UNITED Party for National Development (UPND) vice-president Geoffrey Mwamba yesterday reportedly hurled tribal-laden invectives at Patriotic Front Mfuwe member of Parliament Mwimba Malama, sparking a near-punch-up at Parliament.

The Kasama MP threatened to beat up the Mfuwe MP and Chilubi MP (PF) Obvious Chisala, labelling them as people coming from small tribes which Bembas would finish politically.

The former Minister of Defence, who was appointed UPND vice-president in midweek and proclaimed that the party was not tribal, ‘fired’ at Mr Malama as he entered the restaurant during tea-break at about 10:30 hours.

Pointing at the Muchinga Province Minister, Mr Mwamba teased him, saying the suits he was wearing were because of him and that “I am coming into your constituency to finish you”.

He said Tabwas and Bisas are small tribes that cannot compete with Bembas. This forced Mr Malama and Mr Chisala to hit back, saying although Mr Mwamba was “fat like a bag of mealie meal”, he did not have the right and power to threaten and belittle others, especially on tribal lines.

Mr Mwamba gathered himself and charged at the two PF MPs, calling them poverty-stricken and that they would die poor.

“Get out…mwenchushi, mukafwa nobupina bwenu…get out…fumeni apa mwenchushi; loosely translated, “get out you poor people, you will die in poverty, get out of here”.

He also dragged late President Michael Sata’s name into the diatribe, saying, “why didn’t Sata appoint you as Defence minister?”

But the two MPs were unshaken as Mr Mwamba continued attacking them, bragging about his wealth.

Other MPs and security personnel stepped in to stop the fracas.

  1. This is typical of Bembas. They will call you batubulu if you come from Luapula but they will call you a Bemba when they want your vote.

    • @Retired Senior Engineer

I do not agree with you. Even people you call Bembas are a mixed and hybrid group if you look closely. You cannot say what GBM said is representative of all Bembas. I personally have no respect for GBM for trying to belittle other ethnic groups in Northern and Muchinga provinces. We have lived together in these two provinces for so many years without having to think of which tribe someone is. It just shows the low levels of reasoning in GBM to say what he said. I am half Bemba and half Lungu and cannot agree the slightest bit with GBM’s foolishness. He should be condemned by all Zambians whether Bemba or not.

    • According to the Post, GBM was quietly enjoying his tea during break time ku Parliament when Malamba charged in and rushed towards him screaming ‘tapali efyo uli iwe! You are not a factor! The source said if Mwamba had not acted in a respectable manner, there would have been chaos. Back in Parliament, Nkombo stood on a point of order and stated ‘Mr. Speaker, I rise on a serious point of order. Is the MP Malama who was the aggressor in the near punch up with GBM in order to charge towards a member who sat quietly enjoying his tea?”

    • Hahaha.. Ba Lusaka times have some integrity, but story sounds not true, even a neutral like my four year old son can not buy your version. Even if gbm is not the most upright man, there is no way he can just attack to two for no reason. There has to be something that triggered his attack which you should have investigated or report a one sided report.

    • I believe this is true & the so called small tribes (Namwanga, Ngumbo, Ushi, Tabwa, Bisa, Lungu, Mambwe & all tubulus) shud learn something. Bembas just need u for perpetuating tribal domination. Namwanga’s were beaten & their shops looted in Kasama in 2006 for voting Mwanawasa. Why try hard to be Bemba when ur not? Even Kambwili disowned Chama that after all he is just a Lala. Now we all know he is just a Lala trying hard to be Bemba. Real Bembas are “Bemba ‘Inkonko’” as Canisius Banda puts it. Others are just ‘UtuBembaBemba’ hiding in Bembaism cos they are ashamed to even speak their own languages.

    • Spot on Retired Engineer. Northern, Luapula and Muchinga have lived in harmony for ages unknown. I guess GBM is trying to divide these groups so he can enter, however this particular incident is typically one to help him.

The language of politics which make people utter phrases to justify they either educated or rich or a better tribe or creed or race or whatever is a sign of desperation. This is while they make spelling mistakes or have a history of dishonesty and many other adverse errors which negatively unjustify their claims.

Zambians are not ashamed to admit their inadequacies and it is by far not a weakness. I met a colleague I work with- who was praising a Willard from Zambia who lecturers consulted in their Masters Class. The Willard completed and returned to Zambia.

    • @Zedoch. It is not nice to talk ill of the dead but we cannot run away from history just like Obama talked about his granny being documented as a cook and a boy. The late Kapwepwe publicly referred to people from Luapula as batubulu ba munyela pa menshi as if people in the air tabanyela mu mwela. And yet when he resigned from UNIP he stood in Mufulira West where he was elected by people of predominantly Luapulan stock without even campaigning because KK prevented him. GBM will not be of much use to UPND if he only relies from Bembas from Kasama and Chinsali so-called ababemba nkonko. Earlier, an Alliance between the Tongas and Bembas resulted in Kapwepwe defeating Kamanga and the Easterners were so bitter that they wanted to secede. “Kumodzi kumawa” or something like that they chanted.

  2. An uneducated fat Donald Trump. “I am rich, everybody likes me…..” He has no political acumen or fiscal sense smhh

  3. “When ignorance gets started it knows no bounds” Will Rogers
“If you think education is expensive, try ignorance” Derek Bok

    • This is story only covers one side. The truth is that GBM was sitted when thses two guys entered and pocked some fun on him saying ba UPND vice president and loughing at him .That’s when GBM also hit back. Its not GBM who started the fight. Please report correctly.

  4. If this is the side of the story that is true then GBM should get down & apologise. This was uncouth & uncalled for.
If he said this to Mwimba, he will do the same to Garry or Cornelius.
If this is true then GBM needs HELP.

  5. …the title…’details….’…is misleading…the story is half baked…we are not being told what the other two MPs said or did to provoke GBM….this article shares with us only half of what could have happened…so its not detailed…it looks like GBM was reacting to something which the other two said or did….lets have those details before we make any conclusions…..

  6. Who to believe? According to the Post, GBM was quietly enjoying his tea during break time ku Parliament when Malamba charged in and rushed towards him screaming ‘tapali efyo uli iwe! You are not a factor! The source said if Mwamba had not acted in a respectable manner, there would have been chaos. Back in Parliament, Nkombo stood on a point of order and stated ‘Mr. Speaker, I rise on a serious point of order. Is the MP Malama who was the aggressor in the near punch up with GBM in order to charge towards a member who sat quietly enjoying his tea?” Thats the other story so who to believe?

    • I think UPND know exactly what they are getting. You don’t go to bed with GBM for his fit look or wisdom. UPND needed some Bemba kaponya mentality, the type that allows GBM to insult other people from his region in this fashion. If any Tonga or Lozi said anything close to what GBM said, you would never hear the end of it from Bembas. They would even claim that UPND will not be getting their tribal votes, as if their votes were ever available. GBM will bring gusto and vitality to the way UPND portrays itself, without Tongas being blamed for being difficult.

  7. The tabwa, guy,,,,,,,he is what was wrong with that?is he not a tabwa?mwimba u should proud of being a tabwa okay lawmaker!

    • Tabwas, Lalas, Bisas, Aushis etc like passing themselves off as Bembas. They also very pompousily impose their “Bemba” asses on everybody else, the way Dickhead Tribal Chama has done. Is it safety in numbers? Or lack of confidence in their ethnic identity? Only a real Bemba like GBM can call their bluff, and it clearly hurts.

  8. Chest-thumbing GBM, remember that pride comes before a fall. Africans seek political offices to enrich themselves. None of them is interested in serving the people. Thats why Africa will ever remain backwards. Pathetic!

    • You should have told PF that or they not in power and enjoying the resources of Zambia. gBM has make his money outside government so why are you referring that to him, and he is not even in government . Misplaced advice???

    • You should have told PF that or they not in power and enjoying the resources of Zambia. gBM has make his money outside government so why are you referring that to him, and he is not even in government . Misplaced advice???

  9. GBM please own up.My humble advice to you is that learn to humble yourself. You are ill-mannered and not cultured. It is unzambian and unafrican for anyone to tell others that they are poor and they will never be rich in life. Are the Creator to determine the future of anybody?Galu iwe Remember the story of the foolish rich man in the bible he was very excited with his wealth and he was not prepared he lived a sinful life and God said to him today I want your life.So that’s exactly you gbm.

  10. Please, stop making a big story out of this rhetoric. This is normal among any group of dialects belonging to a tribe.

They can tease each other and one another to bits. To make it a point for discussion in parly is to belittle the role of the office.

This pumping talk should have been left in the cafe where it belonged.

Please MPs need to discuss pertinent issues affecting the electrolate such as the Constitutions, poor drainage and power cuts…

  11. Is upnd a tribal party?

Northerners the carpet has been swept under your feet….from now on GBM may end up as UPND President! What now happens to your tribal-regional party narrative ???

I notice the new spin from Lungu that UPND is a party led by rich men lying that he is poor!!! Lord of mercy….wenye aLungu.

    • Sharing your thought on the latest lines of attack by Lungu on UPND as a party for rich people and elitists, inwardly he is also hurting that we recall Sata saying all his ministers were…………..the statement included Lungu who is in a hurry to amass wealth for himself through holding on to the defense portfolio and multiple foreign trips. How I wish my motherland Zambia had serious checks and balances like the country I now reside where accountability on public expenditure is serious matter! Lungu’s travel costs would have been laid bare against benefit to the country!

PF is for those in a hurry to get rich quickly from leadership. Personally I’d prefer a leader who has made riches already pantu aliyipangila kale umwine iyakumushikila and ukwiba team yakwe kuti ilatina.

  12. What people must understand is that even fools can have money, but it takes an intelligent person to realize that we cannot all be at the same level. Without the others who work tirelessly for GBM, I wonder how he could have made the bucks he’s bragging about.
It was just yesterday when I wrote that UPND should watch him. He is capable of slapping the president in the face especially when he is denied his wish. Those that have been close and under him, they will tell you that he never thinks that an employee could ever be right and that his solution to any problem is beating/ slapping the junior.

  13. Typical PF, trying to stir up tribal hatred! PF is the most hypocritical tribal party Zambia has ever had. The promote tribalism and try to blame it on others.

    • What about the party Upnd where you can only be its president if you are Tonga. Let us be honest.

  14. Being rich without brains is dangerous and Zambians are watching.Small tribal parties with leaders who are tribal will never see state house no matter how much they will try to disguise themselves.

  15. Look you people. We have enough problems already, and all you can do is use my tax to meet anquarel over useless things instead of looking at what will help Zambia? How can being bemba or Tabwa or any tribe help to put food on my table? or improve on load shading? When will Zambians learn to put the right people in parliament? Surely we dont need such human beings, do we?

  16. So no one decided to walk away? Fred trying so hard to launder GBM after painting him black. We know the enemy of your enemy is your friend. No principles, no ethics ba Post. Shame

    • @no wonder you are now despising the post newspaper which propelled pf into government by landing the late despot sata.

    • @no wonder you are now despising the post newspaper which propelled pf into government by launding the late despot sata.

  17. Watch out Tongas of UPND. If this history illiterate can insult his brothers( both are Bisa, one from Mpika and the other from Chilubi), what will he say about Tongas when the going gets tough for him in UPND?

  18. GBM has finished up himself ! You leave your own Party and defect just to be called Veep ? In my view,he has misfired and he is headed for a big loss.People will just chew his money.

  19. Did I not say from the confort of my armchair that these guys would be putting up a show so that Zambians would be involved in this nosense why everything else has gone to the dogs? The only thing predicted truly was the no vision issue. We really cannot see due to loadshedding.

  20. This story sounds like damage control by the uncouth panga family, you will hear mr speaker reprimand the pf fools.

  21. I say good riddance.
GBM will eventually be a liability and an embarrassment to Upnd as the anticipated Bemba vote fails to materialise.

  22. Elo lwanya nomba, ba GBM Vice President of a sane and self respecting party? Nana HH ati I have made the right choice? That is how parties finish ifi fine.

  23. Zambian politics, no wonder the country is not growing. Anyway, sitting on my chair laughing my ass out with my popcorn and soda as I continue to watch more comedy unfold. Hahahaha, they call themselves leaders by the way

  24. Looking at most of the comments, most of us easily believe unsupported assertions. We display lack of skepticism. This is not healthy at all. This story comes from Zambia Reports. This is not true as ZR points out that the information is not verifiable. Why should one trust this source of information if it cannot be verified? Why should also publish something based on unverifiable information? Hence, the story lacks credibility and worthiness. Can this claim be confirmed? I think, as Zambians, we need to evaluate the credibility of the source of the claim before we can trust whatever we read. This means we need to be truth seekers, and cultivate a sense of healthy skepticism. We should not always trust everything that anyone might tell us. We need not to be cynical.

    • If they give up their source then they stop being credible site; it is better for those who were involved to bring out the actual story, that is the only ”verifiable information” we could have.

    • Truth will be known and this publication is trying to get the truth to us and must commended for that. The sequence of events here to me sound ‘very’ real ; although people will still be open to more revelation.

Lusaka Times has the credibility as a balanced news source in the way they bring their news to us. As a credible source of news you are aware other people are publishing the same story you are publishing and the difference between yours and others is the basis of your credibility. There is no defence for either party in publishing this story. The nation deserves to know the truth as we have two very popular parties with daggers drawn here.
