THE Nsenga Cultural Association says the remarks by Paramount Chief Kalonga Gawa Undi of the Chewa people during the just-ended Kulamba traditional ceremony as totally misleading, false and misplaced to the nation.

Gawa Undi said through David Phiri that he was troubled that despite the Supreme Court ruling, the Government decided to degazette the rightful Senior Chief Kalindawalo.

The Chewa paramount chief said the rightful Senior Chief Kalindawalo should be installed.
But Senior Chief Kalindawalo Senior Induna Justin Mumba, Nsenga Cultural Executive Members Emmanuel Tembo and Moses Mwale said the statement by Chief Gawa Undi was totally misleading, false and misplaced to the nation and a recipe for anarchy.

“As Nsengas, we feel insulted by a traditional leader from a neighbouring tribe. We would also like to put it on record that there is no traceable historical link between the Nsengas and the Chewas. There is a marked difference in the language, traditional practices and culture between the two tribes,” they stated.

They explained that Chief GawaUndi has no right whatsoever in the affairs of the Nsenga people.

They stated that the the ultimate authority of the Nsenga people was Senior Chief Kalindawalo based in Petauke District at Kaulu palace which has been his Headquarters from the time the chiefdom was created.

“The Supreme Court Judgment referred to, has been misinterpreted to deliberately mislead the nation. The Supreme Court Judgment which Chief Gawa Undi referred to has been superseded by the recent judgment which ordered the Chewas not to meddle into Nsenga affairs,” the statement reads in part.

They expressed sadness the actions by the Chewas to fight with the Ngonis and also the Chewas.

They stated that the Chief Kalindawalo throne was long settled and there was no need to open further discussion.

They said that the current Senior Chief Kalindawalo was the legitimate one and the rightful heir to the throne.

“We therefore advise Chief GawaUndi to direct his effort to the many problems the Chewa people are facing in his domain,”he said.

They stated that the all the ten Nsenga chiefs and their Subjects were happy with the leadership of the current Chief Kalindawalo.

They commended Patriotic Front (PF) Government for bringing peace and tranquility to Nsengaland through the current Senior Chief Kalindawalo stating that they were focusing on the development of the Nsengaland.

  1. This culture of powerful chiefs/chiefdom in this digitai era when the modern world is turning into a global village still beats my understanding. I do not wish to condemn retaining chieftaincy cultures but according to modern standards as the world is moving fast. At the same time, I wish to tender my earliest apologies for any misinterpretation.

  2. This heat being felt by the Nsenga people is also the same oppression the Nkoya and other tribes under going through by the tyrant Baluyi (Lozis) in western province. It is indeed painful and insulting to belittled by a neighbouring tribe.I feel in this modern world its high time we changed this kind of behaviour.

  4. As a mbewa eating Nsenga from Chief Mumbi , Kasonde village and my family homestead next to Ongolwe hill, on the zambia/mozambia watershed plateau, married from chief mwanjawathu. I have NO links to these nyau dancing chewas and would be right 2 think much nyau dancing is causing these chewas stupidity….uyu chief ni silu…kuipa monga kolwe

  5. The main issue is that the government’s system recognises Paramount Chief GAWA UNDI to be the supreme ruler of the Nsenga people. Gawa Undi has powers to oversee any wrangle the nsenga People may face. I believe is wrong.
The nsengas must be aotonomous as the are many Nsengas in Eastern province than the chewas

  6. It is very disheartening to see people deliberately ignoring facts..The so-called indunas of Senior Kalindawalo both have Chewa names yet claim to be completely independent of the chewas..How come they are Mr Tembo and Mr Mwale? Are these nsenga names?
