Almost the entire Zambia is in darkness after a fault at Kariba dam caused the tripping of Kariba South-Kariba North tie line.

Energy Minister Dora Siliya confirmed that the outage which started around 23 Hours on Thursday has affected all provinces except for western and southern provinces which are supplied through the Victoria Falls power station.

The blackout was experienced even at key institutions such as the University Teaching Hospital, Levy Mwanawasa Hospital and the University of Zambia.

The blackout led to some UNZA students protesting outside the Great East road campus, blocking traffic and stoning some vehicles that were passing by.

‘We lost power supply to entire country except for Western and Southern provinces after the tripping of Kariba South-Kariba North tie line which was carrying our imports of about 560 MW. This triggered the trippings of generators at kariba north and later Kafue gorge on overload. Restoration is in progress and Lusaka should be back on supply in next 30 minutes,’ Ms Siliya said.

However, around 05 Hours on Friday morning, most parts of Lusaka and Zambia were still in darkness.

    • The entire Zambia has been in darkness on what do next regarding how to resuscitate the economy and restoring good governance.

    • I would never in my life vote for an African man. They are all useless regardless of education. They are only good for $ex, sports and menial work. African men chased away the white man and to this date Africa remains a shunty compound because it’s men are stagnated brained good for nothing corrupt baby makers.
Look at Zambia, Malawi and sadly SA now, to name but a few. Bunda bwakuyumfwa ati “am a lawyer, I have a PhD, am a doctor, am an economist or am an engineer.” In the meantime, all these so called professionals can’t even think beyond women or beer while the continent continues to plunge in further darkness as its men hold out their palms for alms from white men! What a disgrace!

    • @Real Olivia Pope; who pi$$ed in your cereal this morning? On second thought, you are right my sister. I will be the first to admit that African leaders and in particular men are a disgrace the world over. Corrupt to the core, one man for himself type of mentality and every last one of us is a know-it-all! Problem is we know nothing and I will be the first to admit that most of us are educated ignorants!

    • Why stone vehicles that have nothing to do with the outage??? Stupidity cannot be the end result of higher education! Expel the culprits!

    • @Real Olivia Pope your thinking disgusts me to the core. You really should study history and then current events before you spew such ignorance. There are bigger powers at play that you and fellow Africans with slave mentality seem not to know anything about. The reason why politicians make promises (eg Sata) and then when they get to state house they change is because once in State house they are quickly shown who are the real controllers of Zambia’s economy and resources are. African leader who dare defy the Real controllers of our continent like Gen Sankara are assassinated with the blessing of those whites you worship.Whats the real reason sanctions were placed on Zimbabwe against Mugabe? He dared touch a white man..Tony Blair terminated the Lanchester House agreement signed in 1980 and…

    • and when Mugabe was left with little choice but to forcibly remove white farmers. Why weren’t Blairs actions publicized in the media? Why wasn’t Blair condemned? The world systems are designed to keep black man a slave and Africa’s resources under western control.why do you think Manufacturing companies are not encouraged in Africa? and under IMF SAP programmes rolled out in Africa.. countries were encouraged to sell their businesses to foreign entities and thus kill manufacturing industries.Zambia lost all her manufacturing industries after 1991..now your presidents are seen opening Malls like that is development.Have no doubt about it that greatly pleases the ‘donors’..Enough said there is google use it! You shall know the truth and the truth will set you free

    • @The real Olivia pope! am with you girl, a black man is not a human being but an advanced chimp, I realise why Donald Trump suggests Africa needs one more century (100+years) for recolonisatin……..I want to know a reality what a black man did in the history of man kind not theories what a black can achieve.

    • @The Real Olivia Pope
You are what I call a COON if you are a black African I urge to study about self instead of exposing your ignorance. Go and conduct your coonery and your f8ckery elsewhere….its coons like you who are polluting young black children’s minds if you were within an arm’s length and spewing such rubbish I swear on my ancestors I would have slapped you across your face I don’t care if you are a woman to wake you up from your stupor!!

    • The blog @The Real Olivia Pope has triggered interesting responses. Yoweri Museveni once commented on this colonisation issue. He said, something to the effect that… Africa blames the colonizers for the things they fail to fix several years after colonialism ended. He then paused and asked; Why were Africans colonised? He left it at that for us africans to ponder.

    • @Misango the answer to why Africa was colonised is easy..We were defeated by a superior weapon -the gun…You see in Africa we had land, rivers,we grew food,we had excellent weather..However those whose countries freeze over during the year had to invent ways to survive their harsh enviroments.Africans were living in ‘heaven’-no need for inventions because we had it all.So those people who had to think hard or die found a way to conquer Africa. And they have found a way to sustain their economies using Africa’s resources.IF Africa shut its borders to the world ..their economies would collapse..no more gold, diamonds, copper, cocoa, fresh fruits and vegetables,no coltan for smart phones….But they have smartly convinced us we need them more than they need us. and in a way we have become…

    • Maharaji
You are an example of an African who cant think. Why do Arabs control the price of oil and you Africans cant control the price of your products. You talk of industries but are the same pipo who have made the cost of production high. For example you have an unnecesarry minimum wage making your countries uncompetetivewith others then blame the white man fr your foolishness when only 10% of your productive workforce is in employment.Dont expect the white man to lookout for your interests when you are the betrayers of your own cause.

    • @Mailon what you suffer from is Stockholm syndrome…White people are very lucky to have people like you who will defend them to the end…If Africans supported each other half as much as you support the whites..wouldn’t our continent be different. Instead you pull any progressive thinking African down..Don’t think for a moment that I think Africans are flawless but we are not each others enemy..we have a bigger enemy but we fight among ourselves,we are easily bribed with money,we don’t take time to see the bigger picture. So what will you accomplish blaming your fellow Africans? Nothing. However with my mentality I can say enough is enough and start taking back our power from the West. Trade should be balanced..Why is everything pegged to the dollar? When the dollar strengthens we…

    • When the dollar strengthens we all suffer. We hold our breath when the US job reports are to be released. Why? Why should we follow their rules?.Aid from donors is dead and destructive. It encourages laziness to think and innovate.I would stop it.There is enough food, water to feed the whole continent.

    • Olivia Pope, black men are marrying Asian and Islanders, plus European women. Guess what? These men are now succeeding and doing really well. Charles Hudson, partner at SoftTech VC, Jelani Aliyu, hails from Sokoto State, Nigeria and is General Motors Lead Exterior Designer and the designer of the Chevy Volt. Whom ever broke your heart, might have saved all black men future heart aches.

    • Jay Jay leave her other cheek for me, it would be a double slap to knock common sense into this lost soul. Africa civilized the world, but know these women are still sellouts. Look at America and how black women have destroyed the black family. It is history.

    • How did these students get accepted to UNZA, they are i.dio.ts who protest at anything. Lunshi apita, riot! Imbwa yabosa, riot! Lightening strikes a tree, riot! WTF!

  1. SOME, ONLY. SOME, UNZA STUDENTS WHO ARE SUPPOSED TO KNOW BETTER BUT WHO IN REALITY ARE SO IGNORANT ALWAYS RESORT TO DEFAULT BEHAVIOUR BECAUSE THEY ARE IN THE STONE AGE.
THEY SHOULD BE OFFEFING SOLUTIONS TO OUR PROBLEMS NOT VIOLENCE AND PHLEGM.

    • They biggest mistake at UNZA is the design of that Institution ….from its history of protests; they should have moved the accommodation buildings away from the campus.

  2. Hope the Japanese assistance on helping Zambia materialize. Zambia is not exceptional to this problem alone, its the entire Africa. The most obvious question to ask now is, why has not African leaders or so called intellectuals foreseen this. Gen-sets have mushroomed everywhere and irritating while sleeping because of noise they create from neighbors who have it. Now if borrowing to rectify this is way forward so be it. Zambia show star looking at all areas of our economy 10 to 20 years into the future, eg underground water, water itself, rain patterns, minerals, youth employment. How best are we regulating and planning on such.

  3. Too bad! Hope all will be fine this morning! Sad on UNZA students who feel they are so special that anything that happens for the blocking great east road and destroying pipos property is the solution! Sad indeed 2 pipo expected to think using their brains n not Stomach.

  4. This is a very serious bleach of national security that puts the entire nation at risk. Power outrage is a very risk thing in every sector of the nation, in case you wondering how, ask the Countries that have faced terrorist attacks or the Western.

  5. Despite the black out. I applaud Dora Siliya for the quickly informing the nation…! UNZA students despite being intellectuals still have stone age kind of thinking. They think like bushmen. UNZA mgt should have genesets in the end event of any power cut. But they prefer posh cars…

    • The real bushmen are Lungu and his PF! They are the ones taking Zambia back into the stone age!

This is what “NO VISION” brings.

We must kick these M0R0Ns out NOW! 2016 is too late, by that time Zambia WILL be back in the stone age, Lusaka will just be a big komponi and we will all be using malasha and candles!

  6. Legacy Companies like Zesco need to review its sprawling base of heavy assets Such utilities will need to have a nimble strategic response if they have to live to the mandate of the core business of Generation and Distribution of Energy

A measure of solid IPP in distributed Generation becomes very necessary and important for Zambia including the organizational design that goes with it to support Zesco

The current single circuit like as opposed to four heavy transmission like non interconnected will always be an inherent risk should there be a failure but our equipment was recently refurbished better in the region why

  7. this means we are not ready to increase generation capacity by 600 MW. it will trip the whole system batini. how much will it cost to buy the same ship we buy power from? may be it will be cheaper to buy one than borrowing everyday just to pay the bills.

  8. Headline line should have read: UNZA students try to resolve Zambia’s Electricity crisis by stoning cars of innocent (ZESCOLESS) citizens. Somebody please tell me this didn’t happen! As a former CBU students’ leader, I would be hugely disappointed that our supposed intellectuals doubled the misery of suffering masses.

  9. The problem is not government its national planning and the president realised that its a pity we are till trying to address communication in roads build up and we seem to be far away from that growth to see that roads are not the real issues for Zambia’s economy but necessary to move a step forward and power is not also the final point
Our installed potential capacity is too little for those potential 3000 MW total our friends talk about 10000 plus MW and their Capitalisation per MW is competitive
How do you get out competited with systems than are old next

    • No buddy! he is at home(ancestral) in Malawi, just jetted in there on Wednesday, check out Malawian media (Nyasa times.com)

  10. But we have seen this and that commissioning of Zesco projects. What are those commissioning supposed to bring? Awe mwandi mwee. Ifya ma sushifye lyonse.

  11. @The real Olivia pope! am with you girl, a black man is not a human being but an advanced chimp, I realise why Donald Trump suggests Africa needs one more century (100+years) for recolonisation…..

  12. It’s a global thing…it’s China….it’s Elnino….it’s metal prices…it’s rainfall in the south…..it’s a regional thing….every country is going through this….it’s the opposition…..

    • That is PF for you!

Blame everything that goes wrong on something or somebody else!

But the way to solve a problem is to find out what is the cause. When you understand that, you know what to fix.

So until Lungu and Co admits that PF have failed, things will just keep on getting worse! They do not have the brains or the spine to face Zambia and tell us the truth.

  13. UNZA that is the only practical thing you can do blocking great east road, stonning vehicles ,but no inventions,no major projects and the professors are also dull coz the projects submitted in 1995 are the same being submitted in 2015 no inhancement during the last semister for graduation,so sad

  14. @ Juba … so true mwe! Under what they call ‘Crooks’ students submit the same project assignments that are passed on from intake to intake with the only variation being Computer Number. And the Professor goes on to give grades just because he/she is a product of the same nonsense. TODAY ANYONE WOULD BE ASHAMED TO BE ASSOCIATED WITH UNZA!

  15. Blaming the white man for Africas ills ?
India has put a man on the moon. China has $3 trillion in reserves and consumes 60% of world copper, cement, and steel. Malaysia ? Brazil ? Vietnam ?

All these are former colonies. They are moving forward. Because when the white man came to India he saw Taj Mahal. China he saw Great Wall. In Africa they found not one double story house or brick house. Stop blaming world powers, start blaming yourself

    • Who do you think built the Great Pyramids, Great Cities with advanced waterways and sewer systems about 10,000 years ago when your slave masters were living in caves…when we tell you to study about self instead of being hoodwinked by religion to hate yourself and worship the white fictitious Jesus or Mohammed

    • You delusional person Who do you think developed libraries, science and math? Just because you do not read and study history, do not compare the whole continent to your flock. Africa needs to awaken from people like yourself first and foremost.

  16. Yes we produce nothing yet consuming everything. You are crying for power which you can’t produce. You are busy talking about the economy which you have failed to analyse and plan for the future. Folks from unza invest in research and offer solutions and behave like intellectual some of you are enjoying taxpayers money. Bursary. unza mother of all universities in Zambia. Shame on you

  17. ….I think in Africa and Zambia in particular, we should concentrate at producing engineers at technician level….those hands-on guyz….not the so called UNZA graduates….we absolutely don’t do design work, complex problem solving of which the graduates are meant to do…just look at this tripping out affecting nearly the whole country….how many times has it occurred in the last two years….if we had ‘real’ electrical engineers at ZESCO…definitely this cannot be recurring every now and then……the initial fault would have given the engineers a good lesson to work on to avoid the same fault from happening again….

  18. WHO IS MAHARAJI? ????

MAHARAJI PLEASE, WE NEEDS TO MEET. YOU KNOW EXACTLY WHATEVER YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT. WE NEED PEOPLE WHO THINK LIKE YOU!!!!

    BIG UPS TO MAHARAJI. RESPECT!!

LOOK AT ALL THESE SHALLOW FOOLS. MAHARAJI, PLEASE EDUCATE THESE LOST SHEEP!!!!

    • Thank you SEEDAT! Africa’s future is bright because more and more Africans are knowing the truth and the truth is what will set us free.

  19. @Apathy, you are extremely right, African can not cannot continue blaming the colonizers. just take a look at the Asian tigers, Singapore, malasia, etc. most African countries take Zambia for example at one time it had GDP higher than South Korea ,but the opposite has happened we keep going backwards.Look at the Chinese economy, their Government is still being ruled by the communist party, but the west cannot dictate their pace.Unless we overcome this victim mentality , we will still be trapped in the past.

    • Until you really know what got you to where you are today, nothing will change. Truth and victim mentality are two very different things and should not be confused.

    • You do realize Africa had to be held back because it is the most dynamic continent on the planet. A developed and powerful Africa is a threat to the whole planet. This is because Africans know themselves, followed by Arabs, then the Chinese.

  20. Thanks @: Maharaji,Dalitso,Jay Jay for educating some of these ill informed and still enslaved people like Real Olivia pope “poop”,Viyazi Tembo etal. They need to find time to read about, listen to and watch issues that have shaped Africa’s current state of affairs. If these chaps are African and Black then they are truly lost, colonized in their minds with poor upbringing that they have nothing to appreciate even about their parents who brought them forth- prostitutes who get hooked up to whites who change their lives usually carry such views because failures to build their own lives. Olivia..,Viyazi wake up and understand that even if we Africans have some part to be blamed for in our backwards,we are always being suffocated by whites. Read about Nkhuruma,Lumumba,Sankara,Steve Biko…

    • @zambia is ours ,Denial of a blackmans failure and advocating for african pride is the real reason why we won’t learn from the west and remain in ‘darkness.and by the way when you(jay jay) suggest that africans built the pyaramids you are forgeting that it is not the black african who built them, its the arabs.the boundary of inteligence stops the moment you cross over to sub sahara africa.any country that seems to be doing fine in sub sahara africa has a connection with whites. A gud example is south africa, the lazy niggers are slowly destroying south africa.why do u keep on blaming the west for all your problems. What can an african brag about in history

    • @dis network
You have been brainwashed to think that Arabs lived in Africa at that period by watching Hollywood movies produced by white men instead of reading books; go to the museums and look at the remains of those mummies of kings and queens you will clearly see the nappy in some cases dread locked hair; go to Timbuktu or research about the books that they will never tell you about.
This is why I always say the more you know the more you hate…this is why ignorant because like yourselves are happy and never pass anything of value to your children. Its pointless to urge with someone who is completely blank and worships the white man.

Wake up for £$%^sake and study about self!!

    • ***** Dis Network. Arabs on came into Africa later on. The only Arab nation that was well established is Mesopotamia ( Iraq ). Who do you think the Arabs invaded in Egypt? Aliens? Shut your ignorant self up.

  21. mike mulongoti asked GRZ to account for the $500 million used to modernise kariba that was meant to avoid such happenings, apart from the other billions used for new turbines, no one can account for that money….no one seems to know how it was used…the message is clear, any one working for a parastatal under this PF GRZ can do anything, rest assured there is no accountability , nothing will happen to you..But take note if there is a change of GRZ, you will be held accountable for your actions and your work.

  22. Question to Real Olivia Pope and Viyazi Tembo, which the nations are the major culprits causing climate change leading to disasters and calamities we are experiencing today? The same nations you are praising. They are polluting the air we breath, rivers, oceans. Recently I read news from mining areas where locals were complaining over effects of pollution of the rivers where they draw water for consumption, fish no longer survives. Who are the suppliers of guns used to kill our people in Africa?

  23. One of the solutions is to encourage and accelerate harnessing of alternative sources of energy e.g. Solar, wind at individual level, family level and community level. Any excess energy harnessed at this level can then be fed back (sold) into the National Grid. This is a God sent win-win opportunity between Zambians with a knack for business, and ZESCO.

  24. THEN U WONDER?!!
The real engineers were removed, & non- qualified P.F. Mposamabwe Cadres were put in to run things.
    THEN U WONDER!!

  25. You see when you play politics with everything. Eventually the truth wills out and the fangs of reality come biting with venom! Next time you call for prayers in the name of political manipulation make sure you have your ba.cksides covered.

  26. Investing in research to ascertain which alternative sources of energy to invest in is the way to go to optimise on investment. Research is to development what eyesight is to a human being. But I have to say, you know you are a sightless lame duck when an Aid provider like Japan, after listening to you and observing your etiquette, firstly offers to do a research for you to ascertain which sort of aid you need.

  27. @Jay Jay,thanks for further educating the ignorant! @dis network, wake up and understand your world!!@Jay Jaya, What you have said is what most people do not know because they have been fooled to think their civilization started with the white man. Africa was already trading with Asia and the Arab world before the whites came to plunder and conquer! When the white brute set foot on our continent,we were already in iron age smelting iron, copper, gold and other minerals. That is how the white brute came to know about the mineral potential we have but instead of just trading with us like the Indians and Chinese did, they chose brutality and conquest. They did this to South America,Australia etc..continued

    • These people don’t know that it was their ancestors who taught the Europeans how to bathe properly with soap…it’s just simply criminal not to read and study about self.

    • @zambia is ours, jay jay.don’t flatter yourselves with baseless ideologies.if black africans build pyramids as u put it,where has all that Knowledge gone.because there is no such evidence to that effect.proof should be through inventions ,which africa can’t brag about.its like bragging about theories that u can’t put into practice.the writtings and artifacts in the pyramids doesn’t point to black africans but arabs, their culture and their gods.you cant draw conclusions from the mummy’s hair, your reasoning is probably sourced from the work of conspiracy theorists lacking any credibility because that alone is not the only thing found in mummies.don’t mistake me for praising whites am just being realistic.why should your creativity disappear. what is in you,is in you.

    • @dis network

To be honest I have no time for lazy people who have no time to research..no time at all.

Wish you all the best in your life!!

  28. All of you need to start googling The Real World Order to awaken yourselves to what really is happening in this planet. It will chill your souls.

  29. Hey Ecsay! Tell us the truth. Is abnormal power outage issue as a result of direct low water levels at the Kariba that sent you importing power oro just some Engineering booboo at the generation plant? Ecsay does Zimbabwe face the same nasty power experience also? Yeah! Zesco’s recent mismanagement of power generation is an absolute worry to me. They are a thorn in my flesh. Think of it, power loss to Universities and Hospitals, a square load-shedding of 8 provinces whether accidental oro on purpose is like inconceivable; blatant failures. On moral grounds these incompetent goons and boons should have resigned already like yesterday. Does this country have competent Engineers or they are just miserable drunks?

  30. who wud want to leave in darkness??? do u think zesco wants th country including the mining companies and th whole economy to be in darkness?? do u think its delibarate move??? it has neva rained in southern province that kariba dam can get to ts full capacity thats reality, even here in lusaka its the same, it has neva rained seriously…… guys its high time we prepared for harder times if it doesnt rain

  31. God have mercy! If I put it to the Zambians today that it will never rain like it used to, will Zesco then cease to exist oro Zambians will continuously subsidize Zesco through hiked tarrifs till they faint? We also can read the signs. In my location it never rained in October; rained only 5 times in November, and we are almost mid-December still no rain show. Last season we hard below average of rains. The world started singing about climate change back in time. It is a real reality that climate change has hit us badly. Exhibit 1 sad scenes at the Victoria falls too. Now we believe that as we are busy with other things Zesco should be busy exploiting the coal in Maamba District. Get busy and heat that coal for thermal energy. Zesco get busy or you extinct. Get busy! If you can’t hydro…

  32. If you can hydro it, well thermal it. I mean find a solution don’t wait for the rains. The worst case scenario is that suppose it does not rain; guys pull up your socks ala!

  33. A very sad development in Zambia. It is not the first time the whole country or nearly the whole country has been plunged into darkness. What causes the tripping? Obviously it is caused by either overloading or poor quality equipment probably bought from China.
What exactly is being done to alleviate the power crisis? Last night until the power stabilized was frustrating indeed! Sadly this power shedding will be normalized and we will accept it as part of our lives.
I cry for this country. It is on its knees. It is a hopeless situation.

    • Its also a security risk ….merely cut the high tension cables from southern province and the whole of the country is blacked out. Talk of putting all eggs in the one basket.

  34. Ati Ba University students??? and Tomorrow these are the ones who will be vying for the highest office in the land. Utter disgrace, Shame Shame Shame.

  35. Truth hurts. Let us admit that the African man has failed. We can’t be blaming the white man for our own foolishness. The Real Olivia Pope has raised some issues which needs real reflection. Her mistake is putting all black men in the same category. Let a white man take over Zambia again, all these load shedding will be a thing of the past. Compare the shopping centres where a white man is found and our compounds. Africa can only rise with leaders like the Tanzania leaders and not the Jameson man or those who depend on a short of kachasu to remain awake in parliament. Look at the money PF wasted on bye elections?

  36. Truth hurts. Let us admit that the African man has failed. We can’t be blaming the white man for our own fo.o.li.sh.ness and lack of planning ahead. The Real Olivia Pope has raised some issues which needs real reflection. Her mistake is putting all black men in the same category. Let a white man take over Zambia again, all these load shedding will be a thing of the past.

  37. Look at Manda Hill and Arcades as examples. Because the white man is there, it is enjoyable to go shopping there than at Comesa or Soweto markets. Let a white man rule, Soweto and Comesa markets etc will look different. We had money but we wasted it with bye elections. We have a bloated cabinet. We see Victoria falls facing water challenge but we can’t think of importing water from other areas to boost water levels during summer. But a new crop of black man like the Tanzanian leader gives hope to Africa. So leave The Real Olivia Pope alone

  38. Lets vote then.. who wants white men to recolonize Zambia??? I am a strong believer that Zambia can do better in all spheres of the economy if there was right leadership in government and of course with right attitudes. We can surely learn from Uganda and Rwanda. Kagame and Mseveni have managed to instill fiscal discipline and people have something to smile about.. Pa Zambia your leaders are now using God for economic prosperity…this is shocking!!! I totally agree that current crop of leadership has failed..

  39. WHILST I BELIEVE THERE CUD BE SYSTEM FAILURE BUT I ALSO KNOW THAT THERE IS A UPND PLAN WHICH DISTURBS MEALIE MEAL,ELECTRICITY, SOCCER FAZ,OP,POLICE, PAYMIC, ETC BLACKOUT CUD HAVE BEEN CAUSED BY UPND JUST LIKE THEY DID DURING A FRIENDLY FOOTBALL GAME. IF ITS U UPND THEN LET GOD PUNISH U AND YO LEADER FOR CAUSING DEATHS IN HOSPITALS,MINES ETC. OP HELP US PLEASE SORTOUT THESE PIPO PUT THIS TO AN END

  40. Very simple the black out occurred due to the Zambian government not paying for imports. You the voters are paying for your irrational choice. There is no one but yourselves to blame. I do not see street protests or a no confidence against lungu so what’s the issue. If you the people are so tired and pissed tell Edgar to go.
