POLICE in Lusaka have arrested Zambia’s Ambassador to Germany Bwalya Chiti’s wife Rosaria Vosa for allegedly attempting to murder the diplomat.
Mrs Chiti allegedly knocked down her husband with a vehicle after a marital dispute.
Lusaka Province commissioner of police Charity Katanga said in an interview yesterday that Mr Chiti was hit by a BMW registration number ALH 5121, which was being driven by Ms Vosa.
Ms Katanga said Mr Chiti is admitted to the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) after sustaining a deep cut on the head.
“We have a case of attempted murder which occurred on Thursday around 22:00 hours in which Bwalya Chiti of house number 5768 Kalundu Kabompo Street was hit.
“Mr Chiti, a Patriotic Front campaign manager, was hit by a motor vehicle, which was being driven by his wife,’’ Mrs Katanga said.
She said police have arrested Mrs Chiti and charged her with attempted murder.
She said police have detained Mrs Chiti.
Meanwhile, police have advised members of the public who will be travelling during the long weekend to abide by traffic rules and regulations.
Police spokesperson Charity Chanda said in a statement issued in Lusaka yesterday that traffic officers will be conducting snap checks.
“The snap checks will be conducted throughout the country to make sure there is compliance on the roads and clamp down on underage, unlicensed and drunken driving which of late has been on the increase,” he said.
Mrs Chanda said officers have been deployed to conduct both foot and motorised day and night patrols to maintain law and order.
She urged members of the public to report any suspicious-looking persons or perpetrators of any form of crime to police officers or the nearest police station.
“We are always ready to attend to any situation that may arise. Our desire is to see the nation enjoying an incident-free long weekend,’’ she said.
