FDD President Edith Nawakwi says she has been moved by the alarming poverty levels in Luapula Province.Ms Nawakwi said that she gets annoyed when she sees such high levels of poverty while Government is misusing resources on what she termed rubbish things.

Speaking in Bangweulu Constituency where she is on a campaign trail for the party candidate Robby Mwansa in the forth coming by-election, Ms. Nawakwi said the PF have been telling people that they are developing the country when in fact the opposite is happening on the ground.

“I get so annoyed when I move around in rural areas and see this appalling poverty levels in the country especially in rural areas while Government officials continue to misuse state resources by buying rubbish oil and other useless things. We are here in Bangweulu Constituency and this Government decides to start grading roads which you don’t even need at the moment because what I see here is that you definitely don’t need roads but what you need is food, what you need is clinics because you can’t call what you are using a clinic. I am from checking your school and the teachers don’t even have accommodation. You built those small houses for teachers but the teachers in the area are not even getting help from Government because they have been fooled. These are the important things your Government should be bringing instead bribing voters. In any case by grading these roads while you are hungry they are telling that they don’t know what your challenges are.”

Ms. Nawakwi who camped at headman Kapaka’s village wondered how the people are surviving because there is no sign of any economic activities in the area.

“I wonder how you are surviving in this area because there is no sign of any economic activity anywhere. Everywhere I have visited the story is the same, you cannot even see a chicken in villages, no goats nothing! I spent a night at headman Kapaka’s village and I met a woman who has a tooth ache which has turned septic because she doesn’t have money to go to Samfya General Hospital where she has been told to go.”

And the opposition leader also bemoaned the high number of teenage mothers in the district saying it is not healthy for children to be having babies.

“I was at Kaishe where I took a ten day old baby to the under five clinic for the first time because the mother is too young to understand anything about motherhood and the baby is not gaining weight because the mother is not producing milk.It is not healthy for children to be having babies because their bodies are not ready to start having children and the reasons for this unfortunate situation in communities is because of poverty and lack of recreational activities for these teenagers. Instead of grading roads for your votes these are the things which the President and his Government should be looking into not doing roads where people need food, schools and health facilities.

I have seen many mothers trying to build a community clinic by themselves and I told them that I will not hesitate to support them by bringing them 200 bags of cement, window frames and roofing sheets once this by election is over. I know someone will say am trying to buy votes but tell them to also build houses for teachers because I have seen that they don’t have accommodation. Moreover the Government has brought graders to try and buy your votes by grading your roads.” Ms. Nawakwi said.

She further called on the people in the constituency to challenge President Edgar Lungu and his Government to show them the development they have been preaching about because as far as she is concerned there is no sign of development to write home about in the entire province adding that all she can see is impoverished communities deprived of the little resources there is in the country.

    • during ba kaunda,, luapula used to be a land of plenty,,,,, chilemba and fish used to in constant supply to the extent that chilemba was blamed for people in luapula becoming mpofu,,,

    • This story was hidden and makes sad reading; it as if these people are not in Zambia. The late area member of parliament seemed not to have understood his job discription.

    • Ba Nawakwi, rubb1sh is when Zambia paid more than $4m for maize which was not delivered under the Carlington maize deal when you were Minister of Agriculture,Food & Fisheries and when millions of dollars where transferred to the Zamtrop account at ZANACO bank in London when you were Minister of Finance…. and it annoys some of us that up to now you have failed to account for that money.

    • This situation gentlemen politics aside annoys me. In a land of plenty people are suffering like this. Zambians woke the real enemy are not the Tongas or Bembas or any tribe but are the PF thieves hiding behind the veil of Tribalism. They use tribe to get state house while their true objective is to amass wealth for themselves and their children and not the poor Zambians. When I cut the blood of the people in luapula is similar to mine from southern, I can not feel happy with this level of poverty. Zambians lets remove this PF animal enough is enough.

    • @Ndobo, I simply want to appoint you as minister of Luapula province. All what you said is correct. It is shame that now the province is only supplying babies. And what are condoms for kanshi?

    • These same people gave over 90% of their vote to Lungu in January 2015. This is the most PFoolish Province in Zambia. Let them eat their ifintu ni Lungu.

    • I guess Ms Nawakwi is the one complaining not the local people. The local people voted for PF and they will still do because they understand the PF slogan : Don’t kubeba, wilalilalila ashi!

  1. am not pf but ba mayo ba nawakwi you had a chance and some of these problems where caused by you what difference is there you were once minister of finance, you a trendsetter mayo things are continuing the way you created even zra its because of your greediness thats its most corrupted,

    • Talk about what the government is doing or has done. It is sad to look at the pics. This is how Zambia is.

  2. Luapula like any other part of Zambia has both rich and poor areas. For example my village in Mambilima almost every house is iron roofed and electrified. As for fish, blame it on the people because of their indiscriminate fishing methods. My grandfather told me that in colonial days catching small fish attracted long jail terms but all this changed at independence. Edith was in government and as such she knows that not all corners have been visited by ministers.

  3. What did you do about it when you served as Minister of Finance and Minister of Agriculture, Food and Fisheries under the Chiluba regime?

  4. Nawakwi plz stop fooling luapula people wen u know that u also contributed to the poverty u are bemoaning now…! Pf inherited that poverty from u and measures are in place to control wat u caused wen u were in govt…! Cheap politics at its best….! Shame on u!

  5. On the case of healthcare, we have Mobile Clinics on wheels. How are they being used? There definitely has to be a way of reaching people in remote areas. Our established, and experienced doctors in private sector, must lend a hand to uplift the lives of people in rural areas by offering free medical service occasionally. If there is an established association of medical doctors in the country, this is something they must be doing. Coupled to this, there should be support from private business operators and industry to fund the exercise. We should not only rely on the government to do some of these things. We have to be proactive and do what is right for mankind. One Zambia One Nation.

  6. Madam, you are insulting our intelligence. You have served in government before, what did you do for the people of Luapula? Ba LT ,it is “tooth ache”

  7. Zambians will defend r u b b i s h for the sake of their bellies. Just check what the bloggers above are saying. You Zambians, it is time to face reality!

  8. Nawakwi was Finance minister during the chiluba regime. What did she do to reduce the poverty levels? It seems most politician have short memories!

    • Bafikala stop shifting blame on Nawakwi that’s history ,the question now is what should we do now? If PF failed also what do we do? Enough is enough we youths of now days we should fight for economic independence. Abash tribalism gimmick. One Zambia one nation.

  9. The problem with my sister Nawakwi is the “lack of thinking before she talks”. She blames the government for every bad situation she sees. This is a very serious disease not only to Nawakwi but to many Africans particularly some Zambians in this case Nawakwi. She is a type who will blame the pot if she is cooking and burns food. She would not blame herself for forgetting that she was chatting for long before she could check the pot on fire.
Sometimes I think she suffers from a disease called “Fright”. The moment she sees anything bad she is frightened and therefore stop thinking and starts hallucinating by blaming others instead of at least cry a bit to reduce stress. There are officers that cry a bit before they talk whenever they come across a sad situation. This is the most…

    • Continued…..

This is the most normal action to take though the Press may misinterpret the crying. Crying reduces shock, stress and normalises the brain to start thinking from its basic. That’s why smokers many times will not make a statement before he or she smoke. Maybe Nawakwi starts to go this line and leave hh and Mulongoti in this blaming propaganda.

I do appreciate the action she took by giving a chitenge material to that family though. This is how it is done….not blaming the government all the time.

      Thanx

  10. This husband snatcher talks like she is perfect. She abused her office when she was Minister of Finance by not paying for items she got on credit until when she was threatened with court action.

  11. POLITICIANS ARE CROWDED IN LUSAKA THERE ONLY TO FEED THEMSELVES. WE THE VOTERS ARE ONLY USED AS PONIES DURING ELECTIONS FOR THEM TO ASCEND INTO POWER. THERE IS NEED FOR TOTAL OVERHAUL OF THE POLITICAL LANDSCAPE OF ZAMBIA. MOST OF THESE THIEVES IN POLITICS NEED TO BE PURGED OUT OF THE POLITICAL SYSTEM. MOST OF OUR ZAMBIAN POLITICIANS ARE THIEVES, AND CAN NEVER BE TRUSTED DESPITE THEIR SUGAR-COATED PUBLIC REMARKS AND STATEMENTS THEY MAKE. A FROG WILL ALWAYS REMAIN A FROG, WHETHER IN FDD, OR IN PF OR IN UPND. ZAMBIAN POLITICIANS ARE A BUNCH OF LAIRS.

  12. @ISO just my thought as well, typical of diabolical Pathetic PF illiterates! We need development, not staticism! In any case, Luapula Province voters just like voters from Muchinga & Northern as well as Copperbelt Provinces are never poor, never experiencing social economic miseries, they are thought to be content with their tribal voting for visionless, corrupt, liars & ruthless cruel thieves bunch of ex-convicts & mercenary mafias masquerading as Leaders!Let them keep shouting fintu nilungu & pabwato pabwato as this seems to be their only desire & inspiration!I cannot imagine/envisage life without an animal, not even a chicken-no wonder they call other poorer but very self reliant, resilient, proactive, rational & progressive( tongas) as Bakachema or worse off than a chicken(dandy crazy)!Let them…

  13. Nawakwi left government a long time ago before 2001.now hw many years passed?you can blame her bt lets face the reality.Sata was MMD he was part of those guys who messed us.and here is EL messing us up with his cronies. Its time zambians used their brains and not their eyes. These leaders should be made responsible and account for their actions. There is no way will be listening to the blame games everytime.Sata came out of MMD,started blaming MMD and he rode on that and zambians forgot and voted for him.zambians are just dull

    • Yes, SATA was in a better position to do the best since he had the experience and power. But , the thug as usual just brought division, hate-speech, debt burden etc.

      Nawakwi speaking sense.

  14. Nawakwi must ask these rich Northerners as to ‘fintu ninani-& their pabwato pabwato if at all they are enjoying!Let them continue voting for PF forever & they shall surely develop!

  15. Illiteracy, ubututu, ignorance, and their offshoots are the main problems in some of these areas. Build schools and teachers houses and provide bursaries for children from these areas, that will allow them to get educated and see things from a different perspective.

At the moment, most people in those villages are illiterates, they ended in grade 0 class, 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 at most. Not to seem to blame them entirely, let me be politically correct by stating that there are no lucrative economic activities to make them earn enough to prioritise education. For them it is survival, by means best they know, ukulima tute, imbalala, chilemba and so on. Few try maize which depends on FISP.

Fish is no longer there. I always say we need to industrialise so that some of them can even work as…

  16. Nawakwi only ever get moved by poverty when the Election Hastings are imminent.

Can you please advise us Ms Nawakwi why the ‘few’ Members your Party has in Parliament, have never called for a discussion on the poverty in this Provence, (a major one to win)?

People of Luapula, she is as guilty for your Poverty because she turned a blind eye when things were going badly for you. Do not take to heart these type of Politicians, especially this overly intelligent ‘Doily knitting’ woman. That’s all she does I between elections …knit doily sot cover her toilet roll, her teapot….etc. Now it is evident, she has discovered a larger pattern than can fit the purpose of COVERING YOUR EYES. You are being HOODWINKED by a callous woman who sat around while things got worse…

    • Autocorrect is really efficient today.

  17. Actually Samfya district has three constituencies namely Bangweulu, Luapula and Chifunabuli. These areas have prospects for hydrocarbon gases and oil.

When you are moving to Lunga district when the water levels are low, there are a lot of bubbles popping out of the marsh and silt of the swamps.

Some scientist take some interest in that area and check out the better potential it holds other than tuma small fish and baby fish being plundered.

  18. I am soooooo annoyed by Nawakwi’s attempt at causing dissent in our country and gov’t.

S.illy Nawakwi, has been criticising over expenditure, over borrowing on loans for development.

NOW SHE SAYS there is not enough development in that region? What of others? Surely if we were to build all those clinics in each region, we would NEED to borrow. It seems all Party’s in Zambia Understand the urgent need for development and yet spend all their time at once criticising borrowing and then flipping over to criticise underspending.

    • Please, hold your breath. The money the government borrows is not properly utilized. It is spent on other things rather than on the projects you allude to. How big is the Zambian government with limited resources? How many trips does Lungu undertake? You should give credit to Nawakwi for highlighting the extent of poverty and underdevelopment in Zambia.

  19. It takes a sharp woman’s eye to name the reality on the ground. Whether the electorates see it that way is another question.

Luapula, like the rest of Zambia is rich in resources, but the lack of knowledge to go beyond human reproduction is our handicap.

Empowerment of Chiefs and Headmen/women should be your first target Mama Nawakwi. Get them on board, you might get somewhere.

  20. …Nawakwi lives in Lusaka…does she need to go that far to notice poverty levels..??…recently Chawama had by elections and the verdict was made….let her go their and see if there will be any difference to what she saw in Luapula…

  21. To be very honest the very high poverty levels we are seeing in Zambia have their offshoots in the Structural Adjustment Programmes Dr. Kaunda initially embraced and then later abandoned and were then implemented full throttle by Chiluba’s MMD government in which Nawakwi served as Mininster of Energy, Agriculture and Finance. She is one of the chief architects of the poverty most Zambians find themselves in and should be guilty about this and not just play politics.

  22. So Nawakwi was giving her party Chitenge to this man to replace the dirty PF Chitenge as shown on the picture. She should also have given him money for boom, or boom to use when washing them. The woman is really mean!

  23. You may vehemently disagree with Ms E. Nawakwi about what she is saying, BUT you may not refute the message in the accompanying photos in this story. Given a choice between Nawakwi and any average PF MP, the choice to me on any average day is clearly Nawakwi. Granted some of you are so highly demented ans sucked up into PF mendacity, that you refuse to see the rampaging and marauding poverty all the way from Nawaitwika to Namitome and Kasaya to Nakonde, if you even know what I’m sayin’ uhm!

  24. I think politicians have Neva spoken the truth, pipo are cheated every now and then about poverty this poverty that. U evil pipo politician’s tel the people to workhad and their hardwork will pay them. Zambians shall remain poor as long as they wait for politicians to change things go them. How do u expect poverty to go wen pipo a doing less to uplift their lives but continue relying on politicians to do so. The Bible says u will sweat to see good things. No human being will do or rule perfectly well, The Bible blue says man fail to lead his feet how do u except him to lead others. Man will only try and his rule will still lack.

  25. Nawakwi, please we are not fools. When were you last in Luapula Province and more so to other Provinces if you cared about the plight of our people? Actually you very lucky that you are not in jail because you STOLE $4 million maize money.
Nawakwi, let me tell you today, you served as Finance, Agriculture, Energy and Labour Minister and God knows what made you get these important positions and can YOU HOESTLY point at one thing you did to develop Zambia and reduce the poverty we are witnessing today?

Its now almost 23 years since you plundered the resources of Zambia and you want to play on the ignorance of those who were not born by then? You are a total failure iwe and you like GBM and HH are thieves. You also stole someone’s husband living that family broken and in tears sh1t!!!!.

    • Be civil! Advance your arguments rather than telling lies. People who fail to reason resort to insult, lies, and etc. just to avoid the issue at hand. Argumentation requires one to offer adequate and sound reasons to defend their position.

  26. This Nawakwi prostitute served as Minister at one time and today she wants to pretend about the messy she left behind.

  27. She is a hipocrite. She was once MP for Nakonde and poverty levels are equally alarming. That is her own village!!!.She is just teasing and mocking the innocent villagers and try to user their plight for political gains. Can she even remeber these people when she gets to power.Useless woman!!

  28. Nawakwi has just opened our eyes, no one has ever, shown pictures what is happening on the ground. I hear, Ba veep and big entrouge were campaigning in the area and Busy bringing the graders, who are they cheating? Yet
The people are looking for food, go Nawakwi , good job indeed
