HELP, Zambia is dying!

Health care for ordinary Zambians

In This Book Has No Title, Jarod Kintz induces an enigmatic syringe,

“In the land of Gibberish, the man who makes sense, the man who speaks clearly, clearly speaks nonsense.”

Zambia presently looks like a land where those who make sense, who speak clearly, clearly speak nonsense. And the truth is not very far away: In a space of ten years, the land has lost three presidents, has conducted two presidential bye-elections, and has elected two unfit-to-govern presidents! Meanwhile, the presidents are either dying or being flown out of the country to “one of the best medical facilities in the world.” And the irony is that the said best hospitals in the world fail us lamentably – they are notorious for handing us back dead heads of state!

The issue is not that the newly-elected president, Edgar Lungu, just collapsed (March 9th, 2015) and is evacuated to Milpark Hospital in South Africa, for all people fall sick from time to time and will eventually die. The problem, however, is that this is just all too familiar to Zambia now. A country to lose a president in 50 years is acceptable; two presidents in 25 years is bad luck; but three presidents in ten years is a national crisis. If Zambia should lose President Lungu – I pray Lord his life to spare – that will be calamitous and a curse!

[pullquote]Zambia presently looks like a land where those who make sense, who speak clearly, clearly speak nonsense.[/pullquote]

Zambia is dying, if not already dead, and this is precisely stated for three irrefutable reasons. First, a land may be poor but it will have enough resources to preserve the life of the most important state official, namely the president. Zambia has failed to do so three times. It can be argued that the future is in the hands of God. But it is no brainer that health is mostly a product of prudent management. Zambian healthcare failed to sustain Mwanawasa. It failed Chiluba. It failed Sata. And it is failing to care for President Lungu. Why should a sovereign nation fail to take care of the health of its president? And the big insult is that the so-called state of the art hospitals to which these ailing presidents are evacuated fail to bring them alive! Surely, they would have died, or lived, had they stayed and were cared for under Zambia’s own healthcare system. Does poverty indict itself? The health of a president reflects mostly directly on the state of a nation. Zambia is dying and needs serious and intensive care!

[pullquote]Even before the nation has finished celebrating his victory, the resources that could bring development to an impoverished nation are now going south[/pullquote]
Second, after Sata, and now Lungu, it is very clear that the current crop of Zambian politicians neither respects nor rule by the law. When Michael Sata was sick (and rumours had it that he had long lost his sanity) and he was still president when the constitution is very clear that a president may be removed for lack of capacity. The PF party knew when it fielded in Edgar Lungu that he was sickly, a drunkard and liability, but it loved power more than it loved the people of Zambia. The politicians are so greed that they can prefer to be in power to placing the interest of the nation first. These greedy politicians sacrificed Sata and now Lungu just to be and remain in power. And while all this is being done, meagre national resources which can go a long way to curb poverty and end national ignominy are being diverted to caring for an ailing president. Foreign hospitals have benefited from Zambian’s copper reserves by failing to treat Zambian presidents while the majority Zambians wallow in unspeakable lack of basic needs such as food and clean water.

Third, Zambians, how long should you be victims of hypocrisy, of the lies of power-hungry and greedy politicians? Before the January 20th, 2015 presidential bye-elections, the facts were clear that candidate Lungu was unfit to rule. The PF played a tribal card game to its ephemeral efficiency and won, only to deliver to the people another incapable leader. Slogans (Ifintu ni Lungu) do not change nations, people do. Even before the nation has finished celebrating his victory, the resources that could bring development to an impoverished nation are now going south. Candidate Lungu articulated no vision, stood for no principle and won the election – where on the face of the globe – unless, of course, it is in Zambia! It is not that anyone hates President Lungu; it is only reasonable that in a country of 15 million people a healthy, visionary and credible candidate cannot be found in ten years. President Lungu may end up to be the greatest president ever, but at what cost to the tax-payers? Zambians, wake up; make choices based on reason and truth and not on insubstantial promises from career politicians who have failed to develop the land. The current Zambian politicians are turning vetted democratic and economic ideals into crimes and lies!

    • WHY DO YOU CRY OVER SPILLED MILK? WHY DO YOU PRETEND AS IF YOU DON’T KNOW THE ROOT-CAUSE OF ALL THIS MESS IN OUR COUNTRY? YOUR DEADLY TRIBALISM IS WHAT HAS LED TO THIS LOSS AND SHAME ON ZAMBIA. YOU BEMBAS AND NYANJAS ARE FULL OF TRIBALISM, AND YOU THINK YOU ARE THE ONLY ZAMBIANS WHO SHOULD BE SUPPLYING STATE PRESIDENTS. YOU EVEN DON’T CARE EVEN IF THE PERSON YOU WANT TO MAKE PRESIDENT IS SICK, YOU STILL FORCE US TO MAKE THAT GHOST PRESIDENT AS LONG AS HE IS BEMBA OR NYANJA. GOD WILL CONTINUE TO PUNISH ZAMBIA AS LONG AS YOU CONTINUE PERSECUTING AND MARGINALIZING THE TONGAS, WHO ARE THE TRUE OWNERS OF THE LAND. TONGAS ARE VERY GOOD CARE GIVERS AND ECONOMIC MANAGERS DUE TO THEIR CULTURAL BACKGROUND. WHETHER YOU DENY IT OR NOT, TRUTH IS TRUTH, TONGAS CAN MAKE ZAMBIA A BETTER COUNTRY.

    • Sick President, Kwacha at K7.07 to a dollar, Indeni shut down on Sunday coz of lack of crude oil, fuel crisis in Lusaka soon to spread to the rest of the country, Yaluma saying there is lots of fuel in Zambia so this shortage is artificial…….goodness gracious…..

    • Mr Mwewa,UPND went tribal on it’s own, don’t blame it on PF: The Post Editorial comment 19/01/2015:…..it doesn’t make sence for Dipak to try and distance Hakainde from Munkombwe’s (tribal) statements when he himself is comfortable with them, sees nothing wrong with them. Clearly,it is Dipak who is disturbed by Munkombwe’s (tribal)statements and not Hakainde himself.Anyway,Dipak is in the company of people whose political DNA he does not really understand.By denouncing Munkombwe,Dipak thought he was doing the right thing when he was actually offending the people he is helping to campaign and win an election.

    • Now the same evil-hearted greedy clique that was using ailing Sata as collateral for their jobs and kept lying day and night have now grabbed ailing Lungu as their conduit to hold onto their jobs.

You should be ready to see and hear them fight bare-fisted for survival by denying what everyone can see. They are ready to throw the kitchen sink at anyone standing in their way. They will label them all sorts of name – bitter, unpatriotic, irresponsible, etc.

    • Just in Zambia, 50 years of independence the Catholic Church and other Churches has many and nice Hospitals/better Health Facilities than the Country. Please God rescue Zambia is dying. Thanks Mr. Charles Mwewa. Those with ears let the hear and those with eyes let them see. Thanks.

  1. “…I will fall on them like a tone of bricks!”

Like it or hate it, Mwewa has driven the point home. Many have died who went to seek medical attention outside the country.

Why NOT come up with states of the art hospitals in Zambia, employ more doctors, give them more incentives. Empower the nurses midwives, clinical officers, dentists and the like…believe me no money will be spent on evacuation of whoever.

    Cry my beloved country…

  2. This is now good reporting from LT. What a contrast. Leaders, who claim to be servants of the people are enjoying some comfort when their masters are suffering. Just imagine your gardener enjoying a warm bath in a Jacuzzi when you are bathing a ci bafa made by some entrepreneurs in white cloth in Mandevu compound!!

  3. Its our Bemba friends who see sense in nonsense and vote for sick and visionless Presidents. Bembas delivered victory to Mwanawasa, Sata and now this Chagwa Agwa.

    • @ 6 TT

As long as you continue to see tribalism in them, they will continue to see tribalism in you. It’s an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth. The point is the Bembas, though you continue to accuse them of tribalism, did not vote for their fellow Bemba, Nevers Mumba. They voted, instead, for a Nsenga. Not to be out done, you Tongas, voted en masse for your fellow Tonga, Hakainde. Who between you and the Bembas is the more tribal? Do you mean to tell me that one needs to go to Harvard University to understand this kind of Grade VII special paper I & II type of logic?? How cantankerous you happen to be! I am totally flabbergasted.

    • @ 6 TT

Please help me understand one thing. Do you mean to tell me that only Bembas live in Lusaka, Kabwe and the Copperbelt? These are three major urban areas where Hakainde lost by huge margins. Was it only the Bemba voters who voted in Lusaka, Kabwe and the Copperbelt? And before you accuse me to be Bemba, I am not. I am Totela, and a proud one for that matter. I care less about all this nonsensical tribal affiliations, etc.

    • @ 6 TT

Lastly – for your information, now 50 years or so, after independence, Zambia is yet to have its first indigenous Bemba or Tonga president. There hasn’t been one yet – not a single Bemba president and not a single Tonga president, since independence. Does that tell you something? So what is all this never ending fracas between your two tribes. Do you think you own Zambia? You are totally deluded.

  4. For those that might not be familiar with the topic, The person lying the bed is the former PDD Tumembo Ntochi, shortly after his suspension yesterday.

  5. It’s better to vote for a sick person than a satanist or freemanson. A sick person will just die without causing problems in our houses, now a satanist will eat you, eat your children and cause confusion in the country before he dies. Satana tawakatekepo icalo!

    • People like you will remain suffering in poverty my friend…what freemanson do you will always talk about? You think like a grade Six pupil my friend.Stop the jealousy you have against HH.

    • @hh
You say and I quote you in your own language: “Satana tawakatekepo icalo!” Mwewa in his writing has raised more troubling issues which you would have done better to respond to than to bring up this tired garbage about Satana tawakatekepo bullshit!.
My question is, if a head of state has to be evacuated every time he falls sick, does it not tell you that as a people we have repeatedly voted for the wrong people? Some of the physicians in RSA are Zambians yet because the healthcare system has been killed by political recklessness and sheer mismanagement you, hh, feels it is okay. Where is your national pride? I shudder to think about the country in which your own kids will grow if the only thing you can think about is “Satana tawakatekepo icalo!” My foot!!!!

    • Don’t be trivial. Be serious for once. If you cant see sense in the article By Mwewa then you need your head to be examined. You are the ones who are ruining our country because of avarice. Honestly, do you in your right mind think that Lungu is the best person we can get for president? Please spare us.

    • 8.2, lacks knowledge, these are the people who advocated for increased poverty in Zambia. Honestly how can a people want to get poorer and poorer.
By the way! ‘nurse’ in the photo is just a student nurse indicating that our health don’t only lack material resources but also human resources. Shame!
The some ignorant people still think everything is rosy…..

  6. This is an indictment on our collective wisdom as a people. The greedy politicians come from amongst ourselves. Let us all reflect on our contributions individually to our country’s demise.

    • I didn’t mention anybody to be a freemanson but hw come you are mentioning HH. Is he a member? Who knows when HH, Nawakwi, Nevers, Chipimo or Miyanda will get sick or die. Only a freemanson or satanist will support this article. We chose edger not be coz we are dull but coz he was the better candidate and still he is. Come 2016 freemanson and his followers will be ashamed. Every man’s life is in God’s hand. Continue celebrating in the meantime, coz in 2016 you will cry again, us we only celebrate after victory not at the ill health of anybody.

    • @ 9 itizi turu

Itizi Turu, you say “.. our collective wisdom…” I wonder if we have any? We wouldn’t be where we are today if we had any wisdom at all. Someone once said: “Once beaten, twice shy.” Well, we have been beaten more than once and yet we are not close to having even a miniscule of shyness about it. We keep on falling back into the same ditch, without ever stopping to find out why! Would you call that wisdom? Or must we even blame the so called “greedy politicians” for our misfortune?

  7. Ba Ireen Mambilima,Mugabe, your group and whoever was involved in making your relative a President, are you not ashamed of how much you are now costing the majority of Zambians on the expense of you greed, evil, injustice just for wanting positions??? The God of justices always has s listening ear!! President Obama says Africans are very difficulty to help!!!!! because they put anybody in office even those who are not suppose to be presidents!! SHAME!!!!SHAME!!! upon all those calling themselves BEMBA in the name of tribalism!! Those cards used cease your attitude, do the right thing!!

    • @ 11 Wise

Old Bob must be smiling by now. He managed to out wink even the likes of Mambilima. Edgar Lungu, himself, must have been under the spell of the old man. See how he was trotting back and forth between Lusaka and Harare! Was it the presidency that he wanted so badly, or just to make the iconic Robert Mugabe even more famous?

  8. ONLY A TONGA PRESIDENT CAN MAKE ZAMBIA A BETTER COUNTRY. LATE MWANAWASA MADE A GOOD PRESIDENT BECAUSE HE IS A BANTU-BOTATWE BLOOD. TONGA CULTURAL BACKGROUND IS WHAT MAKES TONGAS UNIQUE FROM THE REST. THEIR HUMILITY, THEIR PATIENCE, THEIR HONESTY, THEIR CARING SKILLS, THEIR NATURAL MANAGERIAL SKILLS IS WHAT CAN MAKE A TONGA PRESIDENT IN ZAMBIA A SUCCESSFUL PRESIDENT. ZAMBIA FORWARD WITH HH. ZAMBIA FORWARD WITH UPND. ZAMBIA HAS BEEN IN THE WILDERNESS FOR YEARS. IT’S NOW TIME FOR ZAMBIA TO GET INTO CANAAN. VOTE FOR A TONGA PRESIDENT. VOTE FOR HH.

    • Has it ever occurred to u that maybe if u jus shut ur dirtty mouth then maybe and jus maybe ur preferred candidate cn win?

  9. nonsensical article….. Just because your preferred candidate is not president does not mean Zambians are dull. Lets open our eyes and see…………….if it was sondashi, you would have said he’s old, Nawakwi ati ni………????? Continue with such behavior and see where it is going to take. It shall never be him unless God says yes. Trust me

  10. Zambia is a christian nation my fellow country men and women … “Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.” Mathew 23:12

  11. Thank you. Very well articulated. Zambian please listen to these words of wisdom from Charles ad do the right thing when we are voting next.

  12. Indeed these are words of wisdom.Freemason or moslem is far better than a dying manLook we have been at stand still since 20 jan.Dont you know that 90%of bussinessen are free masons? Most of the Zambian copperbelt highcost townships are founded or built by massons. What is required is to have a vissionary leader in case Zambia being a christian nation any leader vying for presidency confesses being a christian so what can make them not be convicted or converted to christianity? Most developed leaders their leaders are free massons but that has nothing to do with voting out somebody. The poverty spirit in most Zambians is worse than being a masson. Why has EL been moving with a small stick is that christianity? If we wanted a christian we should have voted for Dr Nervous Mumba or Miyanda.

    • The poverty spirit starts precisely with thinking that Christianity does not believe in witchcraft. The fact of the matter is that religious people are usually the most cult-ridden populations you will ever come across. Because they believe power lies outside of themselves, they therefore explain difficult things by courting witchcraft and superstition. Why are you surprised with this identity you point out?

  13. Very good article! Well done Charles. I wish we could get more writers of your caliber on these blogs. Keep it up.

  14. Ifintu ni Lungu 2016 nafuti nafuti. Freemanson ukokwine bakuchonga. The devil will never rule us under what circumstance. Just like Job was inflicted with sores all over the body so that he can denouce God and worship the devil even us will never turn against him and worship or support the devil. The truth pains coz even himself the freemanson knows that he will never rule hence his bitterness. Continue ranting like mad dogs ifwe ni Lungu chabe

  15. Compare this with the picture of the thug Willie Nsanda in South Africa; he is fat–bordering on obesity, while the patient is emaciated; he is in a world class healthcare facility–but our people languish with these sub-par healthcare institutions, even 50yrs after independence. It is time for a change people–its time for a serious government; it is time to move Zambia forward! We deserve better!
