t Edgar Lungu has called on traditional leaders to partner with government in protecting the girl child from negative vices that hinder their success in life.

ZANIS in Solwezi reports that President Lungu said today that traditional leaders should help fight early marriages and teenage pregnancies in their communities and encourage girl child education.

He said Zambia can only develop if the girl child is given the same opportunities as their male counterparts and that he was committed to bringing girls out of the oppression and suppression of society.

Mr Lungu who is on a working visit in the North Western province was speaking in Solwezi after touring the newly constructed Mushindamo Girls Technical Secondary School.

The President encouraged the girls and other women to get the inspiration from Vice President Inonge Wina and excel in whatever they are doing so that they can contribute to national development.

Mr Lungu said he will ensure that schools provide an enabling environment that encourages girls to be kept in learning institutions and get educated.

He pledged to alleviate the sufferings of the teachers and the pupils at Mushindamo Girls Secondary School by addressing some of the challenges the institution was facing such as lack of electricity and water.

Speaking earlier, Acting North Western Province Education Standards Officer Benson Kamangala pledged to work with the community in safeguarding the school for the benefit of the girl child.

Mushindamo Girls Technical Secondary School has been constructed at a cost of over K38.8 million and has a total enrolment of 195 pupils.

The completion of the school was scheduled for October 2010 but works are still on-going due to erratic funding.

  1. Was scheduled to open in 2010?? Who has been in power since… It is PF. Where is Mulusa to cry in his own village? Ma Jameson whiskey.

    • I thought PF only came into power in 2011? Clearly MMD failed to complete the project on schedule. Bitterness will not take you anywhere bwana.

  2. “Girl child success worries President Lungu”?

Interesting. The HEADLINE is clearly informing the reader Girl Child is successful, so successful that it is worrying President Lungu. So you momentarily think gosh!it has gone into overdrive.

But then, the BODY of the article is telling the reader Girl Child is struggling, so much so that President Lungu is worried.

Takes attention grabbing to a whole new level.

  3. As usual, trained-for-jobs orientation to reporting by LT journalists or their editors. The heading should have been more explicit: what is wrong with saying the LACK of Success for the girl child worries President Lungu? What is wrong with you guys!? Put a little passion in your work and you will see wonders. I miss Marta Paynter who would have been tearing your sorry little livers out of your miserable bodies every day! Might as well take up that role at the rate it is going.

  4. But iyi ni cut and paste Ba LT. Look at the start of the sentence in the first paragraph. It does not make sense to start with a small letter t.

  5. Like any civilized man I hail the under-dog and the disadvantaged. In this particular case however, I’m not convinced of ka Lungu’s motives. He’s such a crook and a front-man of the worst Zambia has to offer.
