President Edgar Lungu has launched the construction of what will be the largest dam in the history of the country’s agriculture sector at a total cost of US$ 28 million.

Mwomboshi dam in Chisamba district will be constructed by Anhui Foreign Economic Construction Company Limited of China within a period of 30 months.

Speaking during the launch of the project and laying of the foundation stone today, President Lungu says Mwomboshi dam will have the capacity to store 65 million cubic metres of water with a dam wall of 1,700 metres long and 23 metres high.

He said that at its full capacity, the dam will cover a distance of about 10 kilometres.

President Lungu stated that the dam investment is good for the people of Mwomboshi as it is intended to increase agriculture production.

The Head of State added that the people of Mwomboshi will benefit immensely from the project as they will not only be able to irrigate their various crops and pasture throughout the year, but will also have access to water for their livestock and fisheries, as well as for recreation purposes.

President Lungu has directed the Ministers of Agriculture and Livestock to devise strategies of enhancing food production in the country.

The Head of State said the construction of the dam shows government’s resolve to put agriculture at the centre of the economy.

And speaking at the same function, World Bank country Manager Ina Ruthenberg says the project will be financed through a $115 million World Bank credit with very soft conditions under the irrigation development and support project over a seven year period. Ms Ruthernburg said the changing weather patterns has affected about 60 percent of Zambian rural farmers who depend on rain fed agriculture.

And speaking earlier, Agriculture Minister Given Lubinda said two more irrigation schemes are expected to be commissioned this year. Mr Lubinda said that Six thousand hectares of land will be on irrigation under the Mwomboshi Irrigation Scheme.

  1. What happened to the monies that already have been borrowed for irrigation schemes? One this, something productive for a change, well done.

    • We are poorly represented as a country by this Lungu president. We should take pride as Zambians in electing our leaders.

      This has to change

      Aleisa HH

    • No credit to ECL, but to cooperating partners. If you want ECL to have credit, this should have been in the budget.

    • The first picture really tell a story, first picture, you can tell that chagwa has no passion for farming, his passion is just look at how his face droppy face glows when he sees Jerry chilanga stringing that guitar. Did you see how GBM raised that hoe with passion when farmers in kalulushi handed it to him, did you see how HH was helping that old lady to shell that maize.

    • @ Ndobo, I didn’t think about cruet, but now I feel sad that they gave goats to wrong party. PF like to slaughter things.

    • Actually PF does not need to form an alliance with another Party to win on 11/08..EL will scope more than 60%

    • Any form of development is welcome. Im not sure about the motive with this development. I suppose its designed to win votes, but who cares. The person launching this construction might not even live to eat of its fruit. Anyway, good luck to all the candidates. We are just asking for a fair play so that the right candidate may win.

    • What is that nonsense about how good GBM raised the hoe and HH shelled the maize? That’s why we say UPND cadres worship HH and now they are starting to hero worship the Great Bag of Maize (GBM) the wife barterer! Atase, I’m totally voting for this small, humble and hard-working Chagwa, because I have no intention of worshipping a mere mortal!

    • What happened to all that borrowed money they told us was for irrigation, because I can see we have borrowed somemore.

    • No credit to ECL, but to cooperating partners. If you want ECL to have credit, this should have been in the budget.

    • Yes the most expensive roads/km in the world. Of course over inflated by PF officials who pocket the difference. Total cost have been exceeded by almost a quarter by PF.

    • @ JAY JAY giving a zambian contract will result in the project taking 10yrs and firstly they will buy a jeep a range rover take their girl friends for shopping in south africa thereafter they will start the construction when they have spent half the money

  2. No shame at all whatsoever every project is financied via loans and credit even a dam surely everything going to foreign main contractors…you can even raise 25% of project costs. Its no wonder he is the only one wearing gum boots.

    • Jay jay, this time I disagree with you. President Lungu is doing great with this one. Agriculture is a self sufficient industry when the correct investments are put in place. Now go and comment on the Barclays post, Wanzelu has lost his Nzelu there.

    • Surely do you need a foreign contractor to come all the way from China why?? to build concrete dam wall or retaining wall 1,700m long by 23m high for a reservoir??? This is basic civil engineering even a year two student can calculate the forces on such a wall with ease…if this govt truly understands how important agriculture is they wouldn’t have had reduced the budget allocation for this year and they would have diverted a some of that Euro-bond to such projects instead of sinking it in the black hole called RDA and throwing it to “stabilize” the kwacha. This gov’t is not prudent to manage these loans and should cease to accumulate more of them even if they have very soft conditions.

    • Do you even know what the word sustainable means?? if you did …you wouldnt use it in the same sentence with word loan in it.

    • Jay Jay, you are really a self righteous sod! All big development projects are done through loans and this is a soft loan. Go study some 1st year economics at any university of your choice!

  3. T0ngas are natural sadists, they don’t to see other succeed. That is part of their DNA. When you are surrounded by them, you should consider yourself to be in danger even if they show you their fake teeth.
Most people from other tribes who have had this experience I bring to you will definately agree with what I talking about.

It itches them so badly to see other tribes making progress in what they do. when people say Zambians want to see their frnds fail or they stab each others back; I totally disagree with this saying. Let us see who is behind the devilish acts and make a correct conclusion. Have you seen a tonga betraying or hit the fellow tonga like most tribes do?

    • Every major theif or plunderer in Zambia has been from the north. It like stealing is in their DNA. If your company has bembas in senior positions, make sure you carry out an audit every month. As long as they see it is a bemba plundering GRZ resources, they are happy, even if their children’s future us affected. They actually cheer on the plunderes and simply look for somewhere to plunder them selves.

    • T0ngas are natural sadists, they don’t want to see others succeed or make various achievements. That is part of their DNA. When you are surrounded by them, you should consider yourself to be in danger even if they show you their fake teeth. They have natural hatred.

    • To a bemba stealing or abusing company or government resources is being clever. then you see the other ones being envious of the stealing

    • Marley

Your tribalism is exposed and known. You will never change facts, even if you borrow a million lies to cover your fices!!!!!!!!

    • Marley,

Flies are all over following your smelling fices. It was a rumor recently and now it is a known truth. Segregation, hatred and jelousy is in your blood and you cannot deny this fact because deep down your heart, you know it. work places and in some houses know what I am bringing out!!!!!!

    • Watchdog
And your tribalism above does not show? The truth does indeed hurt. As the saying goes don’t throw stones if you live in glass houses.

  6. @Wizad:i 100% agree with!!FOR THESE TONGAS NOTHING MAKES SENSE IN ZAMBIA IF NOT DONE BY THEIR HH!!THE ONLY ” MR RIGHT” IN THE EYES OF THESE PEOPLE IS THEIR ka god HH!!WHATEVER PRESIDENT EDGAR LUNGU DOES IS NONSENSE,WHILE THEY GREATLY APPRECIATE WHATEVER HH SAYS OR DOES!!!hey i have never seen such sadists world over like these guys from south Zambia!!THEY FRIEND WHOEVER SPEAKS THEIR LANGUAGE AND HATE NONE TONGA WHO CANNOT SUPPORT THEIR HH!! God please help Zambia bcoz if some people make a mistake of voting hh into state house, this country will be devided badly!!!KEEP ON WORKING HARD PRESIDENT EDGAR LUNGU!!IN LIFE ITS GOOD TO APPRECIATE A PERSON DOING NICE THINGS!!ECL HAS REALLY TRIED HIS BEST!!

    • That’s why every able Zambian of other Tribe and party MUST come out yo vote so that we get a resounding victory for President Lungu.

    • That’s why every able Zambian of other Tribe and party MUST come out to vote so that we get a resounding victory for President Lungu.

    • It is the bembas who have destroyed Zambia with their stealing. It seems all they know is stealing and prostitution. I went to school in S province which was a peaceful place, but as soon as bemba fishermen came crime shootup 100%. Even in our streets it is the bembas committing most crimes. If God only demarcated them into Congo with their usless mines, Zambia would be a peaceful place. Now corruption and plunder is the whole government because of them. Pleas god change these people’s stealing.

    • Marley,

Flies are all over following your smelling fices. It was a rumor recently and now it is a known truth. Segregation, hatred and jelousy is in your blood and you cannot deny this fact because deep down your heart, you know it. work places and in some houses know what I am bringing out!!!!!!

    • @Marley it’s really a pity that you lower yourself with such thinking and utterances. In your words there is no evidence of educated thought, ability to analyse the current gov’t and present a balanced opinion of legitimate Zambian citizens.

People like you come to social media forums to vent hatred and anger inappropriately. Name calling and making wild unsubstantiated claims against a democratically elected gov’t and it’s officials is proof of your backward character. Jealousy and spite expressed as a campaign against prostitutes ( whom you have indulged in presumably to reach your decision) and so called thieves; is just poor, primitive and you need to get a proper job instead of occupying your time in empty discussions.

    • And you patriot abroad have been exposed for supporting voting based on tribe, what is that you are saying every able bodied person from other tribes should vote for who? In support of that tribalist calling himself watchdog above. You try to hide your dirty tribalism under bankrupt contribution on this site. You have been exposed.

    • @Marley, I am non partisan and have not been raised in Zambia enough to be tribal. My concern is for stable gov’t which I truly believe can not be delivered by UPND. I support PF because they have experience and are not planning a radical destruction of Zambia based on supporting one province and tribe. They are Patriotic.

I am encouraging Zambians to vote emphatically against UPND because they are causing too much disruption in Zambia and use strategy that antagonises Zambia rather than show patriotic tendencies. I am following the thread by @ Eddy which makes sense. You can’t even accept the good PF has done.

  7. President Lungu is a very good President. While opposition shout and jump about waving Red Flags to the citizens, he quietly goes about HHS duty. It’s his measured and gentle manner that we love.

God bless our President and Country!

    • @Spaka all gov’ts borrow for development. It’s an exhibition of sheer ignorance in the face of proven improvements in infrastructure and prevalence of problem solving projects by PF. Frankly you and your ilk don’t know where to look, it’s just wildly flailing your arms and mouth about. It’s pitiful that you are unable to critically analyse the positive and negative in PF’s term other than by using nuisance statements every adult recognises as propaganda.

    • @patriot abroad
I appreciate that we need to borrow for infrastructure, but PF seem to be borrowing for every single work, even I am sure for them to drive to parliament they have borrowed.
Recently they borrowed for women skills enhancement, come on, if you can borrow it does not mean you have to borrow for every single thing you do. Give us a break

    • Why do bembas cry too much when they are segregated? But when they go tribal they even go to the rooftops to be heard by everyone? Stupid thieves.

  8. We can have that dam but the question is are we changing the rainfall pattern? For how long are we going to ignore rainbelt areas like North western, luapula and Northern? Imagine if that HEP station in itezitezi was constructed in north western or luapula will we have experienced the shortage of power by now? face the facts

  9. Nemwe ba UPND do you have to oppose everything? Look at what lungu is doing and what you did during privatisation. Who do you think is better between you two? Show us where you kept privatization money and we shall vote you

  10. T0ngas are natural sadists, they don’t want to see others succeed or make various achievements. That is part of their DNA. When you are surrounded by them, you should consider yourself to be in danger even if they show you their fake teeth. They have natural hatred.

    • Look at this dirty tribalist thieve, You are just natural born theives. He is accusing others of being tribalists while he smells of tribalism himself.

  11. Marley,

As you call yourself, you will not hide your smelling fices in public. It is indeed impossible to do!!!!!!!!

  12. How about setting a $400m Kuomboka Dam in Barotseland to save the Lozis from annual floods?

Or a $2bn dam in Lusaka to save Zambian voters from the flood of PF misrule and incompetence?

  13. @Marley, I am with you on this one. There is a tribe in Zambia (Name withheld) that has been bitter since independence. Some how it thinks it is special and condemns everything done by others yet, curiously condones what its people does as progressive. It hates other Zambian tribes and loves only itself. This tribes thrives on bukachema just like others thrive on ubulime. But tell them that, you are called all sorts. This tribes does see anything good in Zambia because it is blinded by bitterness. They are so bitter they think they can intimidate people into voting for them through violence. But what this tribe does realise since 1964 is that it is nothing when other tribes of Zambia unite, just like they will unite on August 11th. Viva Zambia down the tribe with a small t.

  14. Strange there are no Chinese in any of the pictures even though it is being built by Chinese (and the stage is written in Chinese)

  15. Wait and see more dams are coming most expect southern province next for in northern part of Zambia will have abundant rains regardless of low rainfall turnout at list crops grow. We are closer to Congo rain forest at list even frost does reach us in Bemba we say umume. We ‘ll even trap water from Luapula river to feed Kafue river from Copperbelt to Zambezi river authorities onto Kariba dam. Wait and see lekeni tubombele abana nabeshikulu epompelele…!

  16. Bye the way Luapula means pass through. Geographically it comes from streams that feed Congo river it diverts into northern province of zambia to form a vast flood plain known as Bangweulu flood plains.Meaning the flood plain that reaches the sky, then on Luapula continues to reach chembe border which is roughly less than 80 km from Kafue river on the Copperbelt, so you see it’s possible though the river goes on to pass through Lake Mwelu ( the English failed to pronounce they named it Mweru ) from Mwelu it goes back to Congo river and end up into the ocean. So you see how we late water going to waste!

  17. But cowtherners are really bitter, tribal and sadists. Imagine what wud happen to non cowtherners i.e bembas and easterners if the freemanson were to win in august (God forbid)?? These dull bembas and easternes who are busy supporting hh blindly will be in sh.it. Plz pipo lets not allow these bitter *****s come closer to plot 1. Tonges are too tribal & bitter. Non tonges will really suffer if hh won. Vote Edgar. PF chabe.

    • You are thieves who have destroyed Zambia. Other tribes have had enough of your stealing and want to develop Zambia. All tribes who love Zambia can see how you are stealing as we write even peace loving honest hard working bembas and Easterners have had enough of this PF ensemble of thieves.

  18. WAY TO GO AND A SIMILAR DAM SHOULD BE CONSTRUCTED IN LUAPULA OR NORTHERN PROVINCE TO CATER FOR LUAPULA PROVINCE ITSELF, NORTHERN AND MUCHINGA PROVINCES. IN THIS CASE THE DAM OR DAMS SHOULD BE BIGGER THAN MWOMBOSHI IN ORDER TO COLLECT MUCH MORE MILLION LITRES AS THESE AREAS RECEIVE HIGH RAINFALLS

  19. Hey pipo, stop this tribal talks. Its one Zambia one nation kwata.God loves us all.Lets grow and move on to another level of thinking. For,big wigs(politicians, dont devide us pliz) or alse tizaleta UNIP with our big man KK back into power for the sake of peace.

  20. Us in the north are blessed thats why we recieve sufficient rainfall every year unlike our bitter friends who always cry for rains because of their bitterness. They cant see any good in what someone who is not their tribe does, even if PF and ECL develops SP like New york they will still not appreciate! What kind of pipo are these?

    • Even honest hard working northerners and Easterners have had enough of your missmangment and looting and only care about developing Zambia. Can you explain the 21% inflation and massive job losses and the cholera ravaging Zambia

  21. So correct Marley, we are poor because of northeners and easterners. They have bewitched us with this myth like only they can rule and we fall for it, keep voting for and what do they do. Stealing of course. Never take responsibility and always seeking to call other tribes names, They are weak bullies trying to make themselves all that important like they are they only tribe God created. See them shake before a whiteman. Look at their provinces foreigners come snatch their wealth right in their faces and abuse them. Tribe is nothing but a label it does not make one superior or rich. Patriot and company stop that nonsense we know you probably wiping butt in diaspora and shake like a fool when a whiteman calls you. You come here and pretend you superior, trying to look down on other tribes…

  22. Despite the pomp that surrounds the construction of the dam. The truth is that this dam will only benefit 7 white commercial farmers. Hundreds of villagers will be displaced. No compesation has been discussed. The only black commercial farmer in the area will have half his farm immersed in water. The other white commercial farmers did not offer there land to be used for the dam. The corrupt officials from ministry of agric and ministry of lands acknowledged this big oversight in that only the black commercial farmers land is will be used in the construction of this dam and promised to re survey the area. But nothing has been done. The next thing we hear is the president has launched the dam. The president is ill advised of what truly the people of momboshi need. They need schools clinics…
