPs DECIDED TO SUPPORT ESSPECIALLY UPND BEFORE SUPPORTING PF THE CIVIL SOCIETY WAS QUITE, WHY DID THEY NOT VOICE OUT/ IT IS WELL KNOWN THAT FODEP AND OTHER KNOWN NGOs WERE COMFORTABLE BECAUSE ALL THEY WANTED WAS UPND TO WIN BUT NOW THAT THEIR WISH IS FUTILE THEY NOW WISH TO ADVISE MMD. JUST EXPEL THEM SO THAT WE HAVE DECENCY IN POLITICS. CHIBA. LSK.

  2. Mr. Nakachinda you are on firm ground there, these people wronged out party by supporting our opponents and these guys were quite, we expel them they start talking it better to have two MPs who are loyal than 100 who are disloyal!!!

  3. There must be discipline in these political parties. Honestly, if your father is a boxer you don’t expect your children to support your opponent. I hope the courts wont entertain the rebels.

  4. The MMD is burying its head in the sand at its own peril. The message that is being sent by the MMD MPs, the electorate and others is simply that they do not believe that Dr. Nevers Mumba has the competences to lead this country, notwithstanding the fact that he may have emerged victorious at the MMD convention. How is Nakacinda interpreting the extremely poor performance of MMD during the just ended election? Truth be told, many of us who used to support MMD stopped the time Dr Mumba became president of the party because we do not see any competences in him to take this country anywhere. If we were talking about preaching our way into economic development, may be yes. But bwana we are talking hard core competences in monetary policy and fiscal policy. Dr. Mumba has none of these! So?

  5. But the news maker’s name is immoral. How can you be called “Naka…” Nakacita cani? Lol.

It is like ZNBC employee Sarah Macende.
