UPND President Hakainde Hichilema
UPND President Hakainde Hichilema

Fellow Zambians, especially us politicians, lets stop dividing our peaceful and united people for the sake of our selfish political benefits, government appointments and contracts.

It is unacceptable to always resort to undesirable labels such as ethnicity against our opponents each time we lose an argument in the political debate arena.Poverty and hunger as a result of a badly managed economy does not choose one’s origins. It affects all of us equally.

One issue that we dealt with on our Radio Phoenix programme yesterday was that of the voting pattern in the just ended election. For the record and for the sake of those that missed the programme, I thought it is important we put this matter into context though, I know for malicious reasons, others will still keep bringing it up.

Records are there for all to see that in the 2011 presidential and general election, we in UPND were getting zero votes in three quarters of the polling stations in Luapula, Northern (then combined with now Muchinga), and Eastern provinces.

Poverty and hunger as a result of a badly managed economy does not choose one’s origins. It affects all of us equally.

In all our postmortem meetings after the 2011 elections, we clearly realized our mistake of not having put enough effort in terms of selling ourselves in those areas. But at no time did we demonise anybody from those regions as being tribalists for not voting for us.

All well-meaning Zambians who care to remember will recall that we started putting a lot of our energies in those areas even when we faced brutality at the hands of those who felt we should not disturb what they labeled their strongholds. Many will remember how we were brutally hounded out of Eastern Province by the police barely one week in the area even when we had permits for one month.

You will remember how we were chased from meeting then Chitimukulu elect in Northern province, that even the police could not help us.You will remember how we were almost assassinated at Ndola’s Sun FM studios on the Copperbelt where we had to pass through rooftops to escape. But, in all instances, instead of resorting to undesirable labels against our people, we kept going there, because we truly believed our good people in those areas had been told a lot of undesirable messages on what we stand for.

In the just ended 2015 elections, we deliberately devoted three quarters of our time and resources in Eastern, Muchinga, Northern, Copperbelt and Luapula Provinces visiting almost all the constituencies so that our people could genuinely interact and understand us.

It therefore defeats the spirit of ‘One Zambia, One nation, One People that we genuinely believe in for someone to demonise our people in those regions (Copperbelt, Northern, Luapula, Copperbelt, Eastern Provinces) that voted for us this time around and label them as traitors for believing in our messages.

Besides, these are our brothers and sisters in these areas who even today, some have probably not been paid their money for farming, majority have failed to plant this season, they have failed to send their children to schools, they can hardly afford basic necessities because of the high cost of living, yet they were still expected to vote in a particular manner.

As a solid UPND team, we may have our own shortcomings, but we had and truly believe we still have superior messages and better solutions for our country. It is also a fact that our main competitors never campaigned in certain regions, yet the people in those areas were still expected to vote for them.

And based on our postmortem and lessons for the 2015 elections, we are again embarking on the same journey of thanking and uniting our people all over the country as we amplify our messages.

God Bless you all and have a wonderful day

Hakainde Hichilema

    • You have deliberately and for political expediency the voting pattern of southern, western and north western provinces for the past 15yrs. Why?

You can’t call for national unity without publicly denouncing your evil tribal politics that has shaped upnd after the demise of mazoka.

You are a shameless opportunist without any well meaning agenda for Zambia.

Come next year your will be back in you comfortable margins of around 19%as you clock your first term in loses..

Denounce your tribal and regional politics first before calling for national unity. We are an intelligent people and won’t be manipulated by selfish and parochial ambitions

    • Mushota is quite right. Politics in Zambia is not for the straight but for the crooked. If you want to go into government to stop corruption and develop the nation, you will have very little support. If you stand for corruption, then the masses will support you as they receive some hand-outs here and there. They are used to poverty and can’t stand prudent management of national affairs and real development. They hate the truth and love lies.

    • The issue of the fear of a Tonga President is very funny indeed. I asked a good Bemba friend of mine who happens to be well-educated with BEng, MSc, MBA and ACCA and is Director at a big RSA organisation about the Bemba fear of a Tonga president. Being so educated and exposed, I was expecting him to say that the tribal tug is a political tool used by Bembas to alienate Tonga presidential candidates so that they continue having a Bemba related president who will give more opportunities (business, employment etc) to Bembas. I was expecting him to say, “that is politics and that is why they say it is a dirty game”. Given that the majority voters are illiterate or semi-literate and poverty stricken, they are manipulated to believe this fact and deny Zambia real leadership in other tribes. The…

    • The gentleman said ifintu ni Lungu. I asked him what is ifintu ni Lungu? He couldn’t even give me a reasonable argument why Lungu was the right man but continued saying Tongas are tribalists who would rule to the exclusion of other tribes if given a chance. I said to him go to Zambian High Commission in Pretoria and see which tribe is majority. Then go to Belgium, New York, London, Tokyo, Moscow, Paris, everywhere around the world and you will find the same ratios of tribes in embassies and high commissions. Look at the cabinet, parastatals, civil service etc. it is the same. To him Sata was there to unite the nation and blah blah blah blah he went on.

Tongas are very tribal, don’t love other tribes, always want to employ only Tongas, always want to enrol only or majority Tongas in Institutions of learning where Principal or Adminstration is Tonga etc.

They know very well that their only hope is HH and yet you see them voting for someone else. Looks like they are so used to poverty and backwardness…..”

    • Well spoken indeed. But an important question still begs an answer: why is it that in SP in general and Gwembe in particular, there is witch-hunter for the few who’re suspected to have voted for ‘other than HH’? I’ve always said that for you HH, you might not have a problem and I don’t see any. But your people are the problem – Tongas feel that they own you. They were already saying, “this is the time for a Tonga to rule”. My dear HH, as long as this spirit continues, you won’t execute your beautiful ideas. We don’t want a Tonga or any tribal hegemony. We want a national party. And by the way, why do you have this trick of having two deputies? Is it not to have an heir apparent? Remember that trick saw you ascend to presidency at the expense of the two vice presidents at the time.

I like the part where he says poverty knows no party cadre. It affects us all irrespective of which party we belong to.

Who is not affecfed by the fall of the kwacha? Who is not affected by the high cost of living?

With PF in power its gonna get worse.

Some silly and lazy PF thinkers will just dismiss the kwacha’s fall as a global trend.

I challenge those attributing the kwacha fall to the global trend to critically think of the reasons why the dollar and the pound keep appreciating. Then go back ask themselves why PF is not doing what USA or UK doing to make the kwacha remain stronger.

The only thing I can say is that the Zambian economy is performing badly because of clueless PF in power and…

Clearly,it is Dipak who is disturbed by Munkombwe’s (tribal)statements and not Hakainde himself.Anyway,Dipak is in the company of people whose political DNA he does not really understand.By denouncing Munkombwe,Dipak thought he was doing the right thing when he was actually offending the people he is helping to campaign and win an election.

HH is said to be wealthy, or perhaps “stinking rich” by zambian standards, how much help does he render to the poorest of the poor even in the area he hails from? Go to Kabompo and ask the help Kavindele renders to his people. take a trip to kasama and ask about GBM’s help in the area…….. the list endless, but ask HH, he will only improve the livelihood of the poor when he goes to state house. What a fallacy!

am sure you felt very bad to see mukombwe say those tribal things am a tonga I felt bad too.but did you listen to what Elizabeth chitika molobeka said at a rally addressed by nevers mumba? It was bad and tribal against tongas and yet you don’t bring it out and condemn ,why? because she is bemba. You are quick to condemn a tongas tribalist and remain mute on bemba tribalists. This is not fair and you feel because you bembas appear to be many you will continue blocking any Tonga who wants to be president of this country? one thing am sure of is that your schemes to blog Tongas will fail you one day becos we will continue embracing other tribes who don’t buy your cheap political hegemony against tongas.

      Saki refuses to rejoin UPND
      • By Lambwe Kachali
      Thursday June 19, 2008 [04:00]
UNITED Liberal Party (ULP) president Sakwiba Sikota yesterday said UPND president Hakainde Hichilema is not honest in his offer of reconciliation because he has failed to deal with tribalism in the party. Responding to Hichilema who on Tuesday invited him to rejoin UPND in the spirit of national unity and development, Sikota said Hichilema’s offer to the leadership and membership of ULP to rejoin UPND was not genuine and was laced with thorny issues.
Sikota accused Hichilema of playing to the gallery by…

    • There’s no wrong voting. Voting’s subjective. Everywhere, we vote with the heart rather than rationality and it’s to irrationality that politicians must appeal to to win votes. Remember… “within 90 days…..”
The good thing is that EL is proving to be a good, self-less leader. Of course you’ll never agree with this although you see and hear it. For a long time, one can’t tell the origin of the President from the names of Ministers – Cabinet is well balanced.

    • In Zambia, it is not the right person who wins. It is the one who gives the most lies. Zambian politics is not for development but for the nourishment of the elite, by manipulating the illiterate.
      1. Sata won the elections due to the ignorant illitetrate youths. They elated but yet the economy dropped to worst levels.
      2. Some are saying God anointed Lungu to rule, i want to say God did not anoint Lungu, but allowed whatever happened to happen. Allowing something to happen is not endorsing or anointing it to happen. He knows that some day we are going to open our eyes and see the real tuth.
      3. Some individuals will go to any lengths to paint others tribal, yet will never srcutinise themselves at all. That is why the so-called clever ones are laughing today.
      God is watching for sure..

  4. The message is true. We have demonised certain groups of people as being tribe even when the pattern of voting has been the same in against them in other regions of the country.

Edgar Lungu beat H.H by far in eastern province and Edgar is from Eastern Province but to our friends they will say this is not tribe. Most of the M.P.S. who supported Edgar in 2015 elections where from Northern, Muchinga and Luapula and Edgar beat HH in these provinces by far and the interpreters will still say this is not tribe voting.

Mazoka could not win the elections because Nothern and Luapula Prov by then rejected him when most of other provinces voted for him. To our friends that is not tribe. Let us be fair the way we judge others. Judge not that you will also be judged. One Zambia One Nation.

    • You know very well and do we have to repeat that, in the provinces you are referring to like LP, NP, MP, EP etc EL did not get 99.9% of the votes as HH did in SP. In these provinces HH got reasonable votes in spite of the fact that he does not come from there. HOWEVER it was not so in SP.

You aught to be ashamed of yo tribalism. Its so plain for everyone to see and you want to make us believe otherwise, we are not as dumb as yu are.

      You are finished in 2016

    • My neighbours watch me work hard weeding my maize field, while they enjoy their rest. When my crop is ready they are angry why their crop failed. Kwame, why do politicians campaign? Do you think the electorate will vote for you when you don’t present yourself to them? I know you were impressed with the UPND campaigns and the results they yielded though you will not publicly declare it. UPND went to the people, that’s why HH got those votes despite the serious open tribal campaigns the people of LP, NP, MP and EP wedged. You know this very well. Why do you continue denying your conscience in this manner? There is no need to be so unreasonable in your interpretation of reality!

You are right, UPND need an active SG, the sooner they realize this the better. Actually the Deputy SG is even more active, maybe they should consider someone like Maureen Mwanawasa or Mucheleka i see a lot of maturity in them. Mucheleka to me is a real son of this country.

    • Shakafuswa is just like Chama, full of smelly hot air, always confrontational for nothing. UPND needs more friendly warm cadres who the ordinary man will relate to, those who will fight for the country and not against PF and PF personalities. UPND needs to be the voice for the well meaning peaceful Zambians, not the voice for the disgruntled hyenas who have been side-lined by other hyenas. Not the voice for those who see an opportunity to rape the wealth of the country at the expense of the poor. UPND should kill the image of just fighting for their own bantu botatwe. UPND should emerge as the best choice and not the other alternative in the race.

And HH stop being a crybaby khoumuna and show maturity, endear yourself to Zambia, Banene atuhambane chiidi chamana 2016 ilya hwahy

  8. Despite his difficulties Muhabi can make a good SG for UPND. Ba Chibwe is not suitable even if its about tribal balancing. Equally Dr Canisius Banda and ba Mutale Nalumango bring nothing to the table. UPND surely need some changes including the choice of colors. Red is repulsive. HH and UPND should distance themselves from the hate speech of ZWD who appear to be their propaganda vehicle. ZWD does cost them votes including mine. These are my honest views.

  9. Politicians especially the President must not say anything that confirms to the people that there is tribalism in the nation. This calls for wisdom. It is unfortunate for the President of the nation to confirm that tribalism is rife in our country just because of elections. The president is the custodian of peace in our nation and must have all the wisdom when it comes to such situations. The President must seek advice before saying anything that might lead to aggravating a situation. So all of you that call yourselves Presidents for political parties must be careful what you say. Do not just say things that suite you at a particular time such as tribalism, rigging and other similar utterances. I suggest that you pray for wisdom. You all need to wise up. Foolishness destroys easily.

    • @mpooma, your contribution made a lot of sense, infact we should upgrade tribal outbursts to a crime level regardless who champions them. In kaunda days to talk about barotse was a big crime hence the quiet we enjoyed, now democracy came with Chiluba he’ll brook loose. Africans should always be gguided by deliberate rules…

  11. Yes, well spoken but remember it is not only not campaigning in certain areas but the unwelcome atmosphere that kept campaigners way from certain regions. Unless Politicians stopped influencing people to vote in a particular way then we will have it better. We work in institutions where we see ethnic groupings commonly and openly agreeing to vote for their own regardless. If the likes of Munkombwe speech in campaigns is to go by, what do one expect? See the resultant in Northern Province where Maureen was visibly seen digging heels at cadre attack. Unless clearly and properly addressed we are likely to see the repeat in next elections because streets are saying until our own takes it and others are now saying we have learnt from our friends, no mistake again. What does that mean?

  12. But sir how did you manage to win only on MUVI TV with 84% of the votes cast by COSTA KAFUPI MWANSA instead of winning in the wards and constituencies. Elections can never be won on Muvi TV or Radio Phoenix . 2016 will even be worse for you because Edgar will have every resource at his disposal in the general election.

  13. The bembas and easterners call HH’s voters in SP;WP;NWP as tribalists whilst those who voted for pf from Luapula; Muchinga, Nothern and Eastern as their strongholds. This is clear that tribalists are PF and MMD. Tribalism is so rife and very high in Zambia and the promoters are the likes of RB; Siliya, Nevers Mumba; Kambwili; Kampyongo; Kalaba; Yaluma; Mwila davies; Sikazwe and their teams. Today Nevers and his extinct mmd are merging with pf not because of reasons to develop Zambia but simply tribal in order to block HH and UPND in 2016. Zambians wake up.

    • Zambia should use this depreciation to export more… the US economy is doing so well, Obama has significantly reduced USA’s dependence on imported oil, unemployment in the US is the lowest it has ever been, so the US$ will continue to be stronger, Chain’s manufacturing is tempering off, Europe is sluggish, … all nothing a third world country like Zambia can do nothing about but export more

HH you were seen to accommodate any one in your desperate attempt to rule this nation, you really got convinced of a win from self proclaimed drug and election rigging agents like jv,start your come back by advising your members you lost the elections square. your secret meeting with the litunga, your extravagant promises to Anglo American regarding the mines,& your money collection and tools from Asians, all those activities in kazangula & livingstone truly didn’t represent you well . stop being desperate and maimin, speeches that you don’t stand for. Remain offering checks & balances to the ruling party, with special monitoring of jv you will get exactly what you deserve in 2016,hope it will keep you quiet then.

  16. yOU HAVE SPOKEN WELL, BUT YOU ARE NOT THE ONLY ONE WHO HAS TRIED TO BRING THIS ISSUE TO THE FORE, ALOT OF WELL SCHOOLED PEOPLE HAVE GIVEN THEIR ANALYSIS BUT IT IS A PROBLEM WHEN YOU HAVE THE MAJORITY OF PEOPLE WHO DO NOT HAVE ANY RELATIONSHIP WITH READING CULTURE DUE TO THE SYSTEM THAT DELIBERATELY DENIES THEM PROPER EDUCATION SO THAT THEY CONTINUE LIVING IN THE WORLD OF DARKNESS. tHE WHITE MAN SAID, “IF YOU WANT TO HIDE ANYTHING FROM A BLACK PERSON, JUST PUT IT IN WRITTEN”. IF YOU WERE TO ASSESS THE LITERACY LEVELS PER PROVINCE THEN YOU WILL APPRECIATE WHAT IS BEING SAID. THERE SOME PROVINCE WITH VERY LOW LITERACY LEVELS, THIS IS WHERE YOU FIND A LOT OF PEOPLE WIELDING PANGAS AND SPOILED VOTERS’CARDS IN THE MAJORITY. IN SUCH PROVINCES PEOPLE STILL BELIEVE IN EARTHINIST, HENCE PANGAS.

You are being very basic in your thinking to wish that a leader who loses election by robbing must stay feeling bad with self pity. The truth is that the main losers are the majority poor Zambians and the general citizenry. It is clear by now to note that EL is struggling to manage govt because of his ineptitude. Sata’s life was taken because he could not stand the pressure that come with leadership!

  26. Unfortunately, regional voting will occur again in 2016 if what we hear on streets is anything to go by. UPND supporters are saying until HH becomes president they will continue voting for him. PF supporters were so sure Lungu would win that they did not strain themselves to vote. Now they are shocked and angry that PF had to struggle to beat UPND and are saying they will vote like UPND supporters in 2016. There will be no voter apathy in 2016!

  28. HH…And when Milupi says at a rally,Southern,Western and North Western let us unite and vote together and control Zambia for you that is national unity? When you as a party President wishing to rule a united country, you go to North Western Province and say,” the province is poor because PF too money to Muchinga to build Universities. I will come and build you universities” . For you that is national unit when barely a week you were duping people in Muchinga that you would complete building the Universities and other infrastructure that are in progress and you know very well that under development in NW started way before PF,PF is even reversing it? When Maureen and Munkombwe and Chiefs from your province declare that it was time for a Tonga to rule for you that it is national unity?

Himself with his ZWD are the pioneers and champions of tribalism, hate speech against other tribes. At the same time, he wants the same people to vote for him. In short he wants a vote from the people he or his tribe hates with passion. How is that possible. He is very dull

This was not his time yet. All Zambians are free to stand as Presidents no matter where they come from. We need to stamp out Politics of insults. I get so disgusted with people full of insults especially on the media. We need to clean up our website and get rid of people who keep insulting others. Just give advice and way forward and not everyone can be President. whoever wins wins and I know it is painful to lose so what life goes on you move on. HH has moved on well done Sir for your advice. 39. People as we post comments, I feel we need to be real also by providing a solution to our leaders than posting hate speeches. We may continue arguing, insulting and wishing while our relatives and families remain starving and some bloggers here remain without secure jobs. I wish LT and other Online media would be more proactive by posting to us the various manifesto of different political parties so that we articulate the contents and see how viable it is for one to attain the projected contents. I see a lot of labeling and defamation of characters, even pointing fingers to innocent people. I feel we can be more proactive by helping ourselves on how to solve the many challenges our families and country is going through. Let us bring developmental issue

  40. Okay. Does that mean a Northerner can now become UPND President?

HH opens his mouth, the wind blows in and a load of waffle comes out the other end. When UPND starts practicing total equality within their ranks they can cast a stone! He should be worrying about things closer to home rather than lecture us on how to vote.

  41. Our memories are still fresh when we recall how the Tonga top leadership hounded out Patrick Chisanga, Bob Sichinga and Sakwiba Sikota from the UPND. The pattern of voting in the recently held Presidential by-elections consolidated the exposure of Tonga’s deeply hidden political agenda.

We learn from the grape vine that some Tonga academics at Unza and CBU were plotting to influence HH’s (?incoming?) Govt to arbitrarily replace the top management CEOs of these two national institutions with Tongas (and their cousins) in disregard of legal procedures.

It appears then that Dr. C. Banda is merely being used in the same way as a black DA Parliamentary leader is being used by Hellen to promote privileges of the whites in South Africa. We learnt big lessons in the Jan 2015 elections.

  42. The US Dollar against ZKW you talk about is even better.for the past 4 or so months, the Russian Rouble has suffered from about 31 R per $1 to 62.40R per 1$ today!!almost all currencies world over are affected and only the US$ itself seem to be stable!!!So this is the world’s problem and not only Zambia’s!!!THE FACT IS THAT EVEN IF YOUR TRIBAL HH WON,THE KWACHA OR ECONOMY COULD HAVE STILL TRUGGLED!!!GLOBE ECONOMY HAS MUCH INFLUENCE ON WEAK ECONOMIES LIKE OURS!!!then over tribalism,HH and his supporters must be the last to talk about this issue bcoz tribalism is in their blood!!!SO YOU PEOPLE IN UPND MUST JUST BE READY FOR NEGA NEGA FORMULA IN FAVOUR OF PF!!!YOU STARTED IT(REGIONAL VOTING),SO U MUST LIVE WITH IT!!!! IT’LL BE NNF AT PLAY IN 2016!!!

But always remember “mother nature is the greatest equalizer”.

By the way some people who surrounded you have received their KARMA when you lost. God reminded them of what they themselves made others go through but it’s unfortunate you have to suffer thru’ the lesson. Our God, Jehovah, is merciful and hears the cries of the “oppressed” – God’s time is the best. May God protact and give you the much needed wisdom.

Tonga bull, we know that reading culture in Zambia is bad but it is unbelievable that after a lot of people have put the issue of privatization and HH to rest, you seem not to have read, seen or heard anything. You also seem to be highly illiterate for you to think HH is evil because of his riches. As stated earlier, various people have directed as to which documents to read in order to understand how privatization was handled. I do not know if there is still night school. If it is still there, enroll and get hold of those documents to set you free. You are a danger not only to yourself but people around you. 52. My good friends and family in UPND the only reason people Think UPND is a tribal party is because the people immediately below HH are for a lackvof a better term completely in a league much further down than the president. While I agree that HH represents some of the very best to come out of Southern Province, Zambia and Africa I don’t think I can say the same about the VP, SG and NC of the UPND. You see that is the problem. If you don’t agree try to choose from GBM, MUTATI, MANGANI, MILUPI, DORA, SAKI, NAWAKWI, GENERAL MIYANDA, KABINGA PANDE, NEVERS MUMBA as your number 2 and 3 from HH and see. Elections are won by big endorsements. Yes UPND campaigned a lot in Copperbelt, Luapula, Northern and Muchinga but it was endorsements of Maureen, GBM , Katele etc that won votes.

HH ANNOUNCED BEFORE ELECTIONS THAT HE HAD ALREADY WON AND THAT PF HAD STOLEN HIS VOTES EVEN BEFORE ELECTIONS WERE CONDUCTED. I LISTENED TO HIS INTERVIEW ON RADIO PHONIX AND I WAS SUPRISED THAT HE KEPT ON SAYING ECZ SWAPPED HIS VOTES AND GAVE SOME EXAMPLES EG KABOMPO AS A CASE IN HAND OF STEALING HIS VOTES BUT WHAT HE FORGOT WAS TO MENTION THAT IN CHINGOLA ECZ SWAPPED THE FIGURES IN HIS FAVIOUR AND WAS THIS ALSO STEALING? AFTER THE RELEASE OF THE 150 RESULTS IN THE PRESS, WE EXPECTED HIM TO PINPOINT CONSTIENCIES THEY STOLE FROM HIM BUT HE HAS BEEN MUTE MEANING THE RESULTS WERE CORRECT.
