A Day in the Life of Lusaka, Zambia

    • I don’t see the difference from New York city, just got out of metro-train, so stinking in tunnels there, people just pee and spit, more disgusting than Garden compound in Lusaka.
Without PF thugs, the I choose Lusaka.

    • This place is very disorganized. People look very miserable and I cant blame them at all. Why all this street vending? This place is really terrible and its a sad story indeed. I feel for my people. There is evident sign of hunger and real suffering. Its like people simply survive!!

  1. Until you live in another country you not know tha level of misery in zambia.me I know in zed there is suffering mainly due to govt failure.

  2. Filth, garbage everywhere, very depressing. It’s a reflection of a very careless and cruel leadership. 50+ years and people still live in the midst of rubbish like that!

    • Cleanliness is a learned behavior, but if the government of Zambia would take steps to change what Zamban society considers acceptable and what is not, the public would learn pretty quickly.

  3. It may not be as glamarous as other cities but there are always happy people good weather and good food. It is home and we love it.

    • thats right, we love it no matter what and we the zambians will fix it ourselves if at all there is anything wrong with it..

  4. Well above the din of noisy cars and crowds it’s clear that industry is going on. People selling, kids going to school, parents going about their day, employees doing their jobs. ABOVE all that is the lovely sunshine, everyone in Short sleeves. Clearly not all of Lusaka is like this there are nice residential areas.

Any economist viewing this will be more interested in noting the signs of industry going on more than superficial and minor unpleasant scenes of some dirt being shovelled. It’s clear that economic activities are prevalent. I sure do miss home!

    • Also most of that rubbish is just Zambian people not deposing their rubbish properly. It did not come from no where! If communities gathered to take action in picking that stuff it would be a better place for kids. Jean Kapata organised something like that during last elect in a constituent. No reason not to.

  5. Well this is the reality.I hope those in the diaspora and PF supporters can see the high levels of poverty and desperation in Zambia. What you saw is just in Lusaka.Imagine the state of Kabwe,Mongu,Livingstone, Solwezi, Ndola,Nakonde,Isoka,Mansa and Mbala.
It’s sad that people with no brains and heart for the country feel that continuing with the PF will improve things. The economy is deteriorating at an alarming rate with no improvement in sight. The country needs a drastic change this August. You can’t miss out on this opportunity.Accepting that the country is doing okay is criminal.

    • You are just ridiculous. That was a very encouraging view of lusaka. I have been in market arrears in UK that gave that amount of rubbish on trading day. It’s Zambians educating themselves not to throw rubbish about like that. The Traders are self employed until gov’t create more jobs.

      NO TO UPND.

  6. The camera guy is not serious, obviously a none Zambian or one of those self-hating *****s. Why spend the whole day to show nasty images of the place, why not show the good places which are plenty. I was in Zambia last year and it was great, it my home and I will always be Zed bias. Yes, ma issue alipo pa Zed buti ni patu. I agree with most comments, the leadership has failed the test, they have been found wanting! Love Zambia from ku ma shanti, ku ma yadi olo ku munzi.

  7. JAYWICK, the badlands of UK. Go to this page and view poverty similar to yours in the UK, complete with a Rubbish in the Street.

ZAMBIANS wake up, everything does not revolve around Lusaka. At least you have potential to CREATE wealth if you’d only stop begging Westerners!

  8. Bane, let’s admit it. Our country is very dirty and we do not need Western money to clean it. The way you keep your house clean is the way you should keep all your surroundings clean. Added to the Christian nation always being promoted, Zambia should be heaven on earth.

  9. Sometimes I have lots of questions and doubts about people who claim to have travelled and they say that they have seen other countries and Zambia is the dirtiest place in the world. I don’t think these people have seen anything. Have they visited some places in India? Have they visited garbage city in Egypt or the slums of Bangkok Thailand, Malaysia. Please stop cheating people. Yes some places are dirty in Zambia but those that claim to have travelled and seen some places I think when they travel they don’t move around. While I admit that there are places that are dirty in Zambia, there places that are worse than Zambia even in some of the big cities in the world.

    • @Adage. I have had the blessing to visit all the places you have mentioned. To say the least, I was shocked. Yes, Zambia is not as shockingly appalling as they are but that’s nothing to be proud of. We can and should do better.

  10. I get amazed at PF cadres defending the rubbish or garbage in Lusaka or Zambia. India or Malaysia is not Zambia. Why should Zambians now live with rubbish? Where is Chagwa’s keep Zambia clean and the once a month Saturday cleanning? Look at the following to show you dirty Zambia is

  11. don’t just blame govnt..it all begins from individuals who should be disciplined and not to steal state resources for personal gains… councilors are dull and corrupt and they have no idea about how to fight for the much needed amenities!!!!
