MMD members on the Copperbelt have refused to allow their party president Nevers Mumba to contest the 2016 general elections without the mandate of the national convention by joining their Central Province counterparts who are demanding a party national indaba early next year to elect new office bearers.

And Central Province vice chairman George Kangwa has said threats from party president Mumba and insults from his ‘‘henchmen’’ will not help in strengthening the former ruling party.

Copperbelt Province MMD chairman Moses Mumba has said that holding a convention next year is a constitutional matter that must not be stopped by anyone.

He said all those who were appointed or elected in between the last convention in 2011 would cease to hold office and seek a fresh mandate from members.

In a press statement to the Daily Nation, Mr. Mumba said in line with article 4 of the MMD constitution, a convention must be held every five years and afterwards the elected officials must seek a fresh mandate from the people.

He said that accordingly, the Dr Mumba-led executive was bound the convention of April 2011.

“Holding of a convention in 2016 is a must for our party, MMD. Article 4 of our constitution stipulates that, and I quote ‘National leaders shall hold elections for five years and shall be eligible for re-election’, end of quote. Now the current National Executive Committee was elected on 7th April 2011, meaning on 7th April 2016 they cease to hold office and go back to seek re-election,” Mr. Mumba’s statement read in part.

He further advised that Dr. Mumba should not mislead the public that his mandate shall expire in 2017 because he was elected to fill a vacancy created when former President Rupiah Banda resigned.

Mr Mumba explained that when a member was elected to fill a vacancy, they did not start a term of office of their own but rather complete the remainder.

He called on founder members of the party to come on board and salvage the party.

  1. I HAVE SAID IT BEFORE AND I WILL SAY IT AGAIN. NEVERS MUMBA IS JUDAS ISCARIOT. IF THE PF OR UPND OR FDD PAID HIM K30000 HE WILL SELL THE MMD.

    • @ Kubweka…I cannot agree more..well he did it before when he was “spokesperson” of the aggrieved opposition parties in 2002 to become vice president in Levy’s admin…problem Zambians forget very easily like chickens. I think its alcoholism making most adult Zedians have short memory.

  2. so Kangwa can’t calculate time. 2012 to 2013 is one year, 2013 to 2014 is another year. By the time you reach 2016 its 4 years. What a Dullard he is. A hired Gun! Foolish and fake

    • You are the one who is dull. Are you saying that Edgar Lungu should serve 5 years before we go for election? Nevers is serving a term from 2011 to 2016, then another term starts. Terms are not for individuals foolish

  3. ..wait a minute…last MMD elections were held on 7th April, 2011….???…is that true..?? general election were held on 20 Sept, 2011 and RB was the candidate….there must be a mix up of dates here…some people have never had a formal employment their entire life…they survive thru being used as useful 1diots….when ever an opportunity presents itself like this they rise up to the occasion….Mutati pays the so called Kangwa to say what he uttered..Nevers pays the other guy to counter react…Mutati pays another guy to be in support of Kangwa and Nevers pays another guy in northern province to trash the brewing demands and that goes on and on…tomorrow it will be some one from Luapula in favour of Mutati…the other day it will be from Chipata for Nevers..eeish

    • @ Scrutinizerer

That is Zambian political leadership for you.
A bunch of useless hypocrites without any achievement to theirs name, stabling, kissing and shagging each other in the back for slice of tax-payers hard earned cash.

    • This is confusing – I think the argument is, the Party president is elected at a Convention every five years. The last Convention was in April 2011 – and RB won. Then RB lost the 2011 elections and “retired” from politics. At an extra-ordinary Convention or Meeting, Nevers Mumba was elected Party president. If the party Constitution states that a Party President elected at an extra-ordinary Convention or Meeting does not have a five year mandate but merely completes the remainder of the five years, then these guys have a point. Besides, I think a Party President is not automatically a Republican Presidential candidate – though this is always ignored.

  4. This Mumba is only cadre following the MMD Constitution to the latter, MMD is only democratic party in Zambia and NEVERS MUMBA should not turn it to be his KATEMBA PARTY, if he is popular why is he fearing to go for a Convention? RB called for Convention in 2011 even when there was only 5 months to go for general elections so what excuse is NEVERS MUMBA going to give? we are calling on these so called NGOs like FODEP AND ZCID to help build democracy in Zambia by holding these political party presidents to be accountable to their party Constitutions before even filling in general election nominations. MMD is bigger than NEVERS and it can not allow him to run it the way he wants, MMD as a party HAS not benefited anything from NEVERS’S PRESIDENCY it is him who has benefited a lot from…
