Immigration officers warned over passports

Share

Home Affairs Deputy Minister Gerry Chanda has warned the Immigration department that no third party should be involved in the issuance of passports.

Colonel Chanda said the normal channel must be followed and advised the erring officers to desist from such practices if the department was to remain clean.

He charged that the practice was tantamount to corruption and painted a bad picture about the department adding that it was important at all times to maintain the correct image of the organization.

ZANIS reports that the Deputy Minister sounded the warning when he addressed the immigration officers in Mazabuka during his familiarization tour of departments that fall under his ministry in the Southern Province.

Col Chanda also advised that work permits should only be given to deserving foreigners with the intention to come to Zambia to perform jobs that the locals cannot do.

He said the immigration department was an integral part of government and should therefore be relevant in terms of safeguarding internal security in the country.

The Deputy Minister said it was unfortunate that the immigration department in Mazabuka district was operating without reliable transport.

Col Chanda promised the officers in the district that his ministry would do its best to secure a department vehicle for them to use so that their work could be efficient.

Earlier, Immigration Officer-In-Charge in Mazabuka Biston Muyoma disclosed that Mazabuka, Monze and Gwembe districts had recorded a high number of foreigners coming to do business compared to other areas in the province.

Mr Muyoma added that Mazabuka was the only active district in the province without a departmental vehicle to ease operations in the other four districts under its jurisdiction namely Pemba, Chikankata, Monze and Gwembe.
