UPND, PF shun Parliamentary Committee on Constitution

Share

THE Parliamentary committee on legal affairs, governance, human rights, gender matters and child affairs yesterday expressed disappointment with the opposition United Party for National Development (UPND) for failing to appear before it.

The committee which is headed by Choma Central Member of Parliament (MP) Cornelius Mweetwa, has been receiving views from various stakeholders on the Constitutional Amendment Bill and concludes its work today.

Mufumbwe MP Steven Masumba, who is a member of the committee, said it is disheartening that the UPND has shunned the sittings when the opposition party has been calling for a people-driven constitution.

“I wish to commend UNIP for coming. Some parties like UPND and PF did not appear before us despite being invited,” Mr Masumba said.

And speaking in an interview at Parliament, Mpongwe MP Gabriel Namulambe said the PF did not need to appear before the committee because it is the PF government that took the Bill to government.

“This is a PF paper through Government,. so PF did not need to be here,” Mr Namulambe said.
And making a submission to the committee, UNIP deputy national secretary Alfred Banda said the country’s oldest political party is committed to seeing a new constitution that will stand the test of time.

Mr Banda said UNIP is in agreement with almost all the clauses in the draft constitution.

  1. Edgar Lungu and Ngosa Simbyakula are below average lawyers. These two failed to amend the Public Order Act as Ministers of Home Affairs & Justice. To think they can preside over a more complex situation like the constitution is to be deluded. Solution, vote them out next year

    • Good riddance UPND! Stay out of this stupid idea of tempering with the constitution to perpetuate power in the hands of PF thieves.

All the clauses PF want to change are the ones which majority Zambians would like to see in the constitution. So removing them would be denying Zambians their wishes to have a constitution which is fair and not biased in favour of the ruling party.

If PF officials are genuine, about the constitution amendments they should first remove the PF robes and wear the robes of the opposition party and ordinary citizens for them to critically analyse and understand the full impact of the amendments they want to push through. Doing otherwise would be cheating themselves just like UNIP and MMD did, and then later found themselves dancing to unfairness of the…

    • Doing otherwise would be cheating themselves just like UNIP and MMD did, and then later found themselves dancing to unfairness of the document they created.

PF should not be deluded that the will never be at the receiving end of the very amendments they are supporting. Only time will tell.

It gets worse! How on earth can criminal like Masumba a convicted criminal be part of the constitution making process.

Its only in Zambia and under the useless PF that a convicted criminal can still remain an MP ! This is proof that our judiciary is rotten to the core and it operates under the instructions of the PF.

Only UPND will save Zambia. Vote UPND 2016.

    • Yebo Larry Mweetwa aka Wanzelu ninzi kushupa so. Koya mu Simulangu ku Macha via Muyobe and help your mukwashi. We know who you are. Very stu.pid human being you are.
