Athletics great Samuel Matete has announced that his organisation Sports for Youth has partnered with the Zambian Cancer Society to stage a cancer awareness run in Kitwe next month.

Matete, the director of Sports for Youth, said the 21km, 10km and 5km race will be held on October 10 at Lechwe School.

“As Sports for Youth we have teamed up with members of the Zambian Cancer Society in Kitwe to create awareness on cancer through sport.
You know that Cancer is on the rise in our nation,” Matete said in Kitwe on Friday.

“We feel that cancer is one of the many issues affecting our communities that needs to be addressed,” the former 400m hurdles World champion said.

Matete last month staged a marathon dubbed health and fitness run in Kitwe that received overwhelming support from athletics enthusiasts in the city.

“We are not ending here because as you know Sports for Youth wants to promote sports among young people in low income communities in Kitwe and beyond,” he added.

During his hey days, Matete won a gold medal at the 1991 World Championships and was twice silver medalist at the same event.

He was three-time World Cup winner and won gold at the 1994 Commonwealth Games.

Matete later won a silver medal at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta in what still is Zambia’s last medal at the World biggest showpiece
event.
