The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting Services has called on law enforcement agencies to intensify the fight against piracy in Zambia.

Minister of Information Chishimba Kambwili said law enforcers should strengthen the fight against piracy especially in Lusaka and Copperbelt provinces where the scourge has proved to be rife.

He said this in a speech read on his behalf by his deputy Forrie Tembo during the Zambia Music Copyright Protection Society (ZAMCOPS) 15th Annual General Meeting in Lusaka today.

He also advised musicians to produce a lot of music to meet the high content demand that will arise as Zambia migrates from analogue to digital television broadcasting.

Mr. Kambwili added that musicians and other artists must take advantage of the digital migration and produce quality works which can sell to broadcasting houses.

The Minister has since acknowledged the importance which ZAMCOPS attaches to the role of promoting and protecting the music industry.

And ZAMCOPS Board Chairperson Edify Hamukale said the law enforcement on music piracy was not adequate to completely eradicate the vice.

Dr. Hamukale said this state of affairs was ZAMCOPS’ main frustration because its members and government were being robbed of significant income through piracy.

He has since requested government to consider introducing blank tape levy to control piracy through flash discs, DVDs and other recording devices.

He has meanwhile thanked ZAMCOPS members, government and other stakeholders for the continued support to its growth and to the development of the music industry in Zambia.

Dr. Hamukale said the music industry has potential to help reduce poverty and unemployment in the country and should thus be supported by all well-meaning Zambians.

  1. Why Kambwili wasn’t even there is because he attaches little importance to you musicians and the music industry’s plight. Piracy also involves clothing and other products so police need an anti piracy unit that can save the country money

  2. Kambwili you want to fight piracy so that the tax base can be increased to support your salary increment. It is a shame how all the law makers in this country are so insensitive to the suffering of the many Zambians. Right now graduate Teachers, Nurses, Pharmacists, Medical Doctors and other, they are not being employed by government yet you all MPs you have decided to accept increment for your allowances, what a shame.

  3. …Malupenga once castigated Miko Zulu as an embarrassment because miko talked ill of the hologram malupenga and the team brought in to curb piracy….miko and a few intelligent Zambians said it was just shear waste of money….hologram will not work in Zed….now miko has been vindicated…who is an embarrassment now..malupenga and the team…by da way how much was spent on hologram….those are the scams ACC are supposed to follow up without any complainant…..hologram is no different from…’ diesel from grass’… scam….

  4. …we have never been serious on this piracy fight….immediately u park your car in kapiri…u are greeted by a swam of boyz selling pirated CDs and the cops buy from them aswell….its matter of law enforcement agents rounding them up and interview them to obtain the source of the CDs…one will lead to the other…those boys may be 4th in line…..you have to start from somewhere…..first deal with the boys so that they wont agree to sell on behalf of the ‘dealers’…..and then go for the dealers…
