Esther fight ends on controversial note

Share

Esther Phiri’s second match since returning to the ring last December ended on a controversial note on Friday night at Government Complex in Lusaka.

The fight was halted in the 3rd round after Esther’s opponent Sandra Almeida suffered a deep cut on her left temple in a fight that fell short on quality before a third round flurry.

The South African bled profusely as she returned to her corner after the third round and it took at least six minutes for her cutman to stem the flow of blood.

However, the judges had by that time come to decision and called it a technical draw, something that also Esther did not agree with as as technical knockout was a more legitimate outcome.

Meanwhile, Almeida insisted the fight should have continued.

“I have the best cutman and believe I could have still go on,” Almeida said.

A rematch has been mooted in the next two months.

  1. Esther Phiri won this fight!!that south afriacan boxer was not Esther’s class.our boxer was outstanding during that fight.but too bad for her bcoz the judgement was really poor!!!

    • @Eddy, your dead right – Our Esther won, and will STIIL beat that girl anytime anywhere anyday! I didn’t know Esther’s head was inside her gloves!!!! Hahahaha…!!!

  2. Esther won the Match just as Cathrine did. I do not know why the judges are so against Zambian boxers. That south African were bitten clearly. We saw it.

  3. i was in boxing for than 35 yrs and am qualified coach i ve not heard that vidict .what we know that was techincal knock out bcoze that ws just punch which injured that one . the question is wat made that fight to stop ?

    • Imwe bantu what are you talking about? May be yoy were in boxing 100 years ago. There’s such a verdict. It happens when one boxer can’t continue because he is injured outside boxing rules. This injury should be one caused by a clash of heads or anything caused by someone/thing outside the ring. Esther’s main argument is just that the South African was injured by esther’s fist not head. No matter how much hometown emotions you put in this Sandra was no push over. At the time of ending the fight noone had an upper hand.

  4. Prior to my applauding Esther Phiri on her indisputable victory, though denied unfairly, I would like to make known my thoughts on Cathy’s last fight:

    Cathy,
There can never be a true champion that has never known defeat.
I’m convinced that you’re going to become one of the best female boxers on this planet; in fact, you already are.
You no longer have to be held captive by the pressure of simply holding the unbeaten record. Instead, you will concentrate on perfecting you skills.
    You’re a powerful boxer.

    • @ saviour etc, Mayweather is a champion and has not yet tasted defeat.

2015 has not been good for Zambia presidentially, economically, footbally, rainically now boxally…. And kwachally.

    • sup…etc,

  5. Esther:
    You won that fight!
However, I don’t want you to harbour grudges against anyone because that’s the enemy’s desire.
Maintain your Cool, stay focused, and continue training effectively: you’re still young; you have a bright boxing future.

It’s your determination and strong will that has helped you thwart the intents of the evil one whose goal was to under play you into a retirement you never yearned for.
You managed to regain your form in such a short period of time.
    I’m proud of you girl.

  6. To those that handled the judgement:
Are you not ashamed of yourselves?
Give an answer to one question majority Zambians are now asking: what is Esther supposed to do in order to be declared the winner of a fight?
Knock an opponent’s head off the stiff neck in an instant so the judges will have no option but to declare her the winner—or the murderess?

The best way to maintain boxing sportsmanship (or sportswomanship) is simply to be fair in your judgement: boxing is a combat sport—it’s very dangerous, we don’t want a situation where certain boxers have to kill their opponents in the ring in order to be declared winners.
You can do better than this!

    God bless.

  7. Esther,

You are indeed are super boxer. No one so far in Zambia can be your match. They spoke rubbish against you and yet you shamed them last night.

Your quality of boxing is just super.

You are one of the few boxers who can read the game and dictate it.

You dont throw punches any how.

Continue training hard lady. Very few sportsmen/women have come back with a bang as you have done.

ABASH HATERS OF ESTHER. VIVA ZAMBIA

  8. But there was a similar vedict in the first fight. What is the difference.Watch the fights when they will be repeated at supersport 9.I’m sure the judges saw something that we did see.I’m a supporter of Esther. She grew in Mtendere and I grew up in Kalingalinga and we both left the shanty compounds very successful. We did it and everyone can do it.Keep it Sis!

  9. I have a PVR and when I put it in the “slow motion” mode I did not see any clash of heads.

  10. Ester phiri is finished boxer my appeal to her trainer is that if she wants to continue then change the strategy.
    1. Ester was looking tired.
    2. Ester was not guarding her face making her vulnerable.
    3. She was not offensive she was worried.
    4. Ester was just fighting for the sake of fighting not wining.
5.Ester requires proper training not that ramshackle of ka small room at heroes stadium.
Take my advise she is worse than Catherine .Live it or take it watch the next fight
    4.

  11. Esther did not win.

    Judges were professional.
    1. Both fighters did not earn enough points.
    2. Esther was defensive rather than being offensive. She reserved herself too much.
    3. The fight was not attractive.

Otherwise verdict was ok and exists.
