Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) president Dr Nevers Mumba says the former ruling party will not be forced by anyone to be taking part in the by-elections as long as it is not ready to do so.
Mr Mumba said the MMD learnt a lesson after the January 20th 2015 presidential by-election in which the party tumbled after being forced to do so by party members who even opted to back other political parties.
“We shall not be intimidated, forced or arm twisted by anyone to be taking part in the by-elections when we are not ready because we learnt our lesson during the presidential by-elections in which our party members decided to back other presidential hopefuls instead of MMD candidate so this time we are very, very careful with whatever decision we are taking as a party,” Dr Mumba said.
He explained that it was regrettable that MMD officials in Eastern Province led by Jacob Mwanza could not adhere to what the party had decided not to participate in Petauke Central and Malambo by-elections slated for June 30th this year.
Dr Mumba said the decision which the MMD took not to participate in Petauke Central, Malambo and Mulobezi constituency’s by elections was in the interests of the country.
He explained that the party would rather save the monies which it was having in mobilising the party instead of taking part in the by-elections.
Dr Mumba said the party had decided to mobilise itself in readiness for 2016 general elections.
He said as far as he was concerned the party had not entered into any pact with the United Party for National Development (UPND) to campaign in Petauke Central and Malambo as alleged by the UPND.
He said Mr Mwanza and his group just took their personal decisions to back UPND candidates warning that he would instruct police officers to retrieve MMD vehicle from the group which had rebelled against him.
Dr Mumba said Mr Mwanza should understand that Eastern Province became more divided in the presidential election stating that it was now time for healing process.
Co PF president Rupiah Banda made suer that MMD does not take part.

Among the non contentious issues to be tabled in parley must incude a new submission which should be effected before the end of this year that any presidential aspiring candidate should have first served as a member of parliament atleast one term.
