Orica Mining Services in Kalulushi has donated books worth US$ 30,000 to Kalulushi Secondary School Library through the company’s corporate social responsibility.

Orica Country Director Anthony Mwila said this in Kalulushi today during the donation held at Kalulushi secondary school.

Mr. Mwila said his company strongly felt it should partner with the school in terms of educational needs as empowering the community would help alleviate poverty which in turn would develop the district.

Mr. Mwila said his company believed that educating a child would secure the community and the country as a whole.

He urged the teachers and the pupils to guard the books jealously as they would be used for other future children as well.

Receiving the donation, District Education Board Secretary (DESO) Charity Kowa said the availability and use of the educational materials had a positive effect on student learning and performance.

Mrs. Kowa in a speech read on her behalf by Patrick Kaonga, said Orica Mining Services had clearly demonstrated that, empowering the local community in the areas of their operation was cardinal in alleviating poverty among the people.

She said, with the donation of educational materials, Kalulushi was poised to improve the education levels among the pupils.

She assured the mining company that the educational materials would be put to good use by the pupils and teachers, and that they would guard them jealously for the benefit of the community.

And Kalulushi District Commissioner Kampamba Mulenga said government through the Ministry of Education had recognised the importance of literacy levels in the early stages of the children.

Mr. Mulenga said it was undeniable that reading was vital in the development of the nation as it bridged the gap with the outside world and provided knowledge for the development opportunities.

  1. If you ask them how that $30,000 was used you will realise that only less than half was used to pay for the books while the rest was spent on allowances. Biology, chemistry and physics text books at Bookworld on Cairo road cost K160 each and these are the most expensive secondary school books. How many books have they donated for them to say they are worthy that much? Lies all the way!

  2. How relevant are these books to the curriculum that has undergone change? I bet most of them are a donation from the west. Yes, the donation is welcome but it must be in line with the present curricular.
