The Zambia Police Service has announced an upwards adjustment in all its fees and fines including traffic fines.

Police Spokesperson Charity Munganga-Chanda in a statement to QFM News said this is in accordance with the provisions of Statutory Instrument No.41 of July 2015 of the Fees and Fines Act, which increased the value of the Penalty Units from 20 ngwee to 30 ngwee per Penalty Unit.

Ms Chanda explained that the adjustment in all the fees and fines does not only cover traffic fines but all the services that need members of the general public to pay for in government departments which include the Zambia Police Service.

She added that other services whose fees have been increased include Police and Interpol Clearance Certificates.

    • You want my car to be in a good state of repair, make sure our roads are good and safe to drive on too.

Its also acceptable in Zambia to use leaves and branches in place of reflective triangles. This is shameful and the police including the IG just look away.

I would also like to see all broken down vehicles tolled off/away from roads to make roads safe and allow traffice to flow

    • The Police do not enact the laws, that is the business of Parliament and the reason the changes are stated in a Statatutory Instrumemt. The Police only polices and enforces. Wrong heading Lusaka Times.

  1. Let payments be done thru the banks and not by road side,to avoid the obvious. The intention is good if it is meant to protect road users, but, pa zed I fear what will happen over the weekend, we wait and see.

    • you are wasting your time. What they would do if all payments were to be made thru the banks is merely to delay you at a road block so that you are tempted to bribe them.I have personally tried to avoid corruption but you find that they will delay you if you ask to pay the prescribed fee hoping to make you fall into bribing them so that you leave early.

  2. This is not News. It is half baked News. Cant you tell us the increases in all their comprehensiveness? Otherwise dont tell us anything. You even have a picture of the speaker but according to your story she is saying nothing

  3. I’ve just watched Munganga, she was smiling for most of her briefing.
Fees have never been a deterrent (esp these small fees). A bus operator will factor them into his costs & increase the “taking”.
Defective vehicles & bad drivers should be taken off the road.

  4. It’s alright everybody can now revise their fees for services and sales, I guess the reasons why every one else is doing it are the same all round!

  5. The police who is charging you will always tell you that it is cheaper if you don’t demand a receipt. Therefore the increment simply promotes corruption.

  6. In a normal country, the higher the fines, the more people comply with the law, apart from Govt collecting more money. In our case, the higher the fines, it is questionable if Govt will collect more, or if there will be a decrease in misdemeanors.
