The opposition United Party for National Development (UPND) has hinted that it plans to shun this year’s 51st independence celebrations in protest at the current economic hardships Zambians are facing.

The opposition political party feels it does not make sense to wine and dine at State functions when a majority of the people in the country are struggling to survive.

UPND Deputy Spokesperson Edwin Lifwekelo has told QFM News via telephone that the party will instead engage in charity work by making donations of various goods to the underprivileged in society.

Mr. Lifwekelo says while 24th October is an important day for all Zambians, the PF has diluted the essence of celebrating it.

Meanwhile, Every Home for Christ Regional Director Richard Kakuwa says there is no need for politicians to shun Independence Day celebrations because 24th October is a national day and not a PF event.

Bishop Dr. Kakuwa says this is the time for all Zambians to show each other love.

He says the government has even done well to come up with a theme that is encouraging Zambians despite their political affiliation to reconcile and open new chapters in life.

    • Lets donate food for the man in the photo whoever it is he looks emaciated. Its tough to be in the opposition especially perpetually.

  1. Don’t blame the UPND. The PF never attended any state functions when they were in the opposition. So stop being hypocritical. The UPND as a party have their own reasons for boycotting the independence celebrations and they must be respected. The PF cannot pretend that they are promoting unity because those that were in government when the PF were in the opposition used the same message but the PF never took heed. So this time, just accept that others don’t want to associate with you because of your mediocrity. We know that times like these are for looting because those charged with the responsibility of organising the event really steal.

  2. Ba UPND be aware that you will get a taste of your own medicine when you come to power in 2021 – the Rainbow Party will be doing the same to you since PF will be finished.

  3. But it is ok for the same UPND to ask the same suffering Zambians to donate ‘campaign’ funds to an account held in HH’s name?

    • Hypocrites, hypocrites, hypocrites! They have no shame at all! They have on their website a request for people to willingly donate to their cause of putting HH into state house, the same suffering people but they will rather not celebrate independence. I wish UPND could be in power just for a year to see how they would change this country. Unfortunately we have to wait for either 2016 or 2021!
As far as I am concerned I will celebrate the liberty I have to do business in this country in any sector I so chose, to drive anywhere, sing a song if I am drunk and just have a country I can call my own without some funny person discriminating against me. So, all the party poopers, stay away!

  4. Is that news naimwe ba UPND? Since when did you attend a state function? What would be news is if you attended.
Given that we are a developing country, it will take a long long time before the needs of all citizens are addressed. In other words, poverty will be with us for a long long time to come. Therefore in the unlikely remote event that UPND comes to power in 2021, does this mean that under a UPND government no independence celebrations will be allowed? Maybe under five may even stop celebrating his birthday until he can feed all poor citizens, right?

But on a serious note, UPND should be careful what it says for some of the things they say or do are ridiculous. E.g. last year HH spend independence day donating mealie meal to poor people, why remember poor people only on…

  5. Politics of boycotts leads to nowhere and we need to move away from there quickly.

There will always be a good reason to stay away from state functions and if PF did
the same when in opposition, show them you are different!

  6. UPND will never stop amazing me. Last week they were asking for donations now next month they want to donate. Who needs donations here? Also which national function has UPND ever taken part for them to say that they are boycotting? The are always boycotting and functions has been going on smoothly. When will they realize that they do not exist.

  7. I feel pity for HH and UPND. They boycott everything that Zambians do. They appeal to the people not to attend national functions but their appeal has always fallen on deaf ears. Are they not making themselves irrelevant to the nation. Please ba UPND emancipate yourselves from the shell of self deception and show patriotism then Zambians can vote for you, otherwise be ready to rot in opposition.
