The Zambia Medical Association has advised the Zambian government to allow for conjugal visits and create the necessary spaces for the humane and dignified enjoyment of intimacy of incarcerated persons.

Association President Aaron Mujajati said under these circumstances, condoms could be distributed and the spread for HIV/AIDS could be checked effectively.

Dr Mujajati said conjugal visits have many advantages including that of inducing good behavior among inmates.

‘What about the wives to the inmates? Many a time we do not consider the fact that they are also being punished in the process,’ Dr Mujajati stated.

He however called for appropriate legislation to mitigate the security risks that may come with allowing for conjugal visits but added that the benefits far outweigh the risks.

‘The Zambia Medical Association, ZMA, is concerned with calls for the distribution of condoms in prisons as a response to the spreading of HIV/AIDS among inmates. For starters, have we as a country created the appropriate infrastructure to facilitate sexual intercourse among prisoners? Do we have a legal framework that allows for sex among prisoners?’

He added, ‘sex is a biological function of human beings, which will be sought under any circumstances no matter the barriers. It (sex) serves functions integral to the survival of the human organism and the peaceful co-existence of men and women.’

Dr Mujajati observed that human beings with healthy and satisfying sexual relations normally display pleasant outward interpersonal relations than the sexually starved that tend towards irritation and violent behavior.

He said sexual intercourse helps reduce stress levels thereby allowing for a healthy function of the body.

‘A criminal justice system ignorant of biology such as ours here in Zambia is a recipe for disaster: it breeds violent men and women who desperately seek unnatural ways of relieving themselves of the built-up tension within their systems. This is counter to the principle that underpins the prison system-the reformation of the prisoner.’

He charged that prisons in Zambia have become a revolving door for both HIV/AIDS and unnatural acts of sex in addition to producing men and women who may fail to recover from the habits they may have acquired while behind bars resulting in their becoming socially dysfunctional.

‘It is a known fact that new HIV transmissions in prisons do occur but we choose to be unclear on the mode of transmission and sexual violence among inmates is also under-reported, he said.

Dr Mujajati said to forestall the foregoing developments, elsewhere in the world, governments have provided for conjugal visits and private spaces within prison facilities where inmates could at least enjoy this biological necessity.

‘These are jurisdictions that appreciate the critical role that sex plays among human beings and do not wish to underplay the effects on society should it be denied.’

  1. Ha ha ha! Speaking from experience I suppose! So they will provide rooms and beds. The Prison guards will be in trouble to guard these premises and to tell the couple that your visiting time is over.

    • Dr. Mujajati, you’re insane! What’s the point of going to prison if one can still enjoy good sex, access free health care, 24-hr security and even free food, at the tax payer’s money – who happens to be the victim??

    • Gents what you should understand is that 90% OF SERIOUS CRIMINAL are outside and most in government still your tax money so please do not judge these guys inside some of them are innocent but the could not defend themselves and the don’t have the money these real criminals have to pay to stay outside.

    • Very bold statement and very true. We have to treat prisoners as human beings. This has to be managed wisely though.Who is going to look after all the prison babies born when the bread winner is incarcerated. However,on the bright side this may help reduce homosexual behaviour in prisons, reduce spread of HIV,reduce stress levels etc

    • I expect “DR” Mujajati to have heard of something called MASTURBATION. This is and should remain the only decent way of relieving sexual pressure for prisoners. And it is this absence of the usual privileges and amenities which should be deterrent to criminals, and be a catalyst for quicker reform for the incarcerated; otherwise there will be no point in imprisoning them in the first place. If we are sympathetic to Dr Mujajati’s sentiments we’ll award conjugal visits, then beer & whisky, then provide night clubs and movie houses in prisons – defeating the whole essence of jail time completely!!!

    • Mujajati ama buku yaku toba umutwe te?? People are sent to PRISON to be punished NOT ENJOY THEMSELVES!! End of story – stop clamouring for useless headlines for non-issues!!

    • Your thinking is very correct but this has worked out in other countries though i don’t know about where it worked in africa.Europe and the US have managed.

    • Listen fellas, if you mess up and end up in jail, no way am coming to that filthy jail to open my legs for you for two minutes. The first thing am doing is divorce your behind and get me a new man. You can find your new man in jail too. Any decent woman would never succumb to sex while being “watched”. It’s utterly degrading to say the least.

  2. Great advise and very timely. Governments needs to create the space in order to stop the spread of HIV and homosexuality. Habits picked up in prison stay with people forever.

  3. I wonder how it will work with our highly congested prisons. I guess those private rooms will be extremely busy and one has to book months in advance get access.

  4. WOW! biologically its important, not knowing how they will be accommodating them. Good intention.

  5. Waste of time article and very subtle, too. You just want to find a way of distributing condoms in prisons.

  6. Excellent idea – i fully support it. Prisoners are human beings and we should treat them as such!!

Government – am waiting for your intelligent response – not the Kambwili outburst.

    Best

  7. Good idea as we’re all prisoners in waiting just like we are all funerals in waiting!!life must be made easy for prisoners by allowing those with wives to be making love atleast twice per month!!!BUT THE BIGGEST PROBLEM IS HOW TO FIND FREE BED SPACES IN PRISONS WHERE TO MAKE LOVE!!!LET MIGHTY PF LOOK INTO THIS AND BUILD NICE LODGES NEXT TO PRISONS SO THAT THIS CAN BE A REALITY!!!

    • Rabbish why do you think retrogressively a busy mind is never disturbed keep prisoners busy with a lot of activities to have their minds busy and will have peaceful sleep.e jele.

  8. What a dim wit!
    a) He is assuming that all prisoners are married. Not true!
    b) A prisoner or any person cannot survive without sex! Not true
    c) Having sex is a human right. Not true
    d) Being in prison should NOT be a punishment. What are prisons for? This doctor is a quack! Who is going to look after those children born from prison escapades? Where is the evidence that prisoners not having sex are suffering from pyschological effects? How can a doctor prescribe sex? This doctor must be de-registered for misconduct.

  9. It’s there in one of the latin american countries lol…. too much PONYO PONYO nama shinsha hahahahaha

  10. “I WANT TO HEAR THE COMMENT OF THOSE IN CELIBACY”

  11. In this sense, it seems to me that Zambia is exactly like the USA. Prisons are meant to punish not to rehabilitate the individual. Not a good solution to crime.

  12. Demonic dotolos. Let me teach you since your professors missed to teach you in social sciences which you never had the luxury to learn plus the faith based classes (Christian faith). A prisoner is a person who has his rights taken away and is under supervision by the state. He has no rights except those which the state allows and are limited. Sex is not one of those! Even you when you get imprisoned you should know that your wings will be chopped off. What part of being a prisoner you don’t understand? These days the ZMA is making very strange pronouncements. Satanism is creeping in this organization slowly.

  13. Can Dr. Mujajati pair the female and male prisoners so that they start the ball rolling!!! When someone is in prison, sexual feelings disappear when he/she sees a relative or let alone a spouse that come top visit them… only emotions and mr/ms…organ may not even react!!!

The paired prisoners can have exchange visits within the prisons!!!!!LOL

  14. Foolish statement and it can spread HIV, it is better they masturbate in there rooms then sex urge will finish.

  15. Always one must be careful with media headlines. This one is also misleading. This is as I understand is only a recommendation to govt. and an informed one for that matter.

I first read the story in the Post. Zambia is full of contradictions for a country that has aligned its supreme law with religion. Not a lot gets done to safeguard people’s rights. We dwell too much on beliefs without paying attention to realities and sound advice from professionals such as ZMA.

Prisons are a haven of lawlessness with sodomy being rampant and never punished just as prison rape. It is okay when it happens in prison because they are condemned.

Mujajati got two things wrong in his otherwise good advice. That sex is always between male and female and that prisoners cannot be married females …

  16. Yes it is high time we started treating the prisoner well and give them some rights so that when their time is up, they would have reformed and hopefully not end up being PF cadres. Actually we should consider building a prison for politicians only as there is not enough space in the current prisons. We have currently many criminals running the affairs of our country and after next year I would like to see these men and women behind bars. I hope they will enact the law for conjugal rights for prisoners because they will equally enjoy the service after their time in govt.

  17. Here comes another business opportunity…I will build maximum security “private rooms for hire” facilities adjacent to all prisons. Happy dys

  18. Here comes another business opportunity…I will build maximum security “private rooms for hire” facilities adjacent to all prisons. Happy days

  19. People go to jail because they abuse their freedom rights. Stop turning prisons in to brothels and build correctional units for petty crime. Get these people to do community work which could involve cleaning the cities. You could also get these people build roads, repair existing ones in areas where crime was committed. The Chinese are so enterprising in that not only are they utilising criminals but offering them a second chance to go to places like Zambia to rebuild their lives.

  20. ….this is a very twisting ‘turncoat’ topic…I don’t know whether to be in support or not…most people refrain from committing obvious offences because of the thot of not having sex while in prison…so in short, sex or lack of it plays as a deterrent in a way…so now the sentencing phrase ..’15yrs with hard labour has to be expanded to 15yrs with hard labour and privilege to conjugal visits or 15yrs with hard labour and NO privilege to conjugal visits….because I do not expect some-one who went in for defiling a 2yr old girl or for raping an eighty year old grandmother to be given privilege of conjugal visits…may be cases like RB goes in for abuse of office or Eric Chanda goes in for defaming EL..
..convicts will be appealing only for conjugal visits component if denied..

  21. We should turn Dr. Mujajati’s house into prison and then allow what he is proposing take place in his house. We can extend his house and then we will grant everyone the rights he is asking for. Some of the prisoners should mingle with his wife too. How do I sound, ZMA? Like someone who has been to school or like a mental patient?
