Minister of Education Michael Kaingu has clarified that the recruitment of 5,000 teachers will be done at once and not in phases.

Dr. Kaingu dispelled media reports suggesting that his ministry will employ 5,000 in phases because of financial constraints.

He said his ministry was currently discussing with the Ministry of Finance over the provision of funds to employ the teachers before the end of this year.

He told ZANIS in Lusaka today that government was concerned about the shortage of teachers in some schools across the country.

Dr. Kaingu has meanwhile warned teachers against shunning working in rural areas.

He said government has put in place incentives pertaining to the teachers’ conditions of service in rural areas.

The minister further revealed that government was constructing 220 primary and 58 secondary schools across the country in the quest to attain the United Nations 2015 millennium development goal on universal primary education.

He added that his ministry was rehabilitating dilapidated schools so that the pupils can feel comfortable in class.
