PF Secretary General Davies Chama has lashed out at UPND Deputy Spokesman Cornelius Mweetwa’s accusations that former President Rupiah Banda is controlling President Edgar Lungu.
In a statement, Mr Chama said Mr Mweetwa’s accusations published in the Post Sunday are absurd and disrespectful to President Lungu and Mr Banda.
Mr Chama said it is disrespectful to suggest that President Lungu cannot make his own decisions when he has made some of best decisions since he assumed office after thumping UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema in a free and fair election.
Below is Mr Chama’s full statement.
STATEMENT ISSUED BY MR DAVIES CHAMA, SECRETARY GENERAL OF THE PF IN RESPONSE TO UPND ACCUSATIONS ON PRESIDENT EDGAR LUNGU AND MR RUPIAH BANDA
8th Feb. 2015, Mfuwe—we have noted with sadness that the UPND has lamentably failed to heal from the January 20 loss of elections of their leader Hakainde Hichilema to President Edgar Chagwa Lungu.
We have noted with even deeper sadness that, in collusion with a tabloid and some on-line publication, the UPND has doubled its dosage of hate and envy against President Lungu as they attempt to distract him from executing national duties.
Of specific note is the absurd and disrespectful remarks by their out spoken talking head Cornelius Mwetwa who after running out of names to call President Lungu is quoted in a tabloid saying our President, who by the way is the President of this great nation is being controlled by former President Rupiah Banda.
It is not only disrespectful to suggest that the Head of State popularly elected by the great people of Zambia cannot make his own decisions when he has made some of best decisions since he assumed office after thumping Mwetwa’s leader Hichilema in a free and fair election.
President Lungu has released the draft constitution and given a road map without anyone’s help.
President Lungu has appointed the first female vice President, a female Chief Justice and a female Commerce and Trade Minister without anyone’s help.
To therefore continue suggesting that he is being ‘tutored’ by external characters is comptemptuous and cheap.
We know that after being thumped four times, the pain and the bitterness in Mwetwa and his leader hearts is almost incurable deep-rooted. It is almost palpable.
We know that it will even be more painful and bitter when President Lungu thumps Hichilema for the fifth time. Mwetwa should brace for the inevitable.
President Lungu is a good man, he is an intelligent man and he is a man the great Zambian people have chosen to lead them.
We believe he deserves the respect of a leader and not the contempt and hate being spewed by Mwetwa and replayed in some tabloids with agenda’s of promoting hate.
Our advice to Mwetwa and his hate speech media allies is that they should go back to the drawing board and reflect on their relevance as an opposition party—do they want to play a complimentary role in developing the nation or they want to continue on a path of hate, envy and jealous?
Either way, President Lungu will concentrate on consensus and national building.
Let me end by citing Nelson Mandela who said, “Resentment is like drinking poison and hoping that it will kill your enemy.”
Mwetwa must grow up and exercise maximum restraint from being used as a peddler of hate speech by people with an agenda, a hate agenda.
The election is over Hichilema lost and HE Lungu won.
Mwetwa and UPND have to live with it.
Ours as a ruling party under President Lungu is a huge task and its task we take seriously. It is task of reducing poverty and creating jobs.

about RB calling shots was an issue PF itself had discussed. It appeared on a certain online site. Mr. Simuusa and Mr. Chama had expressed their concerns about EL and RB. Mr Simuusa even said “I do not know what was agreed between the two and I doubt if anyone does. There is fear that he (Banda) has proposed his own Cabinet and the like, but to the best of my knowledge, nobody really knows what the agreement is. We read of the trip to Nigeria and so on, but we do not know”. And Chama said it would be wrong for Banda, who had earned himself a good pension, to go for a lower position than the one he held before.

When a country is having people of Davis caliber in authority, just know that true or meaningful development is far. I think having “INFLUENCE” and “CONTROLLING” somebody are two different things. Even you @ndobo or @Mushota can have “influence” on the president if you wanted to and had the means to do so—i.e., having ready ACCESS to the president such as the one RB has.
Even Mweetwa can exert some influence on the decisions the president makes if he wasn’t such a petty and let down of an MP. The problem with us Zambians generally is that we lack analytical skills. There is nothing for free in this world. RB invested so heavily in Lungu’s campaign and at the same time he has pending court issues and stripped of immunity therefore is it not common sense that these issues are on the table. This RB Lungu alliance stinks and slaps the Sata legacy in the face. Scratch my back and I will scratch yours. Its as simple as that.

It is very clear Lungu needed time to come up with balanced cabinet when you look at what most senior PF members did to him. They showed they were working with Scott to make EL lose the election. They went to Mulungushi but ran away leaving EL un-opposed. Lungu had be confirmed by acclamation which actually is legal under those circumstances. But all they wanted was to humiliate him despite the fact the whole country was behind him.
After elections, it became clear that uniting the country was necessary and to come up with a balanced cabinet was the way forward. You also need to understand that the success rate in achieving one’s vision does not necessarily depend on how nice and well-polished the vision is, but mostly on its implementation which is a function of the strategy used. watch out for Lungu as he implements Sata’s vision using his (Lungu’s) strategy.
The Opposition should not be annoyed when Lungu implements great programs for the nation; yes he will reduce on their campaign items but they need to be happy because that is what they also want to achieve – i.e. develop this country.

When I was young I was being told that simple minds discuss people while great ones discuss ideas. Let us discuss ideas forget about UPND and or PF now. Talk about how we will get better as Zambia. If we have nothing to talk about let us not waste time discussing people. In nyanja they say chaona munzako chapita, mu maba chili pali iwe. The current Government comprises of all parties PF, UPND and all. Therefore, Mr Chama and everybody else and with due respect, please focus on the development of the nation rather than teasing people. We all know that where there are winners for sure there will be losers. Therefore some will be happy while the others will be bitter. Why should time be waisted on discussing this? Please consider my suggestion Mr. Chama. I know you are mature and wise.
