President Edgar Lungu has challenged Zambians to appreciate chiefs for the role they play in preserving culture in the country.

President Lungu said chiefs play a critical role in the preservation of nature and culture because they were the main custodians of heritage.

He said it was also important that chiefs’ roles do not end at their promotion of tradition but should also impact on the development of rural areas.

President Lungu said it was clear that Zambia was not adding value to the natural resources despite the country being blessed with abundant forestry.

He said most of the natural resources that must benefit all citizens end up in the wrong hands and in the hands of a few individuals.

He said when properly empowered, chiefs can play an active role in preserving nature through monitoring and controlling the indiscriminate cutting down of trees.

And Mr. Lungu has noted that most problems that affect chiefdoms were poaching, early marriages and illegal fishing.

The President has meanwhile condemned the idea of visiting chiefs only when it is time for political campaigns.

President Lungu since called on people in the country to support their respective chiefs because government alone cannot satisfy their needs.

  1. I get a feeling ka Lungu would have been better suited as a ceremonial president. Honestly, what has he accomplished so far? except for such useless PR stunts like schmoozing with chiefs.

    • This is a president from PF, the same party that embarrassed the Chitimukulu with impunity. The same party who whose president at that time, Sata, said he was listening in to what Chief Jumbe was saying n his bedroom. No one in PF defended the the Chiefs then, so how can we trust them now?

    • Where is the minister of chiefs & traditional affairs for Lungu to be glimpsed in matters that can be made by otherwise?

Lungu is mute on the demolishing economic & kwacha. Day in & out its never ending swearing in ceremonies, enticing by elections, looting by PF regrettable BANDITS.

Can Lungu please address the nation with the immolation complications of Kaizer Zulus’ $200,000 corruption scandal. Surely the visionless has smelt the disgusting rot. Willie Nsanda too, buried K6 billion & other currencies of which that looted monies should be in circulation. Alas, the PF BANDITS are crimpling the country, poverty, hunger is what majority of Zambians have ever known!

What about the $15,000 kicks backs to Lungu from Nitrogen Chemicals?

    • this lungu of yours supprises me,,, just afew day ago he was `fighting` with lamba chiefs in Ndola ,,, today ati respect chiefs… to what i know,,, lungu respects thieves not chiefs

    • For the first time since coming to power, Lungu has spoken something sensible. He is stating that the role of Chiefs/ Traditional Leaders is that of custodians of culture, customs, traditions etc. Not what chiefs are agitating for such as land administration or is it selling.

Some tribes are big headed to the extent of some claiming to be kingdoms which they were not during the era when monarchs were the in thing.
Some which have never had paramount chiefs now are demanding to have paramount chiefs and for what.
This tribe thing has brought a lot of tribe consciousness causing divisions.
In this era the best governance system is democracy and not the noncence kingdoms or chifdoms.
The Govt should make a stand on this issue so that we can move on

  2. Lungu, you know the chiefs’ stand on the new constitution. Do not conspire with them and deny it to Zambians . Put the public first and fulfill your pledges. Do not be misguided by those fighting just to retain their jobs otherwise 2016 will catch you offguard fighting petty chieftaincy wars. Your league is above that division. Engage yourself in national and international affairs where you really belong. Do not bend that low.

    • What these chiefs want is just land to continue selling it. And some of these chiefs are just selling land without regard of the future generation. Some of these chiefs have made a livelihood out of this land selling. This is why they are resisting the clause in the draft constitution.
The Govt should make a stand on this one, why have parallel structure doing the same thing, thw Govt and the Chiefs, that’s confusion

  3. Bwana president, the Zambian people have always respected chiefs. It was you and your PF who have set a very bad trend of meddling in traditional affairs. So do not lecture us Mr. President, instead just practice what you preach,…..in fact do not preach. …just practice.

  4. Good message and very welcome, Mr. President. Our chiefs really deserve our appreciation and support.

Shonas have Monomotapa Hotel in Harare and the jews have King David Jerusalem hotel. Why don’t we have Chitimukulu Crowne Plaza, a world-class, 5 star elegance hotel in Lusaka? I would be very happy to invest in such a project in honour of our paramaount chief.

  5. Indeed, they are just a nuisance, can Lungu give them their terms of reference plz, they seem to have departed from their mandate

  6. Why should we? It annoys me that there’s nothing they do! |No civic duties in villages. People are cultivating in the drainages of roads and the chiefs are there watching. Grass is all over villages and malaria is spreading while chiefs and their headmen dont do anything. Fingi ifyo ningalanda, bachabechabe fye. What do they even discuss in the House of Chiefs
