An unidentified person has died while several others are nursing serious wounds in Kalabo District Hospital after two passenger boats collided head-on on the Luanginga River.

The accident involved a Social Welfare boat which was being tested and was carrying eight people while the other had 10 people on board including a six months old baby who escaped unhurt.

The incident happened yesterday around 16:45 hours a few meters away from Kalabo main harbour.

The deceased died a few hours after arriving at the hospital while four people are nursing wounds while others sustained minor injuries and have since been discharged.

The eight passengers from the Social Welfare boat escaped unhurt.

Assistant Social Welfare Officer Gladys Hansalama who also confirmed the accident only identified the two Coxswains as Mulako and the other as Joe.
One of the victims Susan Sipopa who suffered a hip dislocation explained to ZANIS in an interview from her hospital bed that as the boat she was in approached the harbour she saw a bigger boat coming in the opposite direction less than three meters.

Ms Sipopa observed that the distance was too short and the two Coxswains tried to avoid each other by going in the same direction ending up colliding head on.

She said all the passengers were thrown into the river and only survived because of the life jackets they wore.

  1. This senselessness of killing of innocent people due to lack of judgement and proper training could have been avoided.

  2. I have never seen or heard of such! Luanginga kiyetuna nako yamunda why test it fa harbour?

Batamiwe! We even lose a life over testing a boat when the river is that wide!

  3. The two Coxswains Mulako and the other Joe should be arrested, why go to the same direction……………….they corruptly got the boatmans licence for the inland water marine, but why do that and end up killing an innocent soul, why? they should know the rules on the waters, the left side is the port and the right side is the starboard………..MHSRIP
