Kabwata Member of Parliament (MP), Given Lubinda, has warned residents living along Lusaka’s Ring Road to desist from planting maize along the Zesco pylons as doing so poses a security risk.

Mr Lubinda said the growing of maize along the pylons was a security risk because when the maize grows it becomes breeding ground for criminals who hide in the tall maize crops and attack people.

He said anyone that will not heed to the warning risks their maize being slashed by the local authority.

Mr Lubinda, who is also Minister of Agriculture, said this at the occasion to mark the International Volunteers Day which fell yesterday.

He has instead instructed residents to plant groundnuts and beans as the crops do not grow tall.

And Stanbic Bank has donated K10, 000 towards the clean-up exercise which started yesterday on the ring road roundabout where heaps of garbage have piled up.

And speaking at the commemoration of International Volunteers Day, Minister of Local Government and Housing, Stephen Kampyongo, said the campaign to clean up the area along the Zesco pylons along the Ring Road is the responsibility of all people.

Mr Kampyongo said his ministry is working on a comprehensive policy on solid waste management which is aimed at finding ways to dispose of waste.

He has since appealed to residents living along the Ring Road to come on board and clean the environment.

And Finance Deputy Minister, Chris Mvunga, said the exercise of cleaning up garbage is encouraging.

The clean-up exercise is being spearheaded by the United Nations Volunteers committee.

  1. Given lubinda is for member of parliament or information and broadcasting minister not agriculture.. The man hs lamentably failed as agric minister and has lamentably succeeded as MP and during his stint as minister in charge of ruling party propaganda…bwana presido (ECL) please consider lubinda for the information portfolio as u bounce back with a landslide in 2016 as it is clear that will be the case going by the gullibility, illiteracy, political ignorance and propensity by the majority zambians to vote based on their emotions, mob psychology, tribalism and allergy to progressive sound leadership.

  2. Bo Lubinda is an utter complete let down like Bob Schinga…Kabimba put him in his place for the coward and yellow belly he is….its no wonder he is now issuing statements like a council official or ZESCO manager…instead of making agricultural sector the number sector he is talking about silly issues.

  3. ..bwana Lubinda, if you did not have anything sensible to talk about at that forum you were better off keeping damn quiet….it could have sounded better if he used the word safety instead of security…safety in the sense that when people are in the fields at a time of weeding or harvesting and there happen to be a thunder storm, that would definitely pause a danger under or near the high voltage power lines….next will be Kampyongo minister of housing demanding those high wall fences in townships to be demolished because they are hiding dens for criminals terrorising residents….

  4. Mr zayello, you are really smoking “Hot-Pot”, I now understand why Sinkamba of Greens party wants to start exporting this worldwide!!!!!

  5. Lubinda, your job is to grow maize wherever there is space, even under electricity pylons. If there is a problem the Ministry of energy through Zesco will inform you. There seem to be no clear mandates for these *****s.
