Statement on the recently concluded by-elections

We would like to start by thanking all UPND supporters and party members who worked hard throughout this by-election campaign. Your energy and dedication is greatly appreciated. In these by-elections we have once again demonstrated that the UPND is providing the only major opposition to the current PF Government. The inroads we have made into Eastern Province and our strong performance in the Senga Hill parliamentary by-election also provide further evidence that the UPND’s popularity continues to surge across the length and breadth of the country.

We would also like to congratulate the wining candidates and appeal to them to serve the public’s interest at all times, putting aside selfish or personal interests. However, it would seem that voter apathy was once more the real winner yesterday, with low turnouts recorded. Just 15% of registered voters are reported to have turned out in the Chawama parliamentary by-election.

Zambians, having been let down by government after government, are understandably fatigued by politics. Elected representatives must regain the confidence of the people by working hard, working in a transparent manner and serving the interest of all their constituents equally, and not just those that have voted for them. From the opposition we will continue to deliver our message that Zambians deserves better from their Government and that change is well within our reach in 2016.

As the UPND has rehearsed time and time again we believe the staggering and unprecedented amount of by-elections held under the PF Government has been a colossal waster of money that could be better spent on much needed investments into our health and education systems. It has also taken up a large amount of Government time and attention when they should be focused on addressing the plight of the people and not campaigning here, there and everywhere. Our position remains that by improving the credibility of the electoral process and introducing the new constitution we can avoid the need for so many by-election and thereby avoid this waste.

We must now all work together to ensure free and fair tripartite elections in 2016. We are please to note that President Lungu has acquiesced to our demand for the nomination of a new Chairperson for the ECZ. We must now turn our attention to scrutiny of the nomination, the upcoming voter registration exercise, and working with the ECZ to ensure problems presented by past elections are address, so that a level playing field and a transparent process for 2016 is ensured.

Hakainde Hichilema
President UPND

  1. No mention of the new Constitution before the 2016 elections. The message has sunk in. It is a none issue being peddled only by the Grand Collision (sic).

    • Thank you HH, you are our only hope to stir the country in the right direction….direction of economic independence. I am not sure what value the up coming by elections in Petauke, Malambo and Mulobezi will add to our democracy? Surely, we could be a lot smarter and use our merger resources providently; like provide health care to citizens in Chawama

    • HH has not mentioned anything to suggest that the “elections results” were “stolen” from the UPND. Shall we take it that he now accepts the peoples wishes to be lead by Edgar Lungu?
His recent demonalisation of Edgar Lungu, while “warming up” to Fred M’membe and his Post Newspaper has not gone down well with anyone familiar with the Cartel. HH will do well to distance himself from the Post and the ZWD if he is to remain relevant in the 2016 General elections.

    • Quote: “We are please to note that President Lungu has acquiesced to our demand for the nomination of a new Chairperson for the ECZ.”

This is the kind of arrogance which PUTS OFF a lot of people about HH!

Does HH really think that if he didn’t say anything about the appointment of a new ECZ chairperson, the president wouldn’t have done so? And of course most folks know he probably said that after his informants told him the president was about to announce a nominee for ECZ. He then rushes to the media to issue a statement thinking Zambians are i.d.!ots they can’t see through such machinations.

Unfortunately for him the only people he has managed to convince that voters actually care about such peripheral matters is himself and his cadres. But he doesn’t seem to get it!

  2. his excellency of southern. province you seem to be sure of change come 2016,of course we have had vote apathy but vote apathy did not win, people won,Pf won.anyway good luck in 2016 you will need it

  3. DONT NOT WORRY UPND

EVEN IF RB HAS APPOINTED CHULU AS ECZ CHAIRMAN
    2016 WILL BE DIFFERENT
    FROM TRUE PF PARTY
    THUMBS UP TO UPND

    WINA AND KAINGU NO FACTORS
    EVEN IN CHIPANGALI CONSTITUENCY
WOMANISER VINCENT MWALE SHOWN HOW IT IS DONE.
GOVT MACHINERY EVEN CHIEF MPANDE WAS CAMPAIGNING
    UBUSUSHI

SIMBAO U WILL LOSE IN 2016 WITH YOUR RUPIAH

    • With such childish and shallow analysis, are surprised then that Zambian voters keep showing you their “middle finger”?

Trying to make yourselves feel better after such a walloping is one thing, but being insolent and lying to yourselves about facts that everybody can see is just plain st.u.p!d.

For as long as UPND keep lying to itself about issues that have prevented this once vibrant party from becoming a party Andy Mazoka and colleagues envisioned, it will take an eternity for you to produce a president.

Hakainde as leader of a major political party has major flaws which he seems unwilling to change. The time you people in UPND acknowledges this fact is the moment UPND’s fortunes will start to change for the better—a deep and honest introspection wouldn’t hurt!

  4. Kolopa.Com indicators we are warming up. Fintu ni HEEL 2016 (His Excellence Edgar Lungu 2016). The rains spoilt our margin.

  5. HH you are finished politician together with your friend NEVERS MUMBA u are both useless politicians. We told you towards the 20 January Presidential by-election that the strategy to remove PF was to let RB contest so that in 2016 u take it from there, but corrupt as you are and NEVERS MUMBA you started hiring students from high learning institutions like UNZA and CBU to denounce RB that was childish of you HH and NEVERS MUMBA and both of you have no interest of the country at heart. NEVERS MUMBA even went further to enter into deals with dirty people like Rajan Mahtani just for love of money and whant Christianity values can we learn from this pastor who involve himself in corruption just to satisfy his greedy and his wife Florence. MMD people please watch out chase this man

    • When you look at the results with a critical mind, you wouldn’t say PF scored 3 against UPND’s 0. In fact that is MMD+PF share individual constituency votes against ONE UNITED AND EVER GROWING UPND! So who has really won?

  6. Bakunaya kapoli iwe. Its high time you and that scruffy guy ( Cannisius Madman Banda) took issues of bathing seriously coz of late everytime you open your mouth, the stench coming out is no different from a Cesspool

  7. Kuli kanthu, some are in jubilation while others are crying! There is nothing is wrong. That is how elections are – there are winners and losers

  8. The emerging spirit of non-violence during elections and maturity being exhibited by major political players in dealing with national issues must be applauded loudly by all well meaning Zambians. It is now clear that Zambia has no room for politicians who view political violence, intolerance and intimidation as a means of ascending or clinging to power. The loud fall from grace of one politician made Zambians aware of who brought to birth panga=wielding cadres and the suppression of the general citizenry.

  9. Mr HH kindly desist from making pronouncements which you know is on the President’s tray. It is not different plagiarism. I am sure you used to copy a lot when you were at UNZA.
No wonder you cannot explain economic fundamentals and just blame everything on the President

  10. 3-0 and you believe you’re gaining popularity??? This man must be living in fools paradise. If you’re walloped, then you’re losing popularity full stop. Mukamutwaleko HH ku chainama. Napena. Katwishi fwaka apepa!!

  11. 2 – 0; PF and EL in the lead. The just ended elections were the added time of the first half. Second half is coming and that is 2016. Kuyumayuma badala.

  12. I wonder why the politicians still continue to go for by- elections when they know this is wasting resources. people are tired to go for voting every day. let all by -elections that are or may come after these be unopposed. we see what happens. to me this will be good for people not to waste energy and time instead of going to find money to feed their families.
we just have to wait for 2016. wiser politicians please decide when to got for elections and not always going. people will know who are the true politicians who want to save the Nation. let us save the Ngwee for so that it can be used for our poor families and develop this country.
Political parties organize yourselves for the remaining time and position your part for 2016. do not go for any of the by-elections.

  13. We are please to note that President Lungu has acquiesced to our demand for the nomination of a new Chairperson for the ECZ.
You demand things which u have already heard are forth coming and u claim its you.
Why not do the same with by elections by demanding u have won and then u win,
    HA HA HA HA !!!!!
    We now know your tricks.
REST IN PEACE UP aN Down

    VIVA PF

  14. HH just step aside people don’t like your politics plus the hate massages propagated by the watchdog is eating up your career. Change the massage in the watchdog talking about Edgar’s health like indoshi is unzambian.Zambians think the massage in the watchdog is you opinion and therefore the massage have caused people to hate you to the extent of calling you SATANIST.

  15. The results of this election were a forgone conclusion. No one really expected anything different. All these mock elections are meaningless. The only election that means anything in Zambia is the presidential election. What has parliament ever done that means anything? The president is given too much power in the current constitution. Ati by election! Kekekekeke

    • But you have been getting whacked in presidentials also, four times to be specific, so what is your point?

  16. The winning of wards in Eastern Province shows that the party is growing.
Please tribes do not develop the country RB was from Eastern province,Chiluba from Luapula,Sata and Kaunda from Northern and Mwanawasa from lamba land but did these people develop their provinces and people are not in poverty?
Let us think wisely and vote wisely in 2016.
Thank you all provinces as you have shown that there is no tribalism in Zambia.People want equal share of national development. Thanks for eastern, northern,North western,Western,Lusaka and Copper belt province as there is an increase in the number of votes for UPND.

  17. HH is not a politician but a rich businessman, so we are told, then what is he doing with UPND? Losing elections meaning and no strategy, no planning, believing ZWD votes, he is clueless in politics!!!

  18. I find it interesting to read the shallow comments from PF cadres. The parliamentary bye elections have just proved that the Senga Hill and Masaiti seats were wrongfully nullified in the first place and PF is just riding on the popularity of two MPs. A close analysis of the results also indicates that UPND has gained popularity in Northern province. The ward elections tell a compelling story that UPND has solid support in NW and Western provinces and has growing support in Eastern province. You can dismiss these facts at your peril. As a party in govt PF pumped a lot of money into these elections and also dangled the development carrot to voters to help the already popular candidates in two of the constituents. Chawama is Chagwa’s back yard so no supprised there since voters are proud

    • Quote: “the results also indicates that UPND has gained popularity in Northern province.”

So what does this say about BEMBAS you !d!ots in UPND love to insult and call TRIBALISTS? Contrast these results in NP/MP with the voting patterns in Southern Province and tell me who the REAL TRIBALISTS are.

But you know what, such is the LOG IN UPND’s EYE which everybody else can see except you folks in UPND. Your unwillingness to acknowledge this fact and do something about it can only spell political doom for you. Bembas aren’t political enemies you have made them out to be!

These glaring double standards when it comes to issues of TRIBALISM and party politics in UPND will do very little for the party to shade the tribal/regional tag—denial and deflection ain’t gonna cut it.

  19. what a dreamer! ati demanded. your silly goons at state house obviously informed you that HEEL was going to appoint chulu as ECZ chairperson then you hurriedly come up with a statement ‘demanding’ what you already know was going to happen. cheap politician. you think we are dull? so mwazi nvesa na bwino ati we told HEEL to appoint ECZ chairperson? yaba jsut coz you are under 5 doesnt mean the sharp zambian are also children who cant see through your childish little scheme kikiki

  20. HH you also to blame for the numerous by elections. Right now you are about expel all your MPs who are serving in government. I only hope when this comes, you will let the PF go unopposed so that we avoid further by elections.

  21. OF COURSE HH IS VERY POPULAR FOR LOSING AND HE IS NUMBER ONE SO ONCE AGAIN CONGRATULATION FOR LOSING!!! IT WILL BE THE SAME IN 2016 AND SURELY IT WONT EVEN BE 3-0 BUT 9-3.

HH IS A MESS HE WENT LONDON AND TOLD PEOPLE THERE THAT PF HAS FAILED BUT THE TRUTH IS THAT THE VOTERS ARE THE JUDGES WHO ARE SEEING THE BENEFITS OF THE PF GOVT AND 2016 THEY WILL GIVE PF NUMEROUS VOTES.

AS FOR HH LET HIM KEEP ON LOSING HE GIVES US NEWS kkkkkkkk

  22. These statements wont get you anywhere. Get down to work. Start party mobilisation now otherwise you will be headed for fifth defeat next yea. PF is at its weakest point. Capitalise on this please! Otherwise we shall joine Winter Kabimba because he looks set than the UPND at the moment. Please start forming branches, wards and costituency structures through out Zambia. Only then will victory come.

    • Which planet do you live in? Always blind to the truth. Keep on dreaming comrade because the HH train is coming and every one is getting on board.

  23. UPND should be proud of the outcome because MMD, ABZ and PF had to come together to defeat UPND in the just ended parliamentary by-elections

  24. What is happening to the Zambian Watchdog the on line newspaper for HH? After 3 – 0 no news any more ? Now we want Winter Kamimba in 2016 so that we show him that it was not him or the cartel that made Sata to win but the people of Zambia. Hichilema and his fellow bantu botatwe Kabimba will be put in the political dust bin where they belong.

    • Senga Hill, Chawama and Masaiti and then you mention Bantu Botatwe. Looks like some people have stopped thinking and all what they can do is sheet from their brain. So Winter Kabimba was removed as PF SG because of being among the 3 Bantus.

  25. Hehehehehehehehehehehehehe.

HH is such a pathetic weasel. All he does is lie, smear and scaremonger. He is so utterly clueless is frightening.

I have said it before and i’ll say it again. Change your strategy!!! Also get rid of the likes of Siyakalima and the two Bandas just to mention a few.

What the people want is policy and not the blatant negativity that we are being fed by UPND/HH/ZWD.

  26. Uwawa tabula kabepesho. The writings are on the wall. The way you came on the political front is the source of your hindrance to National leadership.

  27. Frankly, HH must be very disappointed that he lost Masaiti! PF is not even very popular in Copperbelt or Lusaka Rural areas. In the presidential election, the UPND edged out the PF in Masaiti, why couldn’t this feat be repeated at parliamentary level? There is a clear lack of political wisdom when a candidate selected is not a local individual with whom the constituents are well acquainted.

  28. In Eastern we don’t care were he comes from but what matters is leadership qualities and only HH man of the moment kuno kwithu.lundazi.

  29. It takes a gentleman to lose four consequetive elections, accept defeat and brace for a fifth attempt whose result are unequally promising. For sure we are differently talented.

  30. HH is going nowhere, this shows that PF is seriously drowning UPND. what voter apathy is the fool talking about? what proof is there that people are not voting because gvt has failed them? they are not voting because of worthless tribalist like HH.

  31. When HH does his job as an opposition leader he is called names. I wonder when you fools are ever going to grow up.

  32. Dear HH
Why not such congratulate nicely. You always have a barb in there somewhere. Innuendo that last election was unfair, playing field is not level, etc etc. just say Well Done and finished. Each of your statements must have some cry-baby in it. As we say, let the best man win. So if PF was better, acknowledge with dignity and be humble, not arrogant

  33. If voter apathy is high, UPND better take heed. It says people are either happy with the status quo or they feel there is no better alternative, so why bother voting. Its when lines form outside polling stations that u know people want to take a stand and try change things. 15% turnout shows that people are fed up with politics and UPND has not motivated them to take a stand. Unless u are on muvi tv of course……

  34. Ck my brother you are right. Us easterners are not tribal and we dont care where someone comes from as long as they can deliver. We know the tribe that is trying to divide the country and takana.
