UPND President Hakainde Hichilema has told leading international news outlets Al Jazeera TV and Bloomberg that he is seeking public office to restore sanity in management of Zambia’s economy.
In a wide ranging interview that was conducted at his New Kasama residence, Mr Hichilema said the Zambian economy has been mismanaged by the PF administration.
In a brief posting on his Facebook page, Mr Hichilema said Zambia is a rich country with great potential that needs to be fully harnessed.
“We were honoured to host and undertake interviews with international media houses Al Jazeera Television and Bloomberg this morning at our residence. We discussed a wide range of issues from our alternative economic policy proposals to governance issues,” Mr Hichilema said.
He added, “Central to our message was that we are seeking public office in order to restore sanity in the management of the country’s economy. Without preempting our discussion with them that will be televised on the Al Jazeera Television network soon, we stressed that Zambia is a rich country with great potential that needs to be fully harnessed in order to create jobs for our people, especially the youths.”
“We also empathised the need to fully empower our people with business skills and real jobs under our economic diversification programme. On governance issues we addressed the restrictions on the movement of citizens through the application of some pieces of legislation such as the Public Order Act that hinder citizens, especially opposition political players, from freely mingling and mobilising themselves ahead of the upcoming elections.”

@zedoc, It was not HH decision to sell the mines. The decision to sell the mines was the Zambian government’s under Chiluba after pressure from IMF. I am impressed with the house president Hakainde Hichilema has built. It is a real marvel to be in such a place and one ca only attribute such to hard work.
Just thinking, i am wondering what it is like the areas and people that have helped HH to amass such wealth. I am asking myself, what has he invested in those areas. That is a house built from the wealth HH made after benefiting from the privatization of Zambian parastatals. He probably did not have that wealth before privatization.

Furthermore, in 2011 elections when again, RB (Easterner), HH (Southerner) and Sata (Northerner) contested, the results from their respective regions were as follows: RB got 74.28% from Eastern (and 18.89% from Southern); Sata got 74.66% from Luapula (and 6.67% from Southern); HH got 72.31% from Southern (with 0.79% from Northern! and 3. 04% from Eastern! – much less than in 2008!)… Note that each candidate still got above 72% from their own regions just like in 2008 – so no change!

When one has time to go through comments people make some very interesting revelations in levels of thinking come to the fore ranging from rubbish and ignorance though articulate analytical discussion! Trivia of all sorts is somewhere between the two extremes. Anyway the Constitution provides for freedoms of expression and right to be heard to each and every citizen. Our ZNBC must indeed feel bad that it has to take foreign media houses to provide a forum for an opposition leader to discuss and share his vision. HH you can continue to pay Al Jezeera to broadcast you, but you need to articulate the real issues not just some vague general statements. Even Kaponyas know that Zambia is potentially very rich. Every politician in opposition says the current Govt is mismanaging so what is so special about these statements. Even Sata (MHSRIP) accused his predecessors that they were not doing enough and that he could do better- what better did he do other than just finishing the little his predecessors had accumulated and even entered into unbridled borrowing. HH unless you really show that you can talk about things that are not as basic as these you will probably repeat your history i.e second or third after 11/8.
The thing is, whether he wins or loses the next election, he can still look after his family, feed and educate his children, pay for medical services, no problems with water and electricity (carbon) in his house. Most of us can’t. Why hate the guy? He is able to do that with his life earnings. The current leaders are doing it with our taxes and don’t even care about the ordinary person.
