RESIDENTS of Lusaka have expressed concerns at increasing insecurity in the capital city and called on the police to increase patrols to stop attacks on innocent people.

Suspected criminals have for a long time been hiding and attacking people at foot and fly over bridges in the capital city with limited efforts by the police to stop the crime.

Last week Times of Zambia reporter James Kunda was attacked at the fly over bridge on the Great East Road where the assailants went away with his cell phone and a wallet.

“It is a shame that this has been going on for a long time and the police are just watching. As far as am concerned, it is not difficult to stop this nonsense; it is only that the police are not interested,” Matilda Banda a resident of Villa Elizabetha said.

Ms Banda accused the police of concentrating their efforts on cases where there were chances of them being bribed by offenders.

“Look at the effort that goes to mini buses; they are always on the road but people are being attacked without any serious intervention from the police,” she said.

Joseph Malembeka another resident said the fly over bridges on the Great East Road and Church Road had been a den for criminals for a long time.

“But what is shocking is that no solution has been found and yet people are being attacked every day. We need to have serious measures from the police, if it means camping there to see who is attacked let them do that,” he said.

Mr Malembeka said there was need for officers to increase patrol especially with the darkness that had come with the increased load shedding.

Assistant police spokesperson Esther Katongo said officers were currently conducting day and night patrols in the areas following persistent reports of attacks by criminals.

“We have received persistent reports of people being attacked and it is not only on foot bridges, even in other areas in town like at Simoson.

“Therefore, we have officers that are currently patrolling the areas although we have a challenge because it is not possible to station the officers at one point.

Ms Katongo also urged members of the public to be security cautious by desisting to move alone during awkward hours.

  1. They are all ku traffic, Citizens just need to Arm themselves, those mentioned areas have been hiding places for thieves for a very long time. The Police are instead telling us to move alone, what nonsense is this?

    • When it comes to political issues our police have more than enough man power. And for the security of the simple citizens all sorts of challenges are cited. Please people in authority help us the Lusaka residents to be secure again.

  2. Only in Zambia do I hold my belongings tight, and tread fast into the opposite direction… when I see a man in uniform.

  4. put hidden cameras there. ask one of the companies to donate a few and see how many *****s you will haul in one night. the problem with our police is that they are used to being told what to do. they only get excited when they see ZNBC cameras at courts and when they have issued a call out to one prominent politicians

  5. This is a country run by faggots and we expect any thing positive? Even the President has given up. He wants to take over the job left by fatherless Bwalya.

  6. There is too much crime in Zambia, even the SG has to move in a convoy of 8-10 vehicles for her to feel safe. Come to think of it, why is Stella Libongani being protected so much?. Is she that important that she must move in a convoy of 8-10 vehicles and a bike in front? Really? Is this how our taxes are being wasted?. No wonder why most businesses evade paying tax. Bravo to the evaders. If 10 police vehicles are escorting Stella to wherever she wants to go, how does the police even assign a vehicle for patrols. And you keeping saying infintu ni Lungu, pamaka. Are you people insane? Have Zambians lost their minds? Year my people have gone kuku!

  7. It is shameful that our police are more preoccupied with traffic offenses because they want to get a few coins from motorists.

  8. imaging The Road without traffic police officer ,more careless driver and speeder, more innocent life perishes easily, to the traffice officers i say thank you , but dont just impound some bearable defects ,which would not cause danger to our road . if traffic officer would really enforce the fine ,we would have no much road accident like now .

  9. Yes we need the Traffic controllers but they are just one of the many branches of policing. The regular (black cap), the criminal investigators and the C5 to mention a few. In this matter, it is the CID which is failing. The District has zones and the officers in charge of the affected zones are answerable to their bosses and finally to the citizens. It is actually true that some officers are undesirable in the system.

  10. Citizens are advised not to move alone at ‘Awkward hours.’!!
What is an awkward hour so we can have self imposed curfew?

  11. Guys the cops dont have the acumen to control the crime how many incidents have we had and here is a bird in the sky that cannot even monitor whats going on what is their job street patrols car chases armed robberies what explain rapes hijaks and yet zero control from the cops start to wake up wake up Zambia we have lost control there is no police only traffic cops who want to make money and share the pot at the end of the day this is now ELDORADO WHAT IS A CHOPPER GOING TO DO
